BC's Top 10, 20 - 2004

Another good year, although not quite as good as '03.

BC's Top 10 LP's of 2004

10) MF DOOM - MM.. FOOD - The main reason this is #10, is the break that DOOM takes in the middle of the LP from his mic duties.

9) Murs & 9th Wonder - Murs 3:16 The 9th Edition - A real nice collaboration and the only big flaw is the short length.

8) Ghostface Killah - The Pretty Toney Album - Here’s one it took a little while for me to get into, but I finally realized how good it was. This might be my favorite Ghostface LP.

7) The Roots - The Tipping Point - I think they keep getting better and better. This LP is another in a long line of great albums from the hip-hop band and Late Night with Jimmy fallon house band. Which, by the way, I’m cool with. You can’t sell out anymore (ask Snoop and his Orbitz gum commercial and, even worse, that one he did w/ Lee Iacocca), so get some exposure and some money y’all.

6) De La Soul - The Grind Date - The great songs on this LP are really great, but there are a few mediocre tracks, which dropped it a little lower on my list.

5) R.A. the Rugged Man - Die, Rugged Man, Die - I didn’t really follow the man’s career at all, but heard good things about this LP and checked it out. I was pleasantly surprised, as this album is great all the way through. I looked up self-deprecating in the dictionary, and while I didn’t find R.A.’s picture, I did learn that, I do indeed know what the term means.

4) Beastie Boys - To the 5 Boroughs - This might be the Beasties’ must hip-hop album ever. I think it’s damn good and I can’t wait for the new one, whenever that will be, since it was delayed due to MCA’s cancer diagnosis this summer.

3) Jean Grae - This Week - Man, I dig this LP. I think there’s one song that I don’t like and Jean Grae is a phenomenally clever MC.

2) Masta Ace - A Long Hot Summer - Not quite as good as Disposable Arts, but another great one from the Masta.

1) Madvillain - Madvillainy - Another DOOM and Madlib collaboration album, but this time with DOOM and Madlib. It’s a great album from beginning to end and the best of 2004.

BC's Top 20 Songs of 2004

20) The Dum Dum - Tajai - The beat is Asian influenced and Tajai drops some sold rhymes. A nice song from a decent LP.

19) Bad Man! - Murs and 9th Wonder - This is great beat and a great MC working together.

18) Through the Wire - Kanye West - I love this beat and you have to dig that West drops his verses through a wired jaw from his car crash.

17) The Worst - Jedi Mind Tricks - This wasn’t my favorite JMT LP, but this is the best song from the album in my opinion.

16) The Grind Date - De La Soul - One of 5-6 classic songs from The Grind Date.

15) Good Ol’ Love - Masta Ace - A real nice mellow track from A Long Hot Summer.

14) 3 the Hard Way - Beastie Boys - The hook is ill and the Beasties wreck the beat. Thanks to a stint in toy merchandising, I know that Gnip Gnop is a board game and not just some jibberish from Ad-Rock. I don’t know how many times I have gotten Ad-Rock lyrics years after the song is released (another example, when The taking of the Pelham 123 remake came out, I finally knew what the reference was from Sure Shot, as I was unfamiliar with the original movie).

13) Lessons - R.A. the Rugged Man - This dope song starts off an underrated album from R.A.

12) Potholderz - MF DOOM w/ Count Bass D - Just a nice pairing of two unique MC’s.

11) 3:16 - Murs and 9th Wonder - A short, but great song that kicks off the collabo.

10) I Try - Talib Kweli w/ Mary J. Blige - I haven’t found a Kweli LP that I would consider a classic, but this song is real nice.

9) Ch-Check It Out - Beastie Boys - Some old school Beastie Boys type stuff. Just the Beasties being their goofy selves and having fun. Real cool appearance on Letterman:

8) Don’t Say Nuthin’ - The Roots - The best song you’ll hear with a jibberish chorus. Nice, I used jibberish again… and again.

7) All Good Things - Haiku d’Etat - A dope mellow song with a real nice chorus.

6) Holla - Ghostface Killah - Ghostface rapping over an old R&B song w/o removing the original vocals. Pretty cool song. I was in Cub Foods today and heard the actual song (I don’t know the original artist) and was trying to figure out why I knew the lyrics. Thank you Ghostface Killah! Oh, and 2 songs later was the song sampled and interpolated in Masta Ace’s Let’s Take a Walk. Thought that was a cool coincidence.

