Free Album: Charlie Smarts - F'Alex

I was excited to see this, a solo album from Charlie Smarts. For those of you in the know, you know that Charlie is part of WYDU favs, Kooley High, a group that I've been pushing since the first time I've heard them. I don't know if I'd call Charlie the lead man of Kooley, but he is rather prominent in the groups personality and is seen out on the blogosphere quite a bit. I haven't had the chance to listen to the album just yet, but I'm ready to throw it on the iPod tonight and give it a listen. Oh yeah, and it's free, so no excuses for not checking it out. If you are lacking hard drive space, delete something.... -Trav

Charlie Smarts - F'Alex Zshare (Full Album)

Track Listing:
01. Charlie and the Shrink
02. Medicine
03. Well Done
04. My Baby
05. Lovin' Me
06. Ms. America
07. Where You Are feat. HaLo & Tab-One
08. Put You On
09. Anatomy
10. Out Of This World
11. Fly
12. Bonanza
13. The Exit
14. Starbucks
15. Mr. Nobody (Bonus)

This joint is the the first release in the "Kool Summer" of 2009. Charlie Smarts of Kooley High is the first of the three emcees that make up the NC collective to put out a project. F'Alex will be followed by Tab One's "Tabloids" in August and Rapsody's "Return of The B-Girl" after that.

A bit more about the project....
F'Alex is the coming out party for Charlie Smarts, although amazing together Charlie (whose real name is "Alex Thompson") shows that the emcees of Kooley High can shine just as bright when doing their own thing. F'Alex is a fun, upbeat, yet introspective album that is a journey through love & relationships both sexual and otherwise through Charlie's eyes. The title "F'Alex" which stands for "F*&%k Alex" is a play on words in that it represents the sexual "phallic" and also an allusion to his experince in the rap game due to the fact that people either want to fuck with Alex or they say "Fuck Alex!". Production is provided by the production team of Kooley High's Tom Foolery and Sinopsis with some assistance from others as well.

Breez Evahflowin "Breez Deez Treez" album sampler

Now available for free download is the album sampler of Breez Evahflowin's upcoming album "Breez Deez Treez" to be released August 11th on Domination Recordings.

6. When You Fall

9. Rope
10. I Failed

12. Over feat. Swave Sevah

About the release: Writing about personal struggles familiar to many of us, New York MC and Stronghold member Breez Evahflowin's new release is a personal and thoughtful album about adjusting to extreme life changes. Taking a hiatus from NYC, Breez is forced to uproot himself from his only known home in New York to reposition himself in the woods of Asheville North Carolina. Through a steady stream of beats from NYC producer Dave "Daveytree" Archuletta via internet, he is encouraged to thoroughly explore his innermost thoughts free of distraction and competition. It is also through these beats that he deals with the diagnosis of his mother's cancer and passing, which ultimately brings him back to NYC (see track #8 "Moms"). A combination of pain, anger, loss, triumph, despair, fortitude and hope in the face of life's challenges, delivered just as the nation and the world adjust to the extreme changes that have been predicted to come. Track #2 "Luck vs. Skill," and the exclusive single "Over" features guest lyrics from Harlem's very own Swave Sevah (The Source Magazine "Best Unsigned Hype" of 2008), and introducing veteran Bill T. Jones performer Shaneeka Harrell on vocals in her hip-hop debut. "Breez Deez Treez" also features guest appearances from Ike P., Dojah and Symphonic.

Reviews by a Rapper: MC Sergio - Makin' A Killin'

I sat in a dark alley.

My car's engine idled and sputtered before finally coming to rest. I promised myself I'd get a tune up, but right now there were more pressing issues.

I waited in the alley...anxious.

A figure appeared behind a cloud of mist bursting from a cracked pipe by a fire escape. Could that be him? As the figure got closer I marked the ratty old hat and stained trench coat. I committed everything to memory that I could, but the most important thing was missing: a face. His collar seemed to conceal his entire face. At first glance one might think there was a black hole where his face should have been.

He sat a small package on the damp concrete and stepped back through the smoke before i had a chance to react. I got out of the vehicle...walking slowly toward the mysterious package. i reached down to pick it up- the sound of metal clanging to the side of me! I whipped around to see a rat scuttling away. The pest had knocked over a paint can and scared the hell out of me in the process. I grabbed the package without hesitation this time, turned around and hurried back to the car.

A wry smile crept onto my face as i opened the package...it contained a single cd: MC Sergio "Making A Killin'".

Okay so maybe it didn't happen that way, but still, I am peeping this MC Sergio album, and since you're here...lets talk about it.

The first thing Travis told me in prep for this album review was that it'd be an artist/album that I'd never heard. He was right...I ain't neeeever heard of MC Sergio. There's honestly not a lot of info on him so the music will had to speak for itself.

