Happy New Years
We are back! I've been busy and on the road the last couple days along with the usual holiday type stuff going on. Things are starting to get back to normal, although I will be out of town again this weekend, but I hope to have the blog up and running close to normal this week. Hope everyone had a happy and safe New Years. Mine was actually uneventful, with me actually staying home alone after I gotten into town around 8pm that night. I haven't had an enjoyable New Years Eve night in several years. It's usually a night filled with amatuer drinkers who end up doing stupid shit, and the party most of my friends were at was up in the mountains, so I said "screw it". It's always a crazy night with crazy shit going on, so hopefully everyone made through safe and sound.
R.I.P. Darrent Williams. I'm not a Denver Bronoco's fan, but I enjoyed watching Darrent Williams play. The kid had some passion for the game and was fun to watch. For him to lose his life in a senseless tragedy is unfortunate.

If you all haven't figured it out yet, I'm claiming Boise as my hometown (it's the third largest city in the Northwest now after Seattle and Portland). I've lived there most of my life, went to high school there, and attended Boise State for four years. My parents still live there and I go there when I visit my parents, hell I just spent a week there. So to say I'm amped about last nights game would be a small understatment. Little Boise State from the small WAC beat the mighty Oklahoma Sooners.
I hope if you are from the states, you had a chance to catch that game if you are a sports fan. I honestly thought it would be a tough road for BSU, but they jumped out to a 14-0 lead and a 28-10 lead. Little Boise State, that had no business playing with the big boys. Little Boise State who was going to be stomped by the mighty Oklahoma Sooners. It was 28-10 midway through the third quarter. That is when the fun started though. OU battled back to 28-26 with under two minutes left. "No problem, they still have to make the 2pt conversion" I thought after the neighbors pounded on the walls for the forth time of the night after I chucked a shoe up against the wall in disgust. First attempt, Pass Interference on Boise State, move the ball to the one. Second attempt, OU throws a fade into the corner of the end zone to the tight end, but wait, another flag. This time it's an illegal shift on OU, take the ball back to the six yard line. "Even better I think". Not so. After looking for another fade to the corner, Thompson throws to the back of the end zone for the 2pt conversion. 28-28 with a little more over a minutes left.
Then the unthinkable happens. Jared Zebransky throws an INT to a Sooner defender as he takes it to the house. 35-28. "FUCK" I shouted out as I chucked my BSU hat into my front door and chucked another shoe into the neighbors wall just to piss them off. Next thing I know, it's Fourth and Eighteen and I'm ready to head to bed, pissed as hell. I stood in the hall way with the changer in my hand to flip the TV off and throw it as soon as they missed the conversion. Zabransky drops back, throws and on the mark bullet to Drisdan James, who runs a few yards and right before he gets met by an OU defender he flips the ball back to Jared Rabb who takes off another 35 yards for the remarkable touch down with seven seconds left. OVERTIME BABY!
In overtime, Oklahoma gets the ball first, hands off to Adrain P
eterson who immediately scores on a 25 yard touchdown. No sweat. Boise State is on the five yard line with another fourth down facing them. Shotgun formation, whats this? Zabransky shifts out into a WR slot and the ball is hiked back to Vinny Parretta who then hits Derek Schouman in the end zone. FUCKING AMAZING. I'm going nuts by this time. BANG BANG, more banging on the wall....fuck off I think to myself. Then instead of tying it up, Coach Peterson decides to end this thing once and for all. Looking back at it, I don't blame him at all. The way Oklahoma scored with ease on the first possesion in overtime, it was obvious that BSU was tired. Zebransky drops back, acts like he is going to throw a screen, Ian Johnson comes behind him, takes the ball and scampers untouched into the endzone.....BOISE WINS, BOISE WINS!!!!
The city of Boise has grown in leaps and bounds since my younger years. It has al
ways been a football town. When I was going to BSU it was still a 1 AA school. The stadium was always pretty packed back then, but we used to get tanked and sit in the very top, so we wouldn't get in trouble. I guess now, if you don't get student tickets in the first half hour or so, you don't get them. The stadium is sold out every game. They sold out their alotment of Fiesta Bowl tickets (17,500) in 15 minutes and if you saw the game, you saw blue and orange everywhere. Little Boise State is making the big time. Now how about a freaking playoff system so Boise State can get their chance at a title????

