The Soul Occs - Swing Through

People have been asking over and over again when the album will be coming... Due to personal reasons I didn't have any time within the last year to mix the album or even get it mixed, but now that the exams are over I will work on it. It's the first time in 1 1/2 years that I actually have some free time.
I'm giving away the summer hit from the album called "Swing Through". It has a happy, soulful BBQ vibe, and I'm sure y'all will dig it.

I'm sorry for not posting that much within the last months. I will also care about that in the next weeks. I'm working on some topics that go more deeply into the music and culture, and also some off-topic posts. We need to get some more discussions going on here! I hope everyone has been well! You know I love y'all!

DJ SoulClap & Wylbunch feat Punchline - Change

Some of y'all might remember my dude Wyldbunch from the artist Spotlight on here and the track that we did, that Trav had is his Top 20.
We decided to work on a full lenght album together, because I always wanted to make a straight New York Hip Hop album (like everybody from Germany, lol).
This joint takes you back to '94, with hard drums and a golden era type melody. It's the first one off the upcoming album and it features Punchline (of eMC).
Z-Share link
Please check it, I know what the people who check this page like, and this is one of the joint. please leave some feedback, to let us know if we're heading in the right direction!
Much Love!

This & That

I got some news for you. First I wanna give you some news about the next Superstar Quamallah album. I just got it from his blog:
"peace everybody,
for the past year now i've been working on and collecting songs toward an album titled "invisible man". i've never considered rhymin over other people's tracks until recently when i hooked up with some cool cats and great producers who feel the same about the music as i do.
the album is titled after the classic novel, "invisible man" by ralph ellison. the book is a must read and really captures the complex space black men inherit, living in a society that fears them and fantacizes about them at the same time, while within both rhelms we are "invisible" in many regards. i can recall countless times standing in line at the store and a non-black person has come and casually stepped in front of me. their reply has always been a simple "excuse me" or "oh i didn't know you were in line". funny, especially with my 6 foot 4, 200 plus pound frame standing with shit in my hands is pretty hard not to notice.
the album symbolizes this theme through my personal views about black culture in the united states and specifically hiphop music. what i know to be the foundations of hiphop music is usually overlooked or dismissed as what is "popular" often times contradicts what the music "used" to symbolize. artists sticking to the traditional sounds, formulas, and messages are often times "invisible".
my favorite time period for hiphop music was definitely between 1983 and 1994 with 1988 and 1993 being two years that standout as extremely impressive years musically and culturally. the fashion, slang, movies, t.v. shows, and vibe during those years was incredible. while totally submerged in the feelings and music of that entire time period, i went to work on "invisible man" and i am excited for people to hear the result! it is an album that i would want to hear from some of my favorite artists of the past and present today. this is not a RETRO trip for me; this is me at my best lyrically and spiritually using the accessories of the 80's and 90's to fuel me. i am a '88 soul as the song states!
thank you to all the producers who have contributed to this project: clever jeff, izznyce, dj soulclap, dj diaze, pawel g and myself. all underground cats still hungry and passionate about hiphop music. plus they gave me that classic 80's/90's sound i love to listen to!!!
the album should drop anytime between now and next summer '09. stay tuned and get ready!
one love,
superstar quamallah"
From what I've heard so far it will be bangin, perfect for what the readers of this blog like. It has a huge golden age feel to it.
Next up: I did a little EP with one of my best friends Esperado. (http://www.myspace.com/esperadomc)
"Here it is, the collection of tracks that Esperado and DJ SoulClap recorded during the last months with some top notch guests. The Snapshot EP got its name from the process of recording. We met in Esperado's studio, picked a beat, picked a beer and started writing. Afterwards we directly recorded what we've just written. Even Mr. SoulClap discovered his love for rhyming after a few beers and after being on his first ever track (Nachts im Club, Track 5) So the tracks on the EP are the first joints he ever recorded. The Instrumentals come from eMC, Jazzy Jeff, Keith Murray, Method Man & Redman und Masta Ace.
The guests on this entertaining piece of music are Tony Tigerstyle, Souleez, Albino, Funky Matt, MadCap and of course Martys, who all share the same love fro the music and culture. That's the reason why we ended up in the studio together."
Tracklist:
1. The Jump Off feat. Tony Tigerstyle, Souleez & Funky Matt
2. Was ist schön? feat. Albino & MadCap
3. Hallo!
4. Want Sum Git Some feat. Martys
5. Nachts im Club feat. Martys
6. Damals
Most if it is in German, some in English, but I think you will enjoy it anyway, if not you can delete it afterwards.
Download it here for free!

DJ SoulClap, This Is Hip Hop and WYDU present: Let’s Flow - The Contest

Hey people!
I just started working on my first producer album, which will feature some of your favourite underground heroes, (I won’t tell you no names yet, it’s top secret) and maybe YOU!
There are so many remix contests these days, that I thought I will do it backwards! I’ve never seen somebody doing something like this before and I’m really excited about it!
So this is the deal:
I made a beat and uploaded it on zshare! Now I want y’all to write three 16 bar verses, record em to this beat and send the track to djsoulclap@gmail.com
The hook got cuts in it, but they are pretty much in the background, so you can do whatever you want with it.
The contest will run till August 15th. All entries need to be submitted till that date. There will be 5 judges, Travis from WYDU, Kevin from This is Hip Hop, 2 of my close friends and me, plus there will be a public voting.
You can listen to and download the beat here:
ZShare or
Myspace
The winner of the contest will get:
- A feature on 2 of the most popular Hip Hop blogs on the net (kevinnottingham.com and wydublog.com)
- A feature on my myspace site,
- The Track will be featured on my Producer album besides the tracks of some popular underground artists,
- and of course a free copy of the album when it’s out!
The winner will be announced on August 31st, after the public voting. He/She needs to make sure that he/she can send me the wav files of his recording.
Important Notes:
- You can upload the track on your myspace page…
- You are not allowed to use the beat for your album projects, it’s protected and you will have to face the consequences
- You CAN use it on your mixtapes if you give me credit…
- The Track needs to be in English
So if you are a dope MC or you know somebody who got skills, tell him and Let’s Flow!!!
Visit http://kevinnottingham.com/myblog/ too
Much Love,