As far as the sound, it's about right for the time (late 80's). Drum breaks, funky loops, the prerequisite club song as well as the song about the lady-killing rapper vs. the man-eater that was almost too much (in the end the rapper always bones). There's also the "I'm the most dangerous emcee" song. Pretty much all of it is here, for what its worth.

Sergio himself sounds like a cross between a young L.L. Cool J (think "I Need Love" L.L.) and a young Chris Rock (Think I'm Gonna Git You Sucka). That's kinda worth a listen on it's own. The beats have a lot of the things that a hip hopper/crate digger would know right of the bat. This isn't a good or a bad thing. I guess that's the biggest problem with this album. Nothing really stands out. The skirt chasing antics of "Sarrona" are amusing, the club song "Here We Go Again" is entertaining for all the wrong reasons. Other high notes include "Nothing But The Money", a set of cautionary tales about being obsessed with money, "Your My Opponent" and "Self Destruct". However, the ideas and concepts on these songs have all been done somewhere else...and more effectively at that.

As we know though, everything isn't for everybody. If your looking for a straight classic you won't find it with MC Sergio, but if you're a hip-hopper that loves the late 80's sound you may just find something to love here.

http://rapidshare.com/files/258594703/mc_sergio_-_making_a_killin___1989_.rar

1. Sarrona
2. The Journalist
3. Wanted Dead Or Alive
4. Here We Go Again
5. Nothin' But The Money
6. Makin A Killin'
7. No Half Steppin
8. Your My Oppnent
9. In The Name Of Love
10. Self Destruct

I give it a 2 1/2 stars out of 4. Or...I would if i had a rating system, some star stickers or something. But you guys came this far with me...use your imaginations! Concentrate! You can see them can't you?? The staaaaaars-

*sigh*

Yea. Me neither.

Social Light Sounds Presents: ETheReal & Paul Mighty Digital 12 Inch Single

http://sociallightsounds.com/new/

FREE DOWNLOAD (CLICK HERE)

Remember the days when underground Hip Hop singles were found only on vinyl? The classic 12 inch format with an A side and a B side. Dirty versions to blast through your stereo, clean versions for your mom’s favorite radio station, instrumentals for Emcees to rock over, and acapellas for DJs to cut and mix. We miss those days too!

For all the Hip Hop nostalgics, Social Light Sounds and The Butcher’s Block have teamed up to release an exclusive “Digital 12 Inch” as a Free Download. It features three new tracks from Nite People’s lead vocalist E The Real and Massachusetts producer Paul Mighty. This release includes everything you would expect from a 12 inch single on vinyl. Instrumentals, acapellas, dirty, and clean versions.

Side A kicks off with the title track “Small Talk”, where E breaks down why small talk gets on his nerves and the mindless dialogue people are subjected to in everyday conversations. Paul provides an up tempo beat laced with hard funk, steady drums, and a psychedelic guitar riff. The second track of Side A is called “Key To Success”. E brings a relentless flow over a vintage style of production from the Mighty one. Raw social commentary and witty wordplay rides over a sharp break beat while the scratchy horns blare out of the speaker.

The B side includes a guest appearance from Worcester, MA Emcee Spit Supreme (Rawkus 50, All Elements) who goes back and forth with E The Real in a never seen before bar structure called “4, 2 1’s”. The beat rides smooth and complements the lyrics creating a classic soundscape. Guaranteed to make your neck hurt!

Now that the 12 Inch is digital, blast the dirty version in your iPod, include the clean version in your mother’s next podcast, freestyle over the instrumentals on your lab top, or remix your own versions. Enjoy!

The Soul Occs - Swing Through

People have been asking over and over again when the album will be coming... Due to personal reasons I didn't have any time within the last year to mix the album or even get it mixed, but now that the exams are over I will work on it. It's the first time in 1 1/2 years that I actually have some free time.

I'm giving away the summer hit from the album called "Swing Through". It has a happy, soulful BBQ vibe, and I'm sure y'all will dig it.

http://sharebee.com/9680fbde

I'm sorry for not posting that much within the last months. I will also care about that in the next weeks. I'm working on some topics that go more deeply into the music and culture, and also some off-topic posts. We need to get some more discussions going on here! I hope everyone has been well! You know I love y'all!

Peace, Clap

Yaggfu Front

As I sit down at roughly 11:30 at night after getting shit together for my pending move (nothing out of state at this time, just a move down the street), my mind is numb, I'm tired, yet I started thinking of things to re-post. Most of my CDs, CD-Rs, and records are already boxed up (after doing rush packing way too many times in my life, I'm actually ahead of schedule for this move) so I'm at the mercy of what is on my computer. Not that is a bad thing with 500gb plus of music on my computer, it's just that everything I could think of was boxed away or it was all original ideas that I wanted to wait to tackle when I wasn't strapped for time.