"The Last Sucker Who Tried To Dis Me, Cold Got His Neck Snapped

I said I wouldn't do discographies, basically because everyone and their dog was doing them. Well, I always reserve the right to change my mind whenever the figgidy fuck I feel like it. I don't have much to post up while I'm away from my collection or the lack of hi-speed, so sometimes you got to work with what you have. What I have is some discographies that I haven't seen around the blog circuit. If I'm going to do something fairly common, I at least want to come with some flavor not seen yet. That's what takes us to today's discorgraphy, from a group I don't think gets nearly enough credit it the grand scope of west coast hip hop, Above the Mutha Fuckin' Law.
Hailing from Ponoma, California, this Wesyde group has gone through numerous member lineups and just as many record labels through out their six album/one E.P. career. They first popped up on the scene in 1990 with the (supposebly) Dr.Dre produced album "Livin' Like Hustlers" on Eazy E's Ruthless Label. The orginal line up for that album was Cold 187, KMG The Illustrator, Total K-Oss and Go Mack. Cold 187's uncle was Willie Hutch, a well known Motown artist.
The album came in at 10 pure west coast cuts that had that west coast funk to it. Some debate over who really did most of the production has arisen over the years. Cold 187 has said the group did most of the production on the LP, while Dr.Dre gets the majority of the credit. While it's arguable, but this is probably the best produced album out of their catalouge. The majority of the material sounds Dre-ish in nature, but there is also some stuff that doesn't sound like what Dre was coming with during that time period.
In between projects, N.W.A. and the Ruthless roster went under a major upheval. In 91' ATL dropped the Vocally Pimpin' EP, with no Dre beats to be found. It produced the single "4 The Funk Of It", which some credit as the actual first "G-Funk" track.
ATL has always had some bad blood for both Dre and Ice Cube. During the New Music S
eminar in 91', Above The Law and crew chased Ice Cube and his Lench Mob off the stage. It was also rumored that members of ATL beat down King Sun, who was sticking up for Cube, although that is not confirmed. In numerous interviews, group leader Cold 187 has discredited Dre's contribution to their first album and creating their defining sound along with expressing his feelings that he, not Dre, was responsible for the G-Funk sound, which can be found through out their sophomore release, "Black Mafia Life".
There is no denying that "Black Mafia Life" has a different sound that most projects coming out at the time. The album featured 2pac, Money B, and Shock G from Digital Underground and produced some fairly popular tracks for the time with "Call It What U Want" & "V.S.O.P". The album did go gold, along with their third release "Uncle Sam's Curse".
"Uncle Sam's Curse" featured an even more heavily G-Funk influence that left some saying that this album was better than Dre's "Chronic" (I'm not one of those people, but it is good). "Black Superman" was the hit from the album. This would be the last album they would release on Ruthless as they would release "Time Will Reveal" on Tommy Boy in 96' after a short stint on Death Row of all places. This would be the start of the label shuffle for the crew as they would release "Legends" in 98' on Tommy Boy/Warner Bros, then would offer up "Forever Rich Thugs: Book One" on Cold 187um aka Big Hutch's Street Solid label in 99'.
The group hasn't released another collective effort since that release. Big Hutch dropped two solo joints since that time, his "Executive Decisions" in 99' which is critically acclaimed then his lackluster effort in the form of "Live From The Ghetto".
The group has ran into legal troubles as of late. Total K-oss was arrested for drug charges and child endangerment when he was busted with crack cocaine in his house. Cold 187 um was arrested on drug charges when his record label was busted with a large quanity of weed in 04'. I'm not sure what happened since that incident. It's wait and see for the ATL crew.