5) All Caps - Madvillain - My second favorite beat from the DOOM/Madlib LP.

4) Supa Luv - Jean Grae - Your typical dope 9th Wonder produced beat. I love this song.

3) H.O.O.D. - Masta Ace - MA kicking some knowledge about the ‘hood. These are the kinds of songs that Ace specializes in and the beat is nice as well.

2) Strange Ways - Madvillain - Like all the songs on Madvillainy, this song is too short, but it’s great. The beat is just amazing.

1) Rock Co. Kane Flow - De La Soul w/ MF DOOM - I think this is a Jake One beat and it’s crazy. Mix Pos and dave with DOOM, and you have a winner.

Honorable Mentions:

He Comes - De La Soul w/ Ghostface Killah
The Writz - Gift of Gab -
A crazy piano based track with Gab matching his flow with the beat.
It’s Nothing - The Beatnuts - I was listening to Milk Me again recently and I liked it better than I remembered. This song features one of those crazy Beatnut beats and some “I’ll kick your ass” lyrics.
Spoiled Rotten - J-Zone w/ Celph Titled - J-Zone comes with another great beat. I always liked these 2 paired up together, although I didn’t really get into Bo$$ Hog Barbarian$.
A-Alikes - Jean Grae - Jean Grae comes hard on the first track off of This Week.
Ain’t Changed - Truth Enola - There were a few good tracks from this LP and this was one of the best.
Crazy - Truth Enola - This song survives a lame reggae dude kicking a bar or 2 in the middle of the song.
Oh My God - Masta Ace w/ The Beatnuts and Rahzel
Biscuits - Ghostface Killah w/ Trife
Brawl - R.A. the Rugged Man -
The Rugged Man spittin’ over some crazy xelophone loop.
One Beer - MF DOOM

A day with the Master

So on Monday Masta Ace and Edo.G came to the town where I study, Kiel. I've seen Ace for the seventh time, each time it's different, but this time it was really special!

I arrived in Kiel on Sunday,I drove 2 1/2 hours with my brother, since I don't really live in Kiel anymore, I just go there to write my exams (but pssssst). So that night there was supposed to be a Ustream of Ace and Edo from Birmingham, England. Right on time at 9pm my time they were sitting in front of the laptop ready to stream. During the chat i mentioned that I'm watching football, and they asked how I can do that in Germany. I got Digital TV with ESPN America, so I can watch all the NFL games. Ace and Ed got all excited, since they are huge football fans and they knew they would come to Kiel the next day. They said they might wanna watch Monday Night Football over at my crib. The stream continued for over an hour, whoever wants to watch it, you can check it here (It was really cool):

The same night I emailed Ace if they really wanted to come to the crib to watch the game, and he was like: DEFINITELY. So the next day I went grocery shopping and got some beer and coke (cola, lol). I was preparing a lasagna and some chicken curry for the night. I also got the word 2 days ago, that Strick would come too, he will be the Merch Guy this tour. Akrobatik and Paten Locke were also announced for the show.

My boys Esperado and Matt Sense also had their first big performance with 12 Finger Dan as the local act, they had a couple beats from me too, and they ripped it, they did a great job. Matt picked me up around 4 and we went over to Epserado to do a last little rehearsal (I had to kick a verse too). We went to the Luna Club around 6 to do the sound check. Ace, Edo, Ak, P, Strick and DJ Moe-D arrived around 7. It was a very warm welcome and Ace told me that they would premiere the joint I did for their album. I didn't even get to hear it before that day, so I was really excited about it. I heard it during the sound check and it sounded crazy.
Anyway, my boys got on stage around 9.30 and did a great show, Ak and Paten went on afterwards and ripped it too. Ace and Edo got on stage around 11. They did ALL the classic joint like - I got to have it, The Symphony, Love comes and goes, Born 2 roll (with the 3rd verse over the Ante Up beat) Good ol love, Beautiful, Rock the beat and a lot more, they also played a lot of the songs off the new album. The people went totally crazy and since it was a prettysmall club and it was packed, it had a really great feel to it.
So they left the stage for a short moment to come back for an Encore, it started with Take a walk, by Ace and then there was my moment, I don't wanna tell y'all too much, besides that it was a world premiere, just check the video right here: (The Sound quality is really good)