My first half of '08
Hey my blogging friends! It's been a while since I wrote something, but you know I've been mad busy. The Soul Occs album is recorded, just needs to be mixed and then it will be out on cd and your favortie donwload sites (not zshare ;)
You can listen to a little album snippet here:
http://www.zshare.net/audio/1409744882dee020/
I was a little slow with buying something this year, so I didn't even listen to the Kidz in the hall album and some other stuff, but there was good ish coming out this year! I'm doing this kinda like a freestyle so I hope I don't forget about anything.
So let's start!
I'ma start with Lupe, which came out last december (music wise the dec. counts as the next year to me) I was mad surprised, I liked the first album but this one was way better. The vibe of the album is just dope. It's not that sample based this time but it still sounds good. He tells dope stories and got some catchy hooks. "Hip Hop saved my life" is my joint, the girl on the hook kills it! There are no tracks that I don't really like, so this has been one of my favs so far.
Best Tracks: Hip Hop saved my life, Gotta Eat, The Coolest, Gold Watch
You already know how I feel about the eMC album if you read my review, this will be my favorite album of 08 wiht no doubts. It has everything a classic needs, dope tracks front to back connect through some cool skits, a good concept, hot beats and crazy lyrics. Ace, Punch, Words and Strick harmonize very well and kill every beat. This just makes me say, I want eMC part 2 and it will come... you can count on that.
Best tracks: Leak it out, Feel it, Winds of change, We alright, you let me grow, Who we be, Traffic, The Grudge
Daily Conversations is a good album! Torae got some hot producers on his album, Premo, 9th Wonder, Khrysis, Eric G (upcoming!) Marco Polo and a few more, good features (Skyzoo, Tash, Chandon, Kel Spencer...) and dope lyrics by himself. You can listen through the whole thing with out skipping. The only negative thing is, that the tracks aren't mixed that well, the quality could have been better. My very favorite joint is "Switch" where he imitates other MC's and switches his flow every 4 bars. There will be a video coming up for that one pretty soon!
Best Tracks: Switch, Click, The Journe pt.1, Da Nigguz is coming
Pete Rock and Premo are my favorite producers of all time and a huge inspiration. I pretty much like everything Pete does with just little exceptions. NY's finest is no exception, it has a bunch of hot joints and some good ones. Good features like Little Brother, Styles P, Torae, Lord of the Underground, Redman or Papoose and beats with huge basslines just like we love it. Is it just me or would it be dope if Redman and Pete Rock did an album together??? I totally love that joint on this album, why does Redman alway need to pick wacker beats for his album? All in all this is definitely a top 5 album this year!
Best Tracks: 914, Best Believe, Bring y'all back, The best kept secret
This is the biggest surprise of 08 to me. I really think this is his best album since Doggystyle. I detected like 3 tracks I didn't like on Ego Trippin, but that's not much for 21 tracks, it leaves you with 18 dope joints! The Sound of the album is just so dope! I listened to it a lot and didn't get tired of it, that's unusual for a Snoop album. At least to me. I think that is, because the beats are very versatile but homogeneous at the same time, they all follow one vibe. There are too many good joints to point some out, he got party joints and a lot of relaxed type of tracks. I LOVE it!
Best Tracks: Press Play, SD is out, Sets up, Deez Hollywood nights, One chance, Neva Have to, Cool
Honorable mentions: The Roots - Rising Down, Guilty Simpson - Ode to the Ghetto, Akrobatik - Absolute Value, Buckshot & 9th Wonder - Tha Formula
In the end I got some fresh news for y'all. I just started working on my first Producer album. I'm really in my first steps so I can't tell too much, but it will feature some of your favorite underground MC'S and singers. It will be something special cause I wanna do something that nobody ever did before, but I don't wanna tell it yet. I'm still trying to get the features together but some are already onfirmed, you will hear Donny Goines, Has-Lo, Xola, Wyldbunch, Tony Tigerstyle, Mr Complex and many more....
I'll keep you updated!
Much Love to y'all!

Dedicated to The B's feat. Punch

Whattup people.
Today I'm coming with a special gift!
We (The Soul Occs) finsihed recording our album yesterday! I know everybody is saying that about his alb um, but it really is something special. You might have heard some of my stuff, but that was nothing compared to, what will be on the album. I just can't say more right now.
A song that won't be on the album in that way, is "Dedicated to the B's" featuring the one and only Punchline.
We give it away as a free download, this will be the only way you can get it!
I know everybody got some people in his life, that are always complaining or that always got a bad attitude and act like a B! This is a song for all of you. If you're mad at someone, just listen to it, sing along, rap along or just listen to it because it's good music!
I hope y'all enjoy it!

New Artist Spotlight: The Soul Occs Baby!!