"My Whole Firm Team is Ill No Doubt..."
Back in 1996, bootleg records of radio show freestyles were everywhere. The internet hadn’t really taken off yet, so for people like me living on the other side of the world it was pretty much the only way to hear this kind of stuff. One of the best series of freestyle wax was called “Wild Style” which collected the guest appearance freestyle sessions on Funkmaster Flex’s show. Each volume typically featured the (then) cream of the east coast crop doing their thing on all the latest instrumentals.
This Cormega & Nas session taken from Wild Style Volume #2 is kinda interesting if only for the fact that tracks featuring these two are few and far between. Nas pretty much sticks to material from his then-unreleased ‘It Was Written’ album, but Cormega really steals the show. Maybe I’m crazy, but I’ve always thought Mega delivery sounded a lot sharper on old material like this and ‘Affirmative Action’ than anything he did on his albums, listen and make up your own mind.
Add classic beats like ‘Stages & Lights’ by Sadat X and ‘Clones’ by the Roots into the mix and you have some certified flavor. The debacle involving the replacement of Cormega in the Firm (by Nature) for the group’s disastrous collaboration album and the ensuing war of words between Mega and Nas is well-documented, but the duo’s chemistry here hints at what might have been.
NB: For collectors interested in the record itself, it also features Tribe Called Quest (with Consequence), Heltah Skeltah and Ghostface going off the top of the head and is probably the best entry in the series.

Merry Christmas
First and foremost, I'd like to wish all the regular visitors here a Merry Christmas or whatever you may celebrate and a Happy New Year to go with it. Thanks to all of you frequent this site, without you guys, I wouldn't have the motivation to do this, so without you, there would be no WYDU. Thanks! Hopefully, Santa brought everyone what they wanted. I was pretty lucky this year and scored a digital camera and a new computer, so I'm rather happy with my loot.
Well I survived the Holiday Blizzard of 2006. That is the most snow I've ever since at once since I moved to Denver back in 2004. The most I had experianced before that was 15 inches in April of 05'. I had 25 inches in my apartment parking lot, along with drifts that were up to my waist, roughly 4 feet. It was an absolute mess. The city was basically brought to a stand still and if you were unlucky enough to be out on the highways, most notably the Boulder turnpike, you spent your night in a city shelter. Good to see my fellow Coloradoans Notes and Kido made it out alright. I, myself, was stuck in my apartment for basically two days. Could be worse I guess. It took me two hours Friday to unbury my car. I was supposed to fly out of Denver Friday morning. DIA didn't open back up until Friday afternoon, so needless to say, that didn't happen. I didn't even mess with it, I had the airline credit me for a future ticket and got in my car and drove fourteen hours in snow, ice and fog. Guess what it was doing when I got into town? Yup, that's right, fucking snowing. I'm offically sick of snow. Santa can shove his white Christmas up his ass.
I haven't been around the internet since Wednesday. I usually like to stockpile some uploads then share them when I have the time when I'm on vacation, but I didn't have the chance this time. So since I'm away from my collection, plus the fact that my parents don't know that hi-speed internet even exsits, let alone have it, I'll be jacking albumbase links. I know most of you have albumbase, but some don't, plus it might be some stuff you don't know was on there.

I'm not very big on Christmas Themed Hip Hop. It's not that I find it sacreligious or anything. I'm not religious and don't me get started on the topic of religion. It's just that there is nothing very similar in the terms of Hip Hop and what you think of Christmas. Needless to say, I don't own any "true" Hip Hop Christmas albums. Yes, I have "Christmas In Hollis", but who hasn't heard that. But in the "spirit" of Christmas, this is the closest thing to a Hip Hop Christmas carrol I own (okay, it's an albumbase link, but I do own it).
I realize most of you should already have this in your crates, but for those who don't, or lost it, here it is again. It's more of a maxi single, coming in at 4 cuts and an intro of pure Eazy E influenced attitude. I don't remember the exact chronological events leading up to this (nor am I going to take the time to research it right now), but I believe this is after NWA had all but split up. "Merry Mutha ******Xmas" has the Atbann Klann, the precursor to everyone's favorite pop rap grou, The Black Eyed Peas...oh yeaaaa. Eazy was never as good holding a whole album effort by himself, but at four songs, this was just about as much as one could stomach of Eazy without regurgatating. It's good for a fun, short lived, time and also a crucial piece of any Eazy discography. So crack open that 40 tonight that Santa left under the tree and throw on some gangsta shit.