So after the show I jumped in the tour van and we went to the hotel for a quick second, before we got over to my brothers (my former) crib. My brother and a couple friends were already there, and since the living room is pretty small, it was PACKED!
Ace was really classic, while watching football he was drinking tea and Henny, lol. We talked about a lot of things, but I can't tell y'all everything, I just say it reached from music to plastic surgery... Ak and Edo were a little pissed that the Pats were getting their ass beat tho. Akrobatik was ustreaming live from the appartment, making bets when Ace would fall asleep, but Ace stayed awake doing some, what Ak called "Pre-Game-Routines". I also finished the lasagna and cooked the rice to go with the chicken curry, and everybody was really happy about getting something to eat late at night, don't need to tell y'all that I'm a hobby chef, just ask these dudes, lol. I brought em back to the hotel around 6 am, they had to leave for Oslo, Norway around 7, so you can be pretty sure they didn't catch any sleep... But that's how it is if you do what you love.

All of these MC's are great people and I felt really fotunate to spend a whole night with em. See y'all next year!

Clap

Edit: Ace gave me an A&E shirt plus... one of the CD'S that were already pressed up, with the A&E logo on it and in a digi pack, which is way cooler than the jewel case. I will leave that motherfucker sealed! This version can never be sold and I'm really fortunate to have one, HA!

Game Over

Back in 2000, I had just graduated from college and I was in this weird transitional phase with the music I was listening to. At this time hip-hop was all over the place, but I wasn't really digging a lot of it (really starting around 1997 or so). Then I discovered independent hip-hop and I was reminded of why I liked hip-hop music to begin with.

At this time, I was snatching up anything I could find online from Masta Ace, who was, and had been, putting out a bunch of 12 inches. For the first time in my life, I had regular access to the internet, which I used to find out about a lot of releases that I had no idea about, since I was relegated to what I saw at Media Play or Best Buy.

I don't remember how I found out about this LP, but basically, I saw that Ace was on this and I bought it. The concept is pretty cool. The search for the Yosumi game system (named after the label) and many of the beats use old video game samples. The best examples of this are in Super Brooklyn and Punch Out, which use Super Mario Bros. and Punch Out samples in the songs featuring the Cocoa Brovas (aka Smif N' Wessun). There's a mix of artists that you've heard of and a few that you've never heard of, or at least I haven't heard of since. This LP also features the song Hellbound with Eminem and Ace, which was apparently a song that took a few verses that were lying around and put them together. Either way, it's a nice song. Also, on here is Spread It Out, featuring Masta Ace over a sample of The Simpsons theme song.

For a while, Yosumi had a web site and listed Ace and Deacon the Villain from CunninLynguists as artists. They released a second Game Over compilation, and I believe they at least handled something to do with Ace's Disposable Arts. Other than that, I'm not too familiar with what happened. I found a MySpace page and it looks like they release break beats.

1) Intro
2) Super Brokklyn (BQ Mix) - Cocoa Brovas & Mr. Cheeks
3) Que, Que - Tomorrow's Weapons
4) Roll Wit Me - GHG
5) U R Who?
6) Who R U? - Illa Noize (J-Getm)
7) Splain to Him
8) Creep - Royal Flush, J-Mel, 151-Ron Bacardi, Rah Bump
9) Chica Bonita - JNJ Project
10) Jugga In Sink
11) Hellbound (H&H remix) - Eminem, J-Black and Masta Ace
12) Mamita - S.U.
13) Puff Harder - JNJ Project and Mista Cheeks
14) Newscast
15) Spread It Out - Masta Ace
16) 4-Tivity
17) Petrified - Dhark Citi
18) Smokin Trees - Groovy
19) Think Like Street - Godfather, Royal Flush and Rah Fese
20) You Can't Take Me Out - Cocoa Brovas
21) Rumble
22) Punch Out - Cocoa Brovas, Xun Tsu and The Most Talented
23) Yun Yin
24) Game Over - J-Black, Jugga, Steele, Godfather and P Dap
25) Wrap It Up
26) Super Brooklyn - Cocoa Brovas

A & E - Arts & Entertainment

For my taste, 2009 has been an incredible good year for Hip Hop. We have new dudes like Fashawn, Kid Cudi and Wale coming up as the next generation, who all released hot albums, we got some of the Heavyweights like Eminem, Jay-Z and Raekwon who released great albums, some hot ungderground albums like Double Barrel or the Superstar Quamallah album „The Invisible Man“ and we also had huge disappointments, like that Busta Rhymes album, which was really close to garbage. I know a lot of y'all won't agree on these classifications, but that's the way i see it.