You know what it's all about, I gotta look out for my homies. In all honesty though, that ain't what this New Artist Spotlight is all about. True, I've had contact with SoulClap for over four years now, but I'm not doing this as any kind of "favor". I'm doing this because with his MCing partner, Tony Tigerstyle, the form the Soul Occs and they are putting out some incredible music. SoulClap and I met while frequenting the Mastaace boards back in late 2003/early 2004. We both had a common tastes in hip hop music and while he was a younger cat, he was already up on his history and that he didn't know, he was eager to learn. It wouldn't be long after that Clap would take up making beats. I won't say the Clapster was horrible at first, far from it, but truth is that Clap has improved in LEAPS and BOUNDS. You can feel the love in the music he makes. Truth is, I'm often somewhat hard on Clap. He asks for my opinion on a beat and I give him an honest answer. If I'm not feeling, I'll straight up tell him, I'm not feeling it. Hopefully he respects the honesty, because I don't think it does him any good by hyping everything up. If I am feeling it, I'll pump it up as well. I kind of take him for granted, because to me, he is "SoulClap", fellow WYDU contributor and mastaace.com confidant.
Clap would get his hustle on and a year or so later after he started making beats. He would send me a track with this cat from L.A. rhyming on one of his beats. It struck me as, "dayum, this dude is pretty nice", soon, the Soul Occupants would be born. It's been great watching Clap and Tony progress and morph into a group that has the talent to really make some noise. Currently, the two are holed up in Germany, working on an album. I truly hope the take full advantage of this, because this is the type shit dreams are made of. Fucking around and making music. And hopefully, it's just the beginning.
I got a chance to talk to Tony and SoulClap and here is what went down
Soul Occupants
WYDU: What’s good my people, would you mind some introductions for those the might not know who you are?
Tony: What’s hood y’all? I’m ya kid with 9 lives, Tony Tigerstyle.
Clap: I’m the Clapster. Most of y’all already know me, so I will keep it short… Making Beats for 3 ½ years now…
W: Alright, so you are pulling the “Foreign Exchange” trick, with SoulClap being from Germany and Tony being from LA, how did the two of you hook up?
Clap: In the end of ’05 Asphate Woodhavet hit me up, and asked if I wanna make some beats for the label Madeline Soul LLC. It’s DJ Episodes label, and HE told me to hit up Tony. It started through myspace, then we started chatting on Yahoo messenger, got to know each other. I sent him beats, he took his picks, and the rest is history… The first track we did was My ChildHOOD, everybody loved that joint, so we decided to start working on an album. We came up with the name “Soul Occupants” pretty quick, cause that’s who we are and we represent.(the sole owners of our position) Since we have great chemistry we became really close friends with time.
W: A lot of the WYDU fans know about SoulClap and his past, but Tony might be a bit more of mystery if they haven’t read the interview that he did early on WYDU, can you give some info on your background?
Tony: No problem, I’m originally from the south-side of Chicago, Illinois. I was raised in a place called the Quad Cities (Davenport, Iowa/ Rock Island, Il.) It’s the home of football legend Roger Craig. And, I’ve resided for the past 18 years in Long Beach, Ca. I was a finalist in the same competition that launched Joel Ortiz (EA Sports Livestyle Rap Battle 2004), but didn’t get the decision before the final round to meet Ortiz. I’m mostly known just as a battle emcee, but I’m working hard to change that. I’ve performed and written with numerous top musicians who’ve helped me develop myself over that time, and I’m just trying to not have my contribution to hip-hop as an emcee go unnoticed. Live shows and recording is my sh%t! You know that guy who can rip anytime anywhere, but just hasn’t got that chance or proper forum to show it off….well, nice to meet you, lol. I was blessed, however, to do a few things in LA, but it’s hard to stand out. The area is very saturated and cliquish; if that’s the right term for it. But, I still love and rep Cali too.
W: So you two are vibing together for the next three months in Germany, right? How is that going down and how did that come about?
Tony: It’s going like I expected, great! We’re taking our time to fill in the pot holes we see missing, and give the fans like us, what they really want. Good beats and rhymes…classics. We met through a mutual friend, DJ Episode of Madeline Soul Music (Des Moines, IA). And we just were on the same level in lots of ways. We both wanted to give hip-hop a shot in the arm. Speaking for myself, I love the fact that it’s still evolving and growing, but so does fungus, lol. To me, certain aspects need to be preserved. The main goal for me is to push the envelope, and re-establish the level of quality writing, performing, and emceeing in general. The clothes, cars, and who you’re down with is played. For real listeners, and fans…..you just gotta bring it.
Clap: We just needed to get together. Tony didn’t have the chance to record whenever he wanted and needed some change, so we got him over here. Now we can work on everything more effectively. We can pick the cuts together, he can directly tell me how he wants the beats to be, he can spit the rhymes for me before we record it, we just contribute to the others work, which wasn’t possible in that way before. Everything is a lot easier now. When the track is written we can directly go over to my boy Esperado’s (www.myspace.com/esperadomc) and record it. Plus I purchased a new computer specifically for music only. I can copy the whole session from Esperado, and mix it at home. Perfect!
W: Tony what is it like being in Germany for all of this? That would have to be a great big culture shock. What did it take to take three months to do this?
Tony: Honestly, it is very different, but I’m so used to change it’s not that big of a shock. I do like the energy for the authentic approach we have. I’ve received a warm welcome from everyone I’ve encountered so far. I just want to do the fans justice, and let ‘em know there’s much, much, more out here for ‘em. And, to knock down the wall for the emcee who is reading this right now, and knows he or she has that hotness. WE (undergrounders) make the game go ‘round…believe that. As far as what did it take? God blessing us, and I guess just the love of my friends, family behind me, and the haters to motivate me. Gotta have them haters, hahahaha.
Clap: OK, this is a hint to one of our album joints called “The hate that made me”. Let’s just say the player hater’s ball on Dave Chappelle was just the beginning, lol. I think the main difference is that everything is much more expensive over here. You ( in the U.S.) complain about the gas prices? We have to pay twice as much…
W: How important do you think it is to be able to actually sit down and discuss things to the outcome of the album?
Tony: I think conceptualizing is mandatory for making classic art period. You gotta have vision, and be in a comfortable place, wherever that is for you. And, if you have a partner, they and you have to be on a similar page. Respect for each others contribution and creative process is also very valuable. Without that, it’s kaos.
W: What do you two hope to achieve with this album? Do you have big label dreams or just hoping get the Soul Occ’s name out there?
Tony: God willing?!? What I want to give is the same feeling Run gave me at the Fresh Fest back in the day. Also, the same feeling I got from all of my ‘big brothers and sisters of hip-hop’ watching them on Yo! MTV Raps and Classic RapCity growing up. Man, If I can transfer that energy to the next kid comin up…. job well done. What about you Clap?
SoulClap: Our approach is, to make good music. We are just doing us. You can’t push us in any direction, we got our own, very unique sound. If we wanna use synths, we will do that, cause if it’s hot it’s hot. We will add our own flava, we will have cuts on it or whatever. We got shit to bang your trunk, we got shit to make you think, we got shit to make you feel, we got it all, and everybody can relate to it, that’s important! We will check the label opportunities later, that’s not the most important thing right now.
W: So is there an album name yet? Do you have any particular way your are intending to release the project?
Clap: It will be a concept album called “Soul Brothers”, and updated version of the Blues Brothers theme, but I don’t wanna tell too much right now.
W: I know you’ve been keeping potential guests underwraps, but any chance of WYDU exclusives being mentioned? Hahaha
Clap: We got a track with Punch called “Dedicated to the B’s” and a track with Superstar Quamallah called “The Raw”. Those are the names that are already definite. I really don’t wanna say too much, but I got a mail from my hero today and he might end up on it too… We also have Rosevelt from Inland Empire, CA on a track called “Paper Steady” and might have 2 or 3 more guests, but I really can’t say anything else right now.
W: What is in the immediate future for the Soul Occs, besides just working on the album? Any shows planned for while Tony is there?
Clap: We got a show with EMC, Torae and Marco Polo on May 26th and will be performing as the main act in a freestyle battle on May 31st, I will be one of the judges too. We are working on doing a birthday Bash with The Smile Rays too. They will be in Germany for three months too, Daisey’s b-day is June 9th, mine is June 10th, so I came up with the idea of doing a show together around that time, it may go down in Berlin. Besides that I’m trying to get us some more shows. Holla, lol!
W: Also gotta ask if Clap is going to be making it across the pond? It’s his turn next to get his butt over hear so we can show him how to do it American style….haha
Clap: It’s just a matter of time, give me those dollars (or better euros at this time) and I’m on the next plane… It still might happen that there will be a Soul Occs Canada tour in August/September, but we don’t have a definite word on that yet…
W: Any last words to the fans out there in blog land?
Tony: Hey, I just want to say thank you for listening, pull ya shoes up, and getcha neck ready, lol! Hope you enjoy what we have in store for y’all. Keep it regular!!
W: Alright, best of luck to the two of you, looking forward to the album
Clap: Thank you, much appreciated!
Tony: No doubt, and thank for the interview. That’s what’s up! Soul Occs baby!