When Method Man Still Had It...
Well it looks like my man Travis is buried under 50 feet of snow with an icicle hanging out his nose like Dennis Quaid in that wack-ass ‘Day After Tomorrow’ flick right now, so I’m gonna take the opportunity to break out a couple of joints you may not have heard before. I’m stuck on dial-up internet like it’s 1997 so I’m not gonna be able to hit you guys off with any albums but hopefully I’ll have some ish that may be new to at a least a handful of you. So let’s get down to business…
It had a couple of okay moments (and admittedly wasn’t nearly as abominable as the wretched T0 from 2004), but Method Man’s recent 4:21… The Day After was overall just another disappointment on the big pile of mediocre records to come out in ‘06. With three weak long-players in a row, it’s sometimes hard to remember why everyone used to make such a big deal about the original Johnny Blaze. Here’s a rather good Meth freestyle that someone recorded off the radio and bootlegged on vinyl back in the Wu Tang empire’s halcyon days of 1995, which might remind you what all the hype was about.
The production on this track (courtesy of Dirtman) is excellent, and just goes to highlight the main weakness of much of Clifford Smith’s recent output, as he’s lyrically one of the more consistent rappers around. Plus he gives a shout out to the cult classic ‘Evil Dead 2’ (word to Bruce Campbell), which pretty much makes this one essential in my books.

The Movies & DJ Red Alert
Travis' Holiday Drinking Tip #1: Never play drinking games with hard alcohol. The results never end good. We won't even get into that story.
I have to admit, I'm kind of running low on mojo and ideas on future topics to cover. I had a list of things I wrote out in July, when this blog started taking off, about what kind of series and things I wanted to cover. Well that list is kind of at an end. I only have so much in my vault and only so many "sources", that coupled with the rise of some really great blogs, my ideas and albums that I have to share has been greatly reduced. I had a "Philly Hip-Hop/Hill-Top Hustlers" series lined up, but a bunch of Steady and Schoolly albums got posted up on the internet before I got the chance to start the series. I think it's great that these things are covered, it just makes it more challenging coming up with fresh things. I said at the beginning I was going to try to avoid posting up any albums that have been posted up on the net in the past 2-3 months, so it makes things challenging to say the least. I might have missed somethings a couple of times, but most of the time I've held off on things that have been posted in recent weeks.
No worries, I'm not pulling the plug on the blog or anything. I just need some kind of rejuvenation and hopefully this upcoming week long break might just be what I need. I also need to get with the other contributors (whoever wants to remain) and try to drum up some ideas. I still have one series lined up (which I kind of screwed myself a bit by covering requests) that hopefully will come by the end of the year. I have some ideas for weekly topics (reviews, new artist features, interviews hopefully) that I hope to incorporate into the blog at the start of the new year. If any of you were around when we broke this into two blogs for a short while, (Wake Your Daughter Up & Wake Your Step-Daughter Up) we covered the more modern aspects of Hip Hop on bombfirst.com. I might end up incorporating some of those ideas into this blog. I just want to keep things interesting and unique.
If anyone has ideas/or things they would like to see, feel free to drop a comment in either the comment sections, the cbox, or rip me off an email. (And no discographies, everyone and their dogs does those, there are more than enough out there)

First and foremost, I have to give huge props to Steve aka DJ Raider for sending a bunch of Red Alert shows my direction. Yes, I'll be sharing them with you all over the next few days. I know I already did a radio series, but I was pissed because I didn't have any of my Red Alert radio tapes converted.
I have a special place in my memories when it comes to Red Alert. It was his shows that I first got my greedy little hands on when I was younger, so he's always been my favorite radio jock. His shows always have the best guests, the best mixes, and the best exclusives.
The man is a legend, pure and simple. Not only is he reverened in the hip hop circles, he is also recognized in the popular culture as well. He has been inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, named an honary ambassador in the United Nations for his works in field of music and been named as one of the 50 most influential people in music by Rolling Stone magazine.
Red's been around since day one, attending the parties of Kool Herc, hitting up places such as The Tunnel, The Roxy, and Latin Quarters and seeing Grandmaster Flash and others spin up in the place. It wasn't before to long that Red was DJing his own parties and soon become the "offical DJ" for Afrika Bambaata and the Zulu nation. Red would go on to become one of the first Hip Hop radio DJ's for KISS FM in New York before moving on to WBLS. He's also been apart of the massive BDP crew, DJ'd for Sparky Dee during the whole "Roxanne, Roxanne" era and done several albums and mixes.