An album that doesn't really fit into any of these categories is „Arts & Entertainment“ by Masta Ace & Edo.G. Two legends who are making music for 20 years, uniting to record an album. Of course the expectations have been incredibly high. The first thing I gotta say about the album is, that I love the mixdown. The quality is great, sounds better than Blueprint 3. Filthy Rich and Ace were doing an incredible job on that. Not everybody has an album with a huge sound like that (wink wink Cormega).
The album is a concept album, as usual. It's set up like a TV night and The Bundies, the latest signing of Ace's m3 label, are playing the couple that's guiding you through the album, in a really hilarious way. The Album starts off with a hypnotizing beat by M-Phazes for the track „Hands Up High“. Sounds more like an Edo joint than an Ace joint, sound wise. It's almost Dr. Dre like. Definitely catchy, just like the hook, it's a goodtrack for live shows. The raps are typical battle raps... „Your girl lips cute play the medley on the flute“ (Ace) All in all a really good one! Number 2 features Large Pro and is called „Fans“. Ace starts off and raps like he's talking about his wife, when in fact he's talking about the fans. Large Pro sounds great on this beat and is the perfect feature guest, Edo is coming correct too. Another good one.
The next joint is called „A's & E's“ and it's the first concept song of the album. Ace mostley uses words that start with A and Edo uses words starting with E. HOT! Marsha Ambrosius is on the hook, which sounds a little weird, but in a good way, fits the song perfectly! The melody of the song is really simple, the drums make the track. They sound sick! Next up, the single „Little Young“. I'm sure everybody has heard it, seen the incredible video and loved it. The song has been on BET 106 and Park last week, I think that's a great thing, hope some of these kids listened close!

„Reminds Me“ might be my favorite track of the album, it's Ace's solo joint, Edo is just doing the hook. I love the vibe of the song, a really soulful, relaxed beat and Ace is spitting 2 of his verses that we love him for: „Play this on your jukebox in your bar rooms, who the best who the worst all this arguin won't matter when the smoke clears, Hip Hop's not dead, there's a little hope here...“ Gotta love this!
After this, there is another relaxed joint called „Good Music“ which features Pos of De La Soul. Another favorite. The DJ Spinna beat gives the 3 MC's a lot of room to flow and deliver their message. The hook is very simple but absolutely perfect, Pos is definitely the right feature for a beat like this, and he told me that this is an absolutely great record. Everything fits.
Next up is one I like the least off the album. I don't like the Double-O beat and KRS is coming with lines like „most of y'all pussy, the rest of y'all dickheads“. That is definitely not what you wanna hear from somebody who's always preaching about the temple of Hip Hop...
But the next track saves it. It's Edo's solo joint called “Over There“. Another M-Phazes production, this dude is killing it right now. Not much to say about it, great one. Following is another joint about touring which features DOITALL from the Lords of the Underground. Sounds like someone used the „Juicy Fruit“ drums on here. Solid track, really good one again.
Next up is the grimey peak of the album. This one needs no Hook, „Ei8ght is enuff“, Ace and Ed spit 8 bars back and forth, some really mean lines the beat makes you put on your ugly face. From what I read all over the net this is one of the fan favorites on the album.

Track 11 is called „Here I go“. It has a really nice piano beat and Edo starts talking about his history in the game, Ace is becoming a little more personal with some personal fears that you face when you are an artist. 3rd verse is done by Jamelle Bundy, she's one half of the Bundies and an incredible singer. She doesa great job.
Last track on the album is called „Dancing like a white girl“ and it features the rock group Chester French and Pav Bundy. I read that people really had mixed feeling about it. Some say this sounds like a lame effort to sound commercial, the others say they love it cause it's so funny. You gotta look at the track as for what it is. There's a reason they put it in the end. It doesn't really fit the rest of the tracks, Ace & Edo knew that, but they wanted to do something different and funny. Now somebody tell me that this ain't hilarious. On tour, they often talk to the people and dance with em afterwards. So imagine em chilling after the show in Europe and some white girls dancing with em completely off rhythm, trying to impress them, you need to make a track about this. And they did. After all this is just a great production, the beat is hot, the Lyrics are funny, so don't complain you fockers...