As I scrolled through my music, it was either things that had been seen elsewhere, stuff that could still be found on WYDU somewhere or stuff that I had gotten myself on other blogs (when I still had the time to check other blogs...bleah). Then I got to Yaggfu Front. I did a search on WYDU and didn't come up with a post on them. They were one of my favorite groups from that time period (mid 90's), sort of like a poor mans Pharcyde (yes I'm stealing that from somewhere else), but I always dug them. Truth be told, back in 2006, D Ranged and Jingle Bel where going to be WYDU's first interview. Milk D beat them out then eventually I lost contact with the two members (Spin 4th was not involved at the time). It's unfortunate that I've never done a proper post on the group or got that interview done with them. Since I have time restraints tonight, I'm just going to toss these two projects up.

The first is the Secret Tapes project that released in very limited quantities, so limited that I've never seen a physical copy of it anywhere. It was released on Mends Recordings and consisted of remixes, unreleased material and other stuff from '91 til '01.

The second is one that was one that they posted on their blog or their myspace....or maybe it was both. I don't remember. They were talking about making a comeback, hence the myspace, the blog, the interview that never happened. They were pretty excited about it when I was speaking to them in the late summer/early fall of '06, then nothing. None the less, there isn't much new in terms of music on this, but it's mixed together and a nice little thing to have if you are a hardcore fan.

As I mentioned on top, this is the wax LP version that Polarity himself ripped from his collection and it doesn't include one song that the CD version had. For those of you not up on this, this is Godfather Don and Kool Keith before Keith got all spacey and shit. Excellent album, grab if you've missed the first 5 or 6 times I've posted it up here.

Fresh Friday, Drop Two: Amen

Our second drop comes from an MC from South Carolina. This was sent to me by my man MIDIMarc, a fellow artist hailing from South Carolina. The dude's name is Amen, I was already familiar with him from my visits to The Lawn (The Justus League forums), so I had no problem checking out the music. The album is a combination of things I like; dope soulful beats and thoughtful, meaningful lyrics. Amen can drop the seriousness or he can just be an MC and rip all new comers. Very worth checking out if you are into that southern soul music feel....

Amen, he's just released a free album called "Head On". It features production by MIDIMarc, Khrysis, Keelay and Zaire and more. Real dope stuff.

Fresh Friday, Drop One: Alex Stange

Wow, if you haven't noticed, it's been a rather dull week around these parts. It's probably going to continue that way for a couple more weeks. This weekend I'm heading out of town for a weekend long bachelor party. Needless to say, debauchery and hilarity are bound to ensue. Then next weekend, I'm moving. Not one of my out of state moves that I've done four times in the past 13 years, but none the less moving sucks all the way around. It's going to take me most of next week to get ready and most of the week after to unpack.

After that, I think you will see some changes in WYDU. I've been wrestling with what to do with the site since I haven't been happy with the direction it's gone in the past six months. You might see less posts, but more in depth and more older school stuff. We'll see

Alright, so I'm here to throw some stuff at the wall and see what sticks and that's we'll post for the Fresh Friday series for today....

The first comes from an up and coming producer out of my home region, the great Northwest, hailing from Portland (Oregon that is) it's Alex Stange. Equipped with some nice samples, this is a quick, but nice little instrumental project. I've been on a big instrumental kick lately and this has gotten some run this week. I'm interested to see what the dude has next on the agenda..... - Trav

Quite Nyce - Jazzolution

Massachusetts MC Quite Nyce has been, well, Quite Nice. Yes, bad pun, but dude is one of my favorite "new" MCs on the scene. He dropped one of the nicer albums in the first quarter with Raydar Ellis and then he was in on the quite enjoyable RADIx album that dropped a few months ago. Now dude is on the solo swag and this promises to be an album worth checking out - Trav

Quite Nyce - Jazzolution

For the next month, Massachusetts MC Quite Nyce will be sharing tracks from his upcoming free Mixtape, Hello, My Name is Quite Nyce (August 18th), as well as his digital solo album, Through My Eyes (August 25th).

As one of the North East's most prolific MCs in the game today, Nyce has completed three world tours with legendary hip hop acts such as Das Efx, Onyx, Lords of the Underground and Afu-Ra. Quite Nyce has continued his success into 2009 with perhaps the biggest year of his career to date. On top of his exciting upcoming Mixtape and solo album, Nyce has already released the critically acclaimed collaboration album with Raydar Ellis entitled, The Champs vs. The League, and began recording his album with Geoff from Portishead.

Combining his insatiable hunger for hip hop and his love for conscious poetry, Quite Nyce is a veteran artist ready to galvanize thirsty hip hop fans with his boom bap bravado and head noddin' narratives. The leaked singles that will appear on blog sites over the next month will show hip hop heads who Quite Nyce really is and why he will never have to introduce himself to you ever again.

Below is the first leak from the Mixtape (Free Download on August 18th) AND Album (available digitally August 25th), Jazzolution.