Another "classic" from back in the day. It's been a looooong ass time since I've seen this, but you should all know the plot. It's based on "Def Jam's" early days with some added plots and twists (Russell & Run trying to nail Shelia E???). It kind of read like a who's who of hip hop music at the time, with Fat Boys, Force MD's, LL, the Beasties, Kurtis Blow and other hip hop & R&B artists making apperances throughout the movie. Who can forget LL's radio scene? It also is filmed in some historic spots like "The Fever" and the Marble Hill projects.
"Tender Love" still takes me back to after school dances back in Jr. High, wanting to ask that "special girl" to dance during the next slow song, wearing your white shoes, because the black light made the glow real cool. The rest of the soundtrack actually gets better as it ages, either that, everything now just sound like crap and this sounds good compared to that stuff. I don't remember "She's On It" being a single, but I know damn well there was a video for it. It had them at the beach chasing women around and something to do with blowing themselves up at the end. Friday Requests....
Nope, you didn't miss anything. I didn't ask for any requests since I'm on my way out of town for the weekend. This was Chino XL's original group before he came solo, along with Kaoz who did the production on these tracks. As legend goes, Profile was given this EP back in 91' who then passed it on to Rick Rubin at Def American. Somehow, Profile dropped the ball, and things fell through with Kaoz after they dropped "Into The Pit" b/w "No Sollin Rollin" in 92' and "Urination-Al" in 93' before the young Chino (he was 17 when they formed) would go solo....the rest, as they say is history....
This is some pretty cool shit. I had never heard any of this. It sounds reminiscent of stuff coming out in 91'-92', almost sounds like some Dante Ross/SD50's type stuff with some early inklings of "Horrorcore". Chino sounds basically the same as he did on "Here To Save You All", which was kind of his downfall, taking a whole album of the same flow and tone grew old over a full length, but it sounds good on a short EP such as this.

WYDU at The Movies & Various Other Things
T-minus seven hours and counting. That's when my last final is today, thank goodness. I'm to old for this shit. At least there is the end of finals celebration, I'm sure alcohol is going to be involved somehow in tonights festivities. Needless to say, I'm a little behind with things I wanted to cover this week. Big ups to Brian for posting up some good stuff yesterday. Lot's of things going in these last weeks of the year, in the hip hop spectrum and in everyday life. We'll jump into a few things today about somethings going on, along with posting up some more movie tracks. I also got a few things that I'm toying around with for the site in the next couple weeks, a few weekly type things and of course lot's of downloads. Trying to keep things fresh for both you, the visitor, and me, because I've been running out of creative ideas and motivation as of late. Anyway, let's jump into it.
NEW SITES
As usual, I try to keep up with the new blogs that seem to be popping up on a weekly basis. Some of the stuff is really good, some of it not so good. There have been a couple good sites that have came on the scene in the last couple of weeks that I think deserves some shine.
Lawn Jawns 
Creativity is something that is sorely lacking in both Hip Hop and in the "blog land". Let's face it, we all kind of do the same thing, some of us may do it better than others, but it's just a different spin on the same thing for the most part. So when something creative, different, and (excuse the played out description here, but....) fresh comes along, it'll grab my attention. That's where "Lawn Jawns" comes in.
For those of you not in the know, "The Lawn" is the forums for "The Justus League", consisting of Little Brother, The Away Team, LEGACY, Ceasar Comanche and several other like minded artists. I basically lurk, while adding my two cents in when I feel neccessary, but it actually is one of the more intellegent forums I've ran into. It's also home to some talented artists and producers. I'm not usually a big fan of 90% of the stuff I hear on the net from inspiring hip hop artists, but this place has some talented cats that frequent the site. Lex, who has already been featured on this site, is a regular on the site (although I met him through mastaaces.com first) along with Preach, an MC who I've been trying to track down to do a feature on for awhile now along with several others talented producers and MC's.
Well a group of producers from the site have came up with a very interesting concept. Once a week they will take a sample and each of them will flip it in their unique style and post it up on the blog. If I have a weakness in my Hip Hop prowness, it's sampling and the use of it, but I can still apperciate good production as well as anyone.
Week one's sample comes in the form of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "Feel the Spirit of My Guitar" and so far, 13 producers have submitted their renditions to the site for this week, all availiable to check out via either download, or the web player they have on the site (although I couldn't figure out how to work the damn thing).
As I said, I'm not the best one to judge the quality of how a producer flips a sample and all that goes into it. My short three year production career was, at most, good for a laugh or two, but there is some serious talent on this blog and should make for some very interesting competition in the coming episodes.
Last night, I sat down and ran through each producers contribution twice each and then gone through them again this morning. The only producers I was familar with going into to this was Dain & Skoolafish, the others were fairly new to me. There was a lot of variety and my opinions changed from last night. If I was handing out awards for my personal favorite it would go to Samnilla's version. I can see someone ripping lyrics on that and it had a serious head nodding factor. Other ones that caught my ear were done by AKG, Jaymojanglez, LOW, Moasic, & Skoolafish.
I think this is a very intersting concept for a blog that I hope to see catch on. It's something worth watching and maybe sometime in the future having voting to go along with, nothing like a rivarly to stir the creative juices.