On this example you can see what's wrong with Hip Hop today. It's like half of the fans are complaining that shit changed and doesn't sound like the early 90's and the other half is complaining that everybody is stuck on the golden age sound. Ace & Edo just did a really entertaining album, it is versatile, it is produced really well, maybe there could have been 3 more tracks on it but overall it's just good music, simple and plain... Everybody who said they didn't like it should give it a chance to grow on them.

Everybody make sure to visit for some exclusive videos, the attempt to reuinite the Juice Crew is super interesting!

Masta Ace - Singles

In honor of the release of Ace & Edo's Arts & Entertainment, I decided to post a couple maxi-singles from Masta Ace. I only wish that a couple of the maxi-cassettes that I have were CDs, because I have a couple more from the Slaughtahouse days that I was only able to find on tape.

Sittin' On Chrome

Download Here

The vocal version is the album version, which is a great song. The Pitkin Ave Mix is a more mellow mix and features a variation on the "they ain't got no valet" with "I thought you lived in Cali". The Rockaway Ave Mix is also more mellow than the original version and both remixes are nice to have, especially if you're an Ace fan.

You can get both Maintain and Ya' Hardcore on the Hits U Missed discs out there, but for a while at least, I had them and you couldn't download them off the internet, which was still pretty young at the time.

On Ya' hardcore, the first 2-3 times I heard it, I didn't think it was Ace. He comes on a different style and slightly deeper voice. Basically, it's a track that seems to be from the perspective of a fan, or someone other than Ace, as he talks about listening to hardcore rap, or gangsta rap. One reason, out of many, that I liked Ace is that he wasn't someone that catered to what was popular at the time. He spoke about not smoking weed (although, wasn't preachy in doing so) and not having a gun. Well, this track is from that outside perspective, as I said, and involves the character taking a trip to Albee Square Mall to shoot the place up. It's a different kind of song from MA, but a solid one with a message.

Maintain features Lord Digga and is another good track. It's pretty mellow and it starts off a little weird, but then gets better. It's about the pressures of life and maintaining in the face of that pressure, hence the title.

The remainder has a couple of instrumentals so you can kick your own shit over an Ace beat.

1) Vocal
2) Pitkin Ave Mix
3) Rockaway Ave Mix
4) Ya' Hardcore (Trip 2 Albee Sq.)
5) Maintain
6) Sittin' On Chrome (Instrumental)
7) Rockaway Ave Mix inst.

Runaways feat. Masta Ace - Express Delivery

Download Here

I really don't know anything about the Runaways, other than they seem to be from London. I had never even heard of this and it looks like it came out in 1999. I was looking for used CD's at Cheapo's and decided and look for some Ace stuff just to see if there was anything. there wasn't anything used, but I found this sitting there and snatched it up.

MA pretty much disses those that talk about being thugs, chains, wack MC's, etc. I really like all the mixes, but the weakest to me is the Flightcrank mix, which is a bit of a rock infused track. It's okay, but not as good as the rest. My favorite mix might be the one from The Next Men, but they're all pretty dope.

After not even knowing that this even existed, I was pumped when I found it, and I was even happier when it turned out to be damn good.

There are a couple instrumentals and an acappella as well.

1) Original mix
2) Instrumental
3) Remix by Aquasky and DJ Format
4) Remix by The Next Men
5) Remix by Flightcrank
6) Flightcrank Instrumental
7) Acappella

This gave me an idea to post some more of these in the future. So, I'll be getting some of my other maxi-single stuff up here at some point.