The Soul Occs - finally united! Diary: Days 1 and 2

Sunday, April 13th, 3.30pm, I'm waiting at the airport in Hamburg with my homie Claas, for my brother from another, that I've been knowing for over 2 years and who became a really close friend! We didn't even had to wait that long cause the flight arrived early. It was a great feeling when he came out of that terminal. Finally we were united!
He came with 2 huuuuuge bags, one was weighting 60 pounds, but he was flirting with that girl at the airport so he didn't have to pay any extra fee, haha. Plus he had a backpack, basically just for his fitted hats. So, with Tony and 2 huuge bags in my car I was much slower, but Tony was totally feeling the autobahn, cause we could go like 200mph, haha. At least that's what he said.
Back home we were lucky to get a good parking lot, Tony was enjoying my crib, but we really needed to get something to eat, so it was time for his very first Döner!
The rest of the night we spent chilling out with Claas and Matt, listening to music, making beats, rapping, cutting and drinking beer! It was dope, but we went to bed early cause we were tired as hell.
Due to that we got up early and went to the studio at 10am to knock out a track and a hook for another one. On our way back we stopped at a computer store where I ordered a new pc, just for music. So when I get it next week it will be on, I will hook up m keyboard, install all the plugins and we will reach a whole new level of creativity!
As a special treat for the WYDU listeners I uploaded a short snippet of a new track, you can't listen to it anywhere else, it's ruff, not mixed, just really raw and exclusively for you!
Back home we ate something and Tony took a "nap". I started making space in my wardrobe for his stuff, I got a lot of paperwork and shit in there, which I finally arranged and carried it down to the basement... I felt tired and got down on the bed, closed my eyes and I was gone, woke up 3 hours later, Tony was still "napping" lol.
Then the doorbell rang, Matt arrived. I started to cook something... Rice with Beef and my special tomato-cream sauce, tomatoes, paprika and lot of cheese. A little later Claas arrived, too. We were watching that 70's show while Tony was communication with his people back home on the messenger. After that we played some Crash Team Racing on the Play Station, the version for the PS1, this might be my favorite game ever! After Matt and Claas left we were just chilling, watching DVD's. I showed him videos of some german rap classics, we were watching And1 mixtapes, Fade to black... So at around 4 am I got to bed. When I woke up at 9, I found Tony like this:
I think his "nap" gave him a littl extra energy. Anyway, instead of going to university I decided to go back to bed.
Those were the days 1 and 2, thanks for checking it out! We will keep you updated with new exclusie music, you will get some freestyles, new snippets, videos, funny stories and all kinds of stuff!
Much Love