I'm a sucker for blogs with well written posts. I guess it's just the internet geek in me. Anyways, Dan Love has started a well written blog with a variety of hip hop artists being highlited, it's something that I make sure I check out every day.
There are some nice tracks popping up on this site as well as of late. Well worth a daily look, I know I have.
Of course I have to give some shine to my fellow Coloradoan. This site is excellent. Where else can you get a 12inch of Spectrum City at? Machiventa has well written articles to boot to go along with his little gems he has been posting up. Pay him a visit.
DJ Illispe
I'm a little late on this, but it's worth posting up regardless. Internet DJ's are a dime a dozen usually, but two I always check for when they drop something are DJ Hyphen and DJ Illipse. Illipse comes with one point mixes and great music thats great to throw into the stereo/computer while playing some Madden or just fucking around the apartment. He has a new Mixtape that is worth copping, so make sure you pick it up and visit his myspace

Tower Records Closing....
So you're saying to yourself, "Who cares?", right? Trust me, I'm the same way. I'm very partial to the mom & pop stores and patronize any store that is independent if I can help. I even kind of giggled when I heard Tower was going out of business. Then it hit me; SALE. Hitting up music stores that are going out of business is one of the finer things in life.
At the beginning of the month, somone told me that the hip hop cd's had been discounted down to $3.00, I guess I should have went down then. Well I waited until yesterday, simply based on my own arrogance that I could pick up on all the good stuff since the simple minded, flock followers wouldn't be after the same stuff I would be after. Yeah, arrogance can be a bitch sometimes. Sure, they are down to a buck a piece now, but the store here in Denver had been thoroughly picked over. Sure, I did pick up 10 CD's, but I'm sure I missed some great deals. For those of you out there that haven't hit it up yet, you might want to check it out and pick up any spare crumbs that might have fallen through the cracks. If you live by some store out in BFE (Butt-fuck Egypt for you naive ones), you still might have a chance to score some great deals.

At first I was rather excited about running across these. I figured they'd be re-releases, since they orginal ones have been long out of print, but I was kind of pissed when I got them home and they were some cheap ass repilications without so much liner notes. Shit, I already had these on discs that I had gotten from Bust the Facts, I wanted the freaking liner notes basically. Yeah, no such luck, basically bootlegs for the most part. Whatever, I guess, they were a buck a piece. Now, if I would have paid the $17.00 these were orginally marked, I would have been heated.

Posse Cuts 101

Posse Cut. What does it mean to me? It means a group of rappers that are connected by their record label or actually make regular appearance on each other's albums. I nessecarily don't consider a bunch of guys on a song a "posse" a la "Flava In Ya Ear" remix.
Most of the songs i have hear can be found on major albums or soundtracks. Some harder to find than others. But they are songs that i love.
The first 2 selections are from the Rap-A-Lot family. They feature too many artist to name. Most of you know the Rap-A-Lot line up with the Geto Boys being the staple of the label. The label had many hidden gems showcased on these songs such as the Convicts, 2 Low DMG to name a few. There is also one more Rap-A-Lot posse cut on Odd Squad's album that I did not include here. So, if you like these joints there is one on that album too from approx. the same time period.
