The Soul Occs - Swing Through

People have been asking over and over again when the album will be coming... Due to personal reasons I didn't have any time within the last year to mix the album or even get it mixed, but now that the exams are over I will work on it. It's the first time in 1 1/2 years that I actually have some free time.

I'm giving away the summer hit from the album called "Swing Through". It has a happy, soulful BBQ vibe, and I'm sure y'all will dig it.

http://sharebee.com/9680fbde

I'm sorry for not posting that much within the last months. I will also care about that in the next weeks. I'm working on some topics that go more deeply into the music and culture, and also some off-topic posts. We need to get some more discussions going on here! I hope everyone has been well! You know I love y'all!

Peace, Clap

Top 10 Spins

It's time again for one of my bi monthly hip hop charts return. I'm really trying to keep with all the music dropping lately. I can't say hip hop is as good as it used to be, but there is a lot of "good" music out there, more than I can my tabs on. While there is a lot of "good" music out there, I've been stuck in some of my favorite albums of late. Sometimes I get stuck on certain albums, just because I don't feel like trying to digest something new. Ahhh the life of a hip hop head.....

Tracks

10. (TIE) Abdominal - Pedal Pusher & Father Jah - 5 Fingers

Abdominal comes to me from my T.Dot connections. I remember this album from last year, but I'm not sure if I ever listened to it or not. I suppose I should pull it out and see if the rest of the album is good as this track. The subject matter is not your traditional hip hop fare, but it sounds good. The beat is done by Ugly Duckling's Einstein, wh
o I've always been a fan of.

Father Jah is one of those multi dimensional cats from the south. His music c
ontains a little bit of everything, from the dirty south style, to straight up battle rap, to an almost NC sound. While I'm not as crazy about him as my man A-One, I do think the cat has extreme talent, although he might not always be my thing. This song, "5 Fingers" is my type of thing. Jah does his thing lyrically, as he flows along with a hard edged track that has a great electric guitar sample.

Father Jah

Abdominal

9. Rashid Hadee & Analogic - Explode

I've grown pretty tired of the whole "soul" sample movement, just because e
veryone and their dog is doing it. There are still some good "soul" productions out there, and this happens to be one of them. Rashid Hadee is one of those cats I keep waiting for to "blow up" on the underground scene, but just hasn't gotten over that hump as of yet. Analogic is a producer that keeps gettting his name out there and sounds good everytime I've heard one of his beats. This track is just a great combination of both artists strengths.

Rashid Hadee

Analogic

8. Yameen feat Maylay Sparks - The Atmosphere

My man Stinke aka Yameen has dropped an album that I would totally expect not too like, yet I've given it more than just a few spins this past week. I guess my older age has expanded my musical tastes a little more. With Maylay Sparks on the mic, it was the song t
hat grabbed my attention before even listening to it. Maylay was down with Ill Advised back in the day, a group that I'm always on the look out for more music. This is something different, and that's something I've been bitching about a lot lately, nothing is "different". This is "different".

Yameen

7. Soul Occs feat Punchline - Dedicated to the B's

WYDU's on SoulClap graces the countdown with his rhyming partner, T
ony Tigerstyle and special guest, Punchline on "Dedicated to the B's". I ain't going to lie, I begged Clap for an mp3 of this track when I first heard it a couple months ago. Clap is at his best here and Tony does his thing as well. Very smooth track, that should be in the top 100 at the end of the year. If this didn't make the album, then I can't wait to see what did.

Soul Occs

6. Freddie Joachim feat Aloe Blacc - 24 Hours

My man Names from Brews Rhymes With Crews put me on to this cat, and it's a good thing. I have to admit, this particular song sounds more like an Aloe Blacc track from his last album than anything else. That is alright by me, since I've always dug Aloe Blacc solo or as part of Emanon. Good track for those are into the light, mellow sounds of "adult contemporary" hip hop.