New Music

Whattup World?
Got some news that I wanted to share with y'all! Last weekend a homie from the states visited me. Asphate Woodhavet aka Skatterbrayne. We had a lot of fun, we went to a jazz, funk & soul party with live music and music from the turntables, went record shopping, went to the studio, to the beach, drank a lot of beer, chewed on some kind of roots, played NBA 2K8 and hung out with my people. We are in the process of recording an EP, we finished 4 joints during his time here, like 3 more will follow. I just edited a short video clip with videos and pics of the weekend, to one of the tracks we did, it's called Time Benders, I think you will feel it!
Besides that, The Soul Occs are on the rise! Tony will come to Germany in about 2 weeks. I just put a new Track on my myspace page featuring Punchline, called "Dedicated to the B's" which will be on our album called "Soul Brothers"

SoulClap's 10 years of Hip Hop, part I

I'm 22 now, I didn't experience the first generation of Hip Hop. I can't even remember when exactly i started listening to Rap. I just wanna let you know about some important stages of my life with Hip Hop, which accompanied me for the last 10 years of my life!
So it goes like this: I know I got that "Still can't stop the reign" album by Shaq, and I think that was the first one, but I don't consider it as this cause I wanted it because I was a basketball fan and saw that video on MTV. I think the first serious Rap album, where I thought, damn, I love that sound was "When disaster strikes" by Busta Rhymes, I remember hearing "Turn it up"
on a compilation, it wasn't the "Fire it up" version and not the turn it up version on the album, must have been another remix, but I fell in love with it, so I had to cop the album. I consider that my first real Hip Hop album and as far as I remember, I bought it in the beginning of '08. I didn't know anybody who was into Hip Hop, so I pulled my little brother, who is 3 years younger with me. We didn't have any knowledge, so from time to time we went to the store and went through the black music section of a cd shop and just took something. The TV was our source to get to know the new stuff.
My next big thing was "Changes" by 2Pac. I remember videotaping it so i could watch that video again and again. So shortly after that I bought 2Pacs Greatest Hits and became a huge fan of him, bought a poster, books and all kinds of stuff. I went on copping Wu-Tang stuff, Cypress Hill, Big Pun, A Tribe called Quest... I spent pretty much all my money on CD's. It usually went like this: I was watching Hip Hp shows at night, on TV to see what's up. I discovered some of the greatest ish there, like "When I be n da mic" by Rakim or "Concrete Schoolyard" by Jurassic 5. I started videotaping all kinds of videos so I culd watch them over and over again.
The next important step was when we put together our money to buy our first turntable, a Reloop 3000 whatever... I bought Q-Tips "Amplified" album along with it and my brther bought AG's dirty version. At that time I dug deeper into Hip Hop cause I started reading magazines and copped the albums of the month, which were usually really dope! Must have been in 99 or 2000. It was pretty shitty wrking with one tunrtable and no mixer, lol, cause I wanted to be a DJ! So some time later I bought a mixer and my brother bought a second turntable. I started making mixtapes for my friends, who always loved em.
Then my And1 mixtape period started. Volume 3 was the first one I got and I loved every single track on that video. "Set it off" by Snoop, Ice Cube, MC Ren, Nate Dogg, Kurupt and The Lady of Rage, damn that was hot, I even bught the whole album, although the rest was pretty shitty, just for that track! The next one turned out to be one of my all time favs, "Invincible" by CNN, i watched the part with that track on it over and over again. "We run New York" by MOP and Teflon, raw NY Hip Hop, that was just released as a white label and "The Streets" by Kool G rap were the other tracks. Volume 4 was just as good and on volume 5 there was a really special track to me! "Soulclap" by Styles P, I loved that one, and belive it or not, that's the track where I got my name from! S it will always be a very special track to me! I tried to cop all the tracks that have been on the mixtapes one to four, but I just couldn't get all of em.
2001 was the year where disposable arts came out, my favorite album till this year. (eMC will have that spot next year) It lifted my love for the music to a whole new level and Ace will always be a special person to me, for that! The next 3 years were just pretty regular, copping as many records as possible, finishng school, playing basketball and all that good stuff. The next important Hip Hop moment in my life was in July 2004! I just finished school and I flipped when I heard the news: Masta Ace is coming to my town, with Edo.G!!! Oh my god! I was so excited about that, it was the A long Hot Summer Tour, the album hasn't been out at that point. I already had the Good Ol Lve 12" and the Make some noise 12" he did with Edo.G. That was one of the best nights of my life. Seeing him on stage, with Strick, and all that energy he had, super charismatic and with a great presence, performing some of the greatest tracks of all time was really like fulfilling a dream!
When I moved to anther town in october of `04 cause I started to study, I started making beats. But I don't wanna tell that story again at this point, y'all know how it went! I'm just glad I met so many great people just because we listen to the same type of music! Hip Hop connects!
So I will come to my Top 100 Tracks of all time! It's always hard putting together these long lists, but I like doing it!