WYDU Presents The Guest of Honor: Slug & Masta Ace

By now, you've met two or the three new people we have here on WYDU. Owen (O-Snap) is helping with some behind the scenes things and tossing up some posts. He posted the PDA post on Friday along with the Souls of Mischief post. Then my man BC, who I've been cool with for awhile now and is part of the MA.com fam (masta ace) that is basically the main reason for the exsistence of this blog to begin with. BC is an old school head that is sure to bring back some of that old school loving which we always need more of. You'll meet Sean here this week hopefully. They are the dudes helping me while I try to scale back a bit more and enjoy life, while also trying to move the blog forward some more. So drop a line and welcome them aboard if you have the chance....

I stayed home last week sick with the flu (yes, it was the swine flu, at least I don't have to worry about it again), and got a little bored. When I get bored, I do a few things; of course there is Madden, but I can only play so long. I can write, which I did some of, mostly some interview questions and transcribing a couple that I've been meaning to do for waaaaay too long. I also tagged some mp3s and keep plugging away on the seemingly never ending task of cataloging my music collection. But after all that, I still make "mixtapes", or I guess they would be classified as "playlists" these days, since it'll probably never see a tape or a CD for that matter, but it'll be on the iPod.

What did I come up with you ask? Actually, I started this little project strictly for myself and my personal enjoyment with no intention of ever putting it up on WYDU. I also started the original one earlier in the year, when one of my favorite artists, Slug of Atmosphere, was starting to pop up as a guest artist on several projects this year. I hadn't added any tracks to the five or six I had in there already and decided I needed to catch up with his recent guest appearances. But before I had the chance to do that, I started throwing some Masta Ace guest shots in a folder as well. We all know that I'm a virtual Ace "stan", and he has been popping up on several projects the past couple years. I started tossing tracks in folder and decided I'd go back to the year 2007 and realized Ace has had his share of guest appearances the past couple years. Once I got all the tracks that I could recall and find, I had a rather nice collection of Ace tracks. I then did the same for Slug, from the year 2007 until present. Being the sharing guy that I am, I thought if I liked this and wanted this kind of thing, surely two or three of you out there would enjoy this as well. And "BOOM", here we are.

Ace & Edo G: Bad News

We got some bad news on the Ace & Edo G front tonight. I'm cool with Ace's cousin, C.C. who runs his site and also did the website (www.aetheduo.com) and she sent me a text to be on the look out for a video which Ace announces that the brass at the cable TV channel, A&E didn't take too kindly to the logo, the name or the promo trailers they had ready to go spoofing A&E shows. Needless to say, this kind of throws a wrench into the cog that Ace and Ed had going rather strong lately. It's going to push the release date back obviously, but here is Ace talking about it..... But be sure to BUY the album when it does drop, cause it's seriously a dope album.

A&E - The First 48

By now you know, or at least you should know, that Masta Ace and Edo G have teamed up to make a collaborative album. Going as A&E, they are dropping "Arts & Entertainment" on 10-6-09. I was fortunate to hear the album this weekend (don't ask me to link it, cause I won't) and I don't think it will disappoint the Masta Ace or Edo G fans out there. I need to listen to it a little more to get my bearings on it, but it should be another feather in the cap for the legacy of both artists.

For Homicide detectives, the clock starts ticking immediately. Partnering up for their collaborative LP as the duo "A&E" Masta Ace and EDO. G come up with their own trailer for one of Cable TV's top shows "First 48" on the A&E Network (get it "A&E").

See if Ace and EDO are successful at cracking the case?

Don't forget, Masta Ace and EDO. G's collaborative LP, Arts & Entertainment, is in stores on 10-6-09

I've known about this little group project for quite awhile and I'm sure we've mentioned it a time or two on the site already. Where's The Book, Dammit?!?!

I'm wrapping up "Raising Hell: The Rise, The Ruin and The Redemption of Run DMC", by Ronin Ro. It's not the greatest book of all time, but it's been extremely entertaining. I credit Run DMC with getting me into hip hop to begin with, and probably the single most important group in the genre's history, so to read an in depth book on them has been interesting to say the least.

On my nearly hour commute this morning, it got me thinking, and not just about about how many hours left until the upcoming three day weekend neither. I was thinking what groups/artists would I want to read a "no-holds barred" biography on. It would have to be entertaining, have to be some juicy back stories, and some dissension and conflict are always entertaining sub-plots to have.

In the end, I came up with these five as my most wanted to read bio's.....

The Pharcyde

If you are going to write a book on an artist or group, the subject matter has to be fairly interesting, which means you need conflict, deception, and angst. Let's face it, the history of the Pharcyde contains all of that. From starting off as dancers and pop lockers, the story that I've read about them dancing in an after school boys club and how they came together, always sounded mad interesting. Then of course, you have the near infamous stories that you occasionally catch from the Pharcyde manor day, in which you had every hanger on sleeping on the couches, while the four member crew was usually high as hell. Everything was all happy go-lucky during the Bizarre Ride days, but it's also been documented that things went south fairly quick with rumors of drug abuse by both J-Swift (the fifth Pharcyde member) and Fatlip. There is a reason for the change in tone between the first album and the second album. What was it? Inquiring minds need to know

The stuff that has been heard about how the group handled the whole Fatlip episode would be great reading material after Labcabin.. was released. I'm sure there is a shitload of "behind the scenes" stories to come out of that whole incident. Including an incident with him and Imani at a Blaze Battle at the House of Blues back toward the late 90's. Slim Kid Tre was the next to bolt, and again, cats felt jaded by it.

I'd read their biography, not only because they are one of my all-time favorite groups, but their story sounds like a great read. I have it from my behind the scenes contacts, that their is currently a....I won't even call this cat a blogger, because he's so much better than a "blogger", but a writer that is well known on the internets that is looking into doing their biography. Let's hope that goes through.

Masta Ace

I know Ace has been talking about doing his biography for the past few years now, and hopefully he has the chance to follow through on it. Ace's story is interesting in many aspects. He didn't get his start until AFTER he graduated from college. He won the opprotunity to record with Marley through a contest, way back in the day. That's the makings for a good book just right there. But it doesn't stop there, the split from Cold Chillin' is something that hasn't been covered all that much. I'm sure it's like most of the other artist splitting from Cold Chillin', which has a reputation for being somewhat shady.

The Inc. was a close knit bunch at one time. Both of Ace's Inc. albums portrayed a group of individuals that had Ace's back, then all of a sudden, things went south. There were rumors of some deceit going on behind the ranks with Ace and Digga. Not sure where that put Paula Perry in the whole mess. I'm not sure how many people now the story behind Ace and Leschea, but let's just say there is your romantic tale for the book.

After the Inc failed, Ace got signed to Big Beat, in a deal that failed miserably. Again, great material for those not in the know, and there isn't many in the know. I don't know much about that deal, and I'm a self professed Ace stan. Of course, Ace probably hasn't the greatest "comeback" in hip hop history, with coming back with the Disposable Arts and A Long Hot Summer releases and even the eMC album is worth reading about.

Hopefully this gets done as well. Ace is an interesting character that has been through a lot. You'd have Juice Crew history all the way to still being relevant in the 21st century. Not many can claim that.

Eazy-E/N.W.A.

I have to believe this will happen sooner rather than later. Yes, there has been plenty written on the subject already. Most of us that have any interest in the subject have read most of the material that has been dropped on the subject. Several books that deal with Dre's history (Have Gun, Will Travel and others) and his role in NWA, but it'd be nice to hear from Ren and Yella about the subject. Even Cube hasn't really dropped a lot of knowledge via books on the subject. It'd be nice to read some of the more insider knowledge from the various cats that were around during the time. I'd love to know more about that NWA & The Posse album that dropped before NWA beginning their gangsta rap rule. I'd like to hear about some of the obscure groups and artists that appear on it.

Eazy is already lost, a full fledged written history about one of the more important groups in hip hop history (both positively and negatively) needs to be done, and like yesterday.

KRS-One/Boogie Down Productions

From homelessness to being one of the top three MCs our generation has ever seen? Tell me that's not some straight up book/movie shit right there! Again, a lot has this topic has been covered already and KRS isn't shy to talk about it, but it'd be great to have him get really in depth with it. I'm sure more light can be shed on who Scott LaRock was. Yes, I've read a bunch of stuff printed about him, but I'm sure there is more.

Those years, '84-'86 are just real interesting time for hip hop in general. Then to top it off, you have one of the greatest battles in hip hop history, with the Bridge Wars. To have that time period thoroughly documented would only be a blessing for future generations in this genre. There is also those days of kicking it in the legendary hip hop hot spots, such as the Roxy, Danceteria, Latin Quarters and others that I could read about all day if I had to.