Re-Ups and New Info

I just wanted to re-up the EP and the jay-Z remix album for those who missed em, for the new readers, and give a little update on what's going on at the moment!
The EP features 12 Tracks and a beat snippet. The features on the tracks are people from all over the states, Eastcoast, Westcoast, from the South, NC... All of those MC's are incredibly talented. I'm working on a lot of stuff at the moment... You will hear me on the next Superstar Quamallah Album, on some new Perverted Monks stuff, on the Punchline Mixtape or album and on a lot of other tracks... Anyway, the tracklist for the ep is this:
01. The Soul Occupants feat. Souleez - Up again
02. Haji P - Aww Shite
03. Shaoo Zulu - Gashman
04. Dundee feat Haji P & Bru Lei - Champions
05. The Soul Occupants - Most Real
06. Stranger Day - Reality
07. Haji P - Broken English
08. Sly MC - Beautiful
09. Lox - Hip Hop is Universal
10. The Soul Occupants - My ChildHOOD

13. DJ SoulClap - Beat Snippet
Promo EP Download
The Jay-Z remix album was made in 3 days. I saw in an online store that the accapellas were out on wax and I directly ordered them. I had so many people asking me to send them, but I didn't do it. I hate people that are waiting for other people to buy stuff and then be so cocky to ask for it, buy it yourself, bitches! (Not in general, but it's the case for accapellas, cause only producers and DJ's want them...) So I was one of the first that was done with it, that was my goal, cause I knew there will be too many remixes out after a pretty short time. Although I just had 3 days the response was really good, people loved it, thanks again for everybody who downloaded it and spread the word! (Someone even made amyspace page just to represent it) Too bad rapidshare doesn't have a download count anymore, next time i will try to upload it on zshare... I have no clue how many people d-loaded the remix album and the ep...
American Clapster Download
Now the most important thing! M man Tony Tigerstyle from LA will come to Germany next month and will stay for a while, so we can record the Soul Occupants album. People are waiting for it so we need to get it started! We will try to shoot some videos too. I made a new myspace page for us, and uploaded some older tracks plus snippets from new tracks. I would be really glad if you checked it! Soul Occs Myspace
During his time in Germany we will shoot a little documentary and put up some new snippets, videos and everything, like a little diary, I will post that stuff on WYDU, if you are interested! I'm trying to get a couple of features on our album, we will definitely have Superstar Quamallah, Haji and Souleez on the joint! We will most likely have Punchline on it too and I'm trying to get Ace and Strick on the Jammy too, maybe Paula Perry... But I can't promise anything, those are just people I have in mind that will be possible...
Can't forget about my little EP with Brandon J Atlas from the Madeline Soul Crew. Please check out his myspace too!
Maxilla Blue
Thanks for reading!
One love!