Kris' career spans over three decades (soon to be four, doesn't look like he is slowing down), the things dude has seen, is probably not rivaled by very many other MCs out there. Of course, you'd probably want someone else writing this, KRS doing it, it might be a little to far out there. Other than that, the dude is walking treasure trove of knowledge, no matter what you think of him as a person or as an artist, it would be great to tap that mind and drain the knowledge.

EPMD

Just the taste you got from their chapter in Brian Coleman's "Check The Technique" book, was more than I had ever read on the pair from Long Island. They have an interesting story on how they came together and started making records. I'm sure it could have been even more in depth than what was covered in Coleman's book (which is a great read none the less and should be read by anyone that considers themselves a hip hop head). They done the tours with the likes of LL Cool J, Public Enemy, NWA, Run DMC, they've seen the road in their early years and they saw great success for a hip hop group back then.

Of course all that took a dive, when one of the more bizarre stories in hip hop history took place. At the root of most hip hop beefs, money. But you usually don't hire thugs to go rob your own partner. That's supposedly what happened between Erick and Parrish, with E (allegedly) sending some goons to collect. The crazy thing was Parrish still stuck around AFTER this all went down to finish the tour. How would it be to be a fly on the wall on some of those backstage after shows parties?

The story is still going strong. Reading about how they brought it back together would be interesting, although they have never had the same chemistry that they had before. Get this done, like yesterday.

5x5 Day Five: Trav's Favorite Songs with "Love" In The Title and Five Sex Songs (Bonus)

Ahhh love, that word "love", is a very serious thing.... KRS-One

Unless you see it on WYDU, then you can probably guess that there is nothing serious about the word love. I'm really, do you think I was going to get all mushy on a Friday? Fuuuuuuck that! I was cruising through some songs, and noticed the word "love" is often seen. Now, some of the songs has some love overtones to them, kinda....but they are just what the long ass title up there says they are. They contain the world "love" in the title. Nothing crazy, just what it says it is....

1. Common - I Used to Love H.E.R.

The ultimate "love" song. What can I say about this song that hasn't been said already? It is a "love song" in the sense, but you know the story.

2. Boogie Down Productions - Love's Gonna Getcha

One of my top 5 all-time favorite BDP songs. And that statement ain't no joke, love will get your ass if your not careful

3. Masta Ace - Good Ol' Love

A-to the-C-E drops another classic "love" banger. 9th Wonder did his thing on this track as Ace just runs wild with it. It's kind of a touching song on the reminiscent level.

4. I-n-I - Don't You Love It

I can remember picking this album up in Vegas at the old HipHopSite.com store while I was there with my girlfriend, way back in 2002. I loooooved this track and kept playing it over and over in the hotel room. The girlfriend finally came to like it herself after hearing it 25 times plus that weekend.

5. (Tie) Blue Scholars - Still Got Love & Blu & Exile - No Greater Love

I had to go with a couple newer joints, the new "classics" so to speak. I have a feeling when I look back ten years in the future, I will look at these two joints as classics of the age. Both tracks do the word "love" justice.

5x5 Day One: DJ SoulClap's Top Five Masta Ace Songs

My man DJ SoulClap might be an even bigger Masta Ace stan than myself. Therefore, we'll toss up Clap's favorite Masta Ace tracks of all time. Props to Clap. And you should really have all of these, so no mp3's....

Top 5
Masta Ace joints

1. Beautiful

I think i already told it a couple of times. This is my favorite joint of all time. It combines that old with the new sounds and it's just different than anything else. I went crazy when I heard it the first time. And I'm still doing when I listen today. CLASSIC!

2. Terror
I remember when I got that record and listened to it the first time (Sittin on chrome). I had the cover in my hands and read it: Terror. I thought it sounds like a hard ass track. Then the drums came in, with the overdubs by Lord Digga. I was just like, aww yeah, this shit is hard! and then the smooth melody came in Which totally fits in an inappropriate way. Ace was rhyming dope as usual, catchy lyrics

3. No Regrets
Best song to ever end an album, period!

4. Splash
From a 12" he did with J-Love. I can't even tell why i like it so
much, I just do!

5. Postin High
Nice sample, super smooth. Ace on his first album, young, gifted and dope!