SoulClaps Top 50 Tracks of 2007

To start it off simple... This year was the SHIT! I didn't hear that many dope albums and Tracks in a long time. Hip Hop is alive, I saw it when I went to the Mos Def show, I saw it when I went to a 5th element jam, with writers and breakers, I saw it when I went to see Pharoahe Monch, Reef & Eternia and I hear it when I get a new load
of records that I ordered... I'm really excited about this year. And it was really hard to put that list together, cause I'm sure I forgot something or I'd change something if i posted it next week... I don't have the time to comment on every track, like Trav, so much respect homie, but I'll try to make it as interesting as possible...
50. Kanye West – Champion
Like most tracks on the album, dope beat and so and so lyrics...
49. Marco Polo feat. Critically Acclaimed – For the Future
Dope! I listened to it a lot! The beat is hot and I really have to keep an eye (or ear) on Critically Acclaimed! Good one!
48. Brother Ali – Truth Is
This Track brings back memories, we were on tour in southern Germany and were driving through a city with the van, when this track came up, and everybody was wilding out. Crazy thig was, the weather sucked like the whole summer, and it was almost over when we were on tour, but these days, the weather was off the hook. We were on our way to a local record store when that track came up, I din't have the album till then, but I found it in that record store and copped it. Dope track from a dope album
47. Consequence – Callin Me
I'm liking that track more and more. The drum break is really nice! It's simple but dope!
46. T.I feat Jay-Z – Watch what you say
Now Is I'm thinking about writing something to it... there was dope ish than that... maybe i shouold exchange it against a joint off the kweli album, the common album, or any other allbum...
45. Hocus Pocus – Je La Soul
Really melodic french Hip Hop. There is no video for thsi, so i will posz the video from his last album from a track featureing the Procussions, you should check that!
44. DJ Jazzy Jeff feat Kardinal Offishall – She’s so Fly
Pretty uptempo! I'm a fan of Kardinal Offishall. I think he really got game. You can echange this one against the track "war" on marco's album, they are equally dope... I'm waitng for a full length album!
43. Sean Price – P-Body
This is a joint that would make me jump at a show! It sets me in a good mood!
42. Wu-Tang Clan – Life Changes
A really good RIP track! I'm feeling it! One of the better tracks off the album!
RIP Ol Dirty
41. Alicia Keys – No One
Simple but dope! Classic Alicia!
40. DJ Jazzy Jeff feat. J-Live – Practice
I know that sample... it's REALLY familiar, I was thinking a lot about it but didn't really find it... De La Soul? ATCQ? I don't know, but I think it's the right corner...
39. Freeway feat 50 Cent – Take it to the Top
Hmm, 50 Cent? I don't know why I like this track so much, but I love the beat. Up to now I didn't even pay attention to the lyrics...
38. T.I – Don’t You Wanna Be High
37. Blue Scholars – Loyalty
Used one of my favorite samples... Has already been used by Nicolay on the Foreign Exchange track All that you are, ne of my all time favs (I think Trav accidently said it was 9th on an LB track on his list)
36. Talib Kweli – Hostile Gospel
Just Blaze? Didn't think that when I first heard it, but he and Kweli are a dope combination, we already heard that on Never been in love before.
35. Superstar Quamallah – Microphone Doctor
2nd Quamallah Joint on my list. Off the album Godfood the break-fast. It was mostly an instrumental album, but all the tracks he rhymed on were extra hot. You should check it out!
34. Sean P – One
I love how they used the voice sample in the melody combined with P's lyrics. I love Sean P. It's like everything he touches turns out to be dope! Plus the dope low budget videos, haha.
33. DJ Jazzy Jeff feat Kel Spencer – The Definition
Kel Spencer? Never heard of him before... or did I? He was a feature on Will Smiths Willennium album, haha. This is my fav from Jeff's album!
32. Termanology – So Amazing
Lyrics ae crazy, i don't think it's one of the best Primo beats, but Termanology really lifts it up. he really is amazing!
31. Big Shug – Play it
Let the music play! Big Shug hits the needle on the head and speaks out what has been on my mind for long. It should have been at least a top 15 track, but it kinda lost the replay value to me, which is pretty sad...
30. Talib Kweli – Everything man
This just recently became one of my favs, the beat is hot, and the lyrics are dope. Got nothing more to say...
29. Blue Scholars – 50Thousand Deep
Might be my favorite from a really dope album! Maybe it's another track, but it was hard to decide, there were so many good tracks on it with a pretty similar soundfloor, but I picked this one cause I love the beat!
28. T.I feat Nelly – Show it to me
Now, I'm a little ashamed to have Nelly in my Top 30, but it is how it is. This track is a party starter, I remember dancing with my brother to it before we went to the new years parties. he put on the T.I Record and that track came up and we just started "dancing" I alwas put the needle back cause I wanted to hear it again. Dope Track!
27. Freeway – It’s Over
Jake One, one of my favs in the last 2 years laced this beat. it's perfect for Freeway to flow on. I've always been a Freeway fan, the new album is dope, just like the last one! Damn, now I think it should be better in this list...
26. Black Milk feat Phat Kat – Look at us Now
Beat is pretty simple, but i love the hard drums and the melody...
25. Little Brother – That ain’t Love
Dope Hook, dope beat, dope lyrics... That kinda is love, haha!
24. J Dilla – Wild
I love this track, I listened to it a lot, the kid's voice in the hook is nice! It's too sad that he had to go early, cause I was really feeling most of his newer stuff. Ruff Draft is a nice LP! I also copped the Jay Love Japan LP and I started writing to one of the beats on there because it inspired me, and I'm not a writer!
R.I.P to a genius
23. Kanye West – Everything I am
Damn I loved that track in the beginning cause the beat is hot, but this "I just take the I got a lot of cheese award" shit freaks me out... the lyrics are kinda between hot and wack...
22. Wu-Tang Clan – When the Heart Gently Weeps
It's kinda sad that the first track i heard from the album is the best, but it kinda is. Good one, but I expected more... I like the melody, the raps, I love erykah, so it's a dope track, not more not less...
21. Talib Kweli – Hot Thing
I really didn't like it that much when i first saw the video on youtube, cause I checked it on my laptop. The video was nice, but I just wasnt feeling the track. That changed when I copped it, cause you need to hear it really loud with a lot of bass. This track is a hit!
20. eMC – What it Stand For
I think it's pretty clear what is stands for after listening to this track. Put like the 4 of the illest MC's in one group and this is what you get!
19. Consequence – Forget Em
Maybe the best track from a dope album that still disappointed me. maybe i expected too much, cause I loved Take em to the cleaners. This track is like a typical quence and I can listen to it over and over again.
18. Kanye West – Flashing Lights
"She don't belive in shooting stars, but she belives in shoes and cars"... umm... yeah. OK. Anyway, I love the beat, the strings, the drums, it's like a perfect beat, I can blend out the lyrics, so I really love the whole track. You need to turn it up really loud when you are driving through the cit at night!
17. Common – The People
I kinda love this beat. The switchups fit really well and for some reason I'm a huuuuge fan of Dwele hooks. They always sound right. I don't know why this is the only track in my top 50, cause there were many dope tracks on the album. The drums on "the game" always made me wild out, i think you can exchange this track against many on the allbum that were just as dope, but i didn't wanna have common all over the list...
16. Marco Polo feat. Sadat X, AG & JuJu – Rollin
Another Marco Polo joint. Don't have much to say besides, 3 legends on the mic, and a crazy beat! He told me it took forever to finish that track, but I'm glad it happened!
15. Gym Class Heroes – Shoot Down The Stars
I'm sure some of y'all would beat me for having this in my list, but I really enjoyed this album. It's postive music that younger people can relate to in contrary to all that 50 cent ish... Shoot down the stars was one of my most played tracks this year, I love the hook, the verses are cool, good music!
14. Black Milk – Shut it Down
OK, Black Milk is the man! The Last Slum Village album kinda made his way in my all time top 10 in the last 2 years. I'm never getting tired of it, I can listen to it as often as I want and i still love ALL of the songs. His and RJ's beats just made it special. Now on his solo album we can hear himself rap on his own beats. Dope! His voice is really cool and he flows like a muh'fucker on this beat, I like the beat switchups on zthis one, the calm part with the voice sample switching to the fast part with him flowing crazy on it. Dope music!
13. Little Brother – After The Party
This is the 2nd part of "Life of the party" which was on No. 2 in my llast years list. The beat is a Khrysis beat, a really really dope one! The talking with the conscience in the begininning is hilarious. The hook is fuckin perfect, the voice fits so perfectly to the beat, it's incredible, plus some of the best LB rhymes ever. Funny lines like "Dikembe Mutombo blockin all attempts" (I love bball lines) "You geard all the cons now listen to the pros" or "I'm leanin on this Escalade but it ain't my car" I love LB! Cool guys with a lot of skills!
12. Brother Ali – Daylight
CRAZY BEAT! That was what I thought when I first heard it. (Yes it was in the van on tour, lol) Brother Ali got really good lyrics, on every track on the album, he is one of the most consistent rappers in my opinion. He got no skippers on both of his albums.
11. Nelly Furtado – Say it Right
This track was on the album that came out last year, but I really didn't pay attention to it since I hate maneater... but when this came out as a single this year, i directly fell in love with it. The beat is nice, kinda hypnotic and the hook is freakin catchy. Dope Track!
10. Alicia Keys – Tell you Something
I've always been a huge Alicia Keys fan! I can really say she is the woman of my dreams, hot as hell, she can sing, she's smart... but forget about it, haha. This is my favorite from the new album. It really creates a tensed atmosphere. Nobody can do that as good as her. So if you read this alicia, please merry me ;)
09. Hocus Pocus feat T-Love & The Procussions – Vocab!
French Hip Hop! Never listened to it a lot, although there is always some dope stuff. But Hocus Pocus is the shit. The guy raps and makes crazy beats as 20syl. He featured the Procussions on the single, just like on the last album. The Hook and the message are just nice! I uploaded the track for you, since I think there is no chance for you to cop it in the states, I really recommend d-loading it, cause I guarantee you you will like it!
08. Superstar Quamallah – Love has Made Us
I finally found Quame on myspace this year and this was the first track on his page. I directly fell in love with it. Quame became a good friend over the time and his new album will be out in 08, you will hear the one or the other track that was produced by me, so stay tuned...
07. Eternia feat. Torae & Ms Davis – No Where No More
I think I already said enough about this track in my Eternia post last month. This track is magic!
06. Kanye West, Nas, Rakim, KRS One – Classic (DJ Premier Remix)
What a crazy lineup for a track? I don't know if you ever heard the original version, but I think it sucked. Primo's version is really hot tho. Plus one of the best KRS verses in a long time (and I don't like him). Those 4 guys on the same track with a primo beat just have to be top 10...
05. eMC feat. Sean P – Git Some
This album is my most anticipated ever. Period. And they are always pushing it back, but now it looks like it will really come out in March. There will be a new single out soon, so keep your eyes and ears open. Check their myspace for tour dates, they are touring the states in march. This track is the b-side from the What it stand for 12". I like it more, cause this beat is totally sick. The lyrics are crazy on both tracks, I just wasn't feeling the beat on the other one that much. Plus "git some" got my favorite line of the year in it. Punch: "Like Magic, you say you ill but I don't see it" This line always cracks me up.
04. Sean Price feat Chaundon – Hearing Aid
This track caught me from the beginning, when I got the Jess Price album. It always made me laught in the beginning when Sean P was talking... "I worked so hard to be this stupid"... "english at it's finest, baby"... The Beat is very simple but the melody is just dope! Plus Chaundon is totally murdering it, that dude is crazy!
"Best of both Sean's part 2 are you feelin it?" Yessir, I am!
03. Talib Kweli – Stay Around
This was the track that stuck out from the beginning, when I got the advance version of Eardrum. I wanted to wait till the album is out, but I couldn't wait any longer, i needed to listen to some stuff, cause the release was still 2 months away. Kweli is awesome, still. He is one of my heroes since Train of Thought and he didn't disappoint me. Sta around got a dope Pete Rock beat and like one of the catchiest hooks. The verses are dope too. Can't ask for more!
02. Marco Polo feat. Masta Ace – Nostalgia
OK, I really expected the Marco Polo album to be dope... but... it is better and this is the best track on it. It was recorded in exchange for the "Do it man" beat on Ace's A long hot summer LP, so it's pretty old, but that beat is one of the best I heard in a looong time! And Ace, as my favorite MC rips it as usual! The video is like real Hip Hop videos are supposed to be. Simple but hot!
01. Keith Murray feat Tyrese – Nobody Do It Better
This joint got sent to me by Tony Tigerstyle, who told me that I needed to check that joint out. He said, it got the same drums as "Most Beautifullest thing" and I was eager to hear it. From the first moment on I knew this is something special. The Beat is crazy, defintely one of the better Erick Sermon beats. Keith rhymes really dope on it and the hook is really kinda magical to me. I think I never heard a track in a row that often (except Beautiful by Masta Ace). In this year, he was right with the Title, Can't nobody do it better!
I hope you enjoyed it you might have found something you still need to cop!
Please support the real Hip Hop by BUYING the stuff you like!
I didn't include any of my tracks in the list, it's hard for me to compare my stuff to the other stuff and I just don't wanna do it. I hope to find the one or the other track from my EP in your list tho!

American Clapster - The American Gangster remix album

Hey Peeps!
I locked myself down in my appartment the last 3 days, to make a remix of Jay-Z's American Gangster album. I got the Accapellas on Thursday after I ordered them on Tuesday. I was a little disappointed with the Beats on the Original, so I had to do it. Went to the 2nd hand record store digging for some nice soul records on Friday. Then came back home and started. I just finished it an hour ago.
Please download it, it's FREE!
Feel free to share it with your friends and buy the original if you haven't already, Jay is really telling some nice shit on it!
And I would be more than Happy to receive some feedback from y'all!