Freddie Joachim

5. Basic Weaponary - Lockem In

Basic Weaponary is my man Weapon X and his partner Basic. I'm a sucka for son
gs with angelic strings, and that's exactly what this song has. They are crazy. The track actually reminds me a lot of something you'd hear from Jedi Mind Tricks, with that gruff tone and flow. They both hold their own on the mic, thankfully, but the beat is the highlight for me, and that's not taking anything away from Weapon X and Basic.

Weapon X

4. Has-Lo & Small Professor - Molotov Cocktails

Has & Small Pro might as well become official spokesmen for this blog, or they should just hire me for their promotion team. I'm sure you'll see more from both of these Philly cats in the very near future on WYDU. I'm not thru trying to convince my readers that both of these cats deserve the their valuable iPod space. Small Pro turns what was probably my least favorite from the original conception of "Fuck Has Day" and turns it into my favorite track found on the "Remixed But Still Fucked" version. Stay tuned, more to come from these two.

Has-Lo
Small Professor

3. eMC - Leak it Out

I'm still playing this album almost four months after it was released in retail, and five months after the "leak". I guess this album is just that good, or this year is that boring, or maybe a little of both, but my plays resurged after they released "Leak It Out" as a single. It was already one of my favorite tracks from The Show, but with a video, it made it come back some. Now if I could just figure out who the EXTREMELY hot chick is on their myspace default photo, I could die a happy man.

eMC

2. ST - Miss Beautiful

Myspace is good for something after all. Last week a group from Alabama of all places requested me as a friend. I don't really turn anyone down, because really, why is that big of a deal? But I check their music just to see what it's like. When I went to ST's (pronounced Esss Teee), Miss Beautiful was the track playing and it immediately grabbed my attention. So much so, I went and bought the track off of their snocap store....and I don't do that if it isn't the Smile Rays or K-Def. I'm not going to say this is on some "next shit", cause it's not. It's just good music and I'm a-ok with that.

ST

1. Hip Hop - Mr. Green & Pacewon

I was a HUGE Outsidaz fan back in the day, with Young Zee and Pacewon being my two favorite members. I've enjoyed Pace's solo material, although besides a couple 12 inches, not a lot of it made much noise. I'm hoping that changes with the release of his colabo album with Mr. Green. Yes, we've probably had our fair share of "hip hop" is great and reminiscing type of songs, but if it's good, it's good and this is....well, it's great.

Dedicated to The B's feat. Punch

Whattup people.
Today I'm coming with a special gift!

We (The Soul Occs) finsihed recording our album yesterday! I know everybody is saying that about his alb um, but it really is something special. You might have heard some of my stuff, but that was nothing compared to, what will be on the album. I just can't say more right now.
A song that won't be on the album in that way, is "Dedicated to the B's" featuring the one and only Punchline.
We give it away as a free download, this will be the only way you can get it!

I know everybody got some people in his life, that are always complaining or that always got a bad attitude and act like a B! This is a song for all of you. If you're mad at someone, just listen to it, sing along, rap along or just listen to it because it's good music!
I hope y'all enjoy it!

The Soul Occs, Live with eMC

On may 26th, we had our first show together. The legendary first Soul Occs show. We had some technical difficulties in the beginning cause our Torq system wasn't working right, then it didn't work at all. Good that I had a backup, I brought some blank cd's and the guy at the show had a cd turntable, which disgusted me a little, but it was cool. Better than nothing.
I started putting on some records before the show started, a little Rakim, some Pitch Black, Slum Village, De La, Common etc... some people already started dancing, which usually doesn't happen before the show, so that was cool. The people were coming in slowly... when there was a decent amount of people, we started. I just had a record on the table when Tony started talking, he was still backstage, upstairs, but he had a wireless mic... The people started to scream... he was talking for a while before he came down. Then we started with our Intro, you oldschool heads will know the track, haha...

We continued with our MT Hip Hop Open joint, a joint we did for a contest where we could be on stage in front of 13000 people, a banger where Tony explains why we should be on that show... After that we really started with the first joint from our album called The Raw, just the first erse though, you could tell that the people were feeling it.

Next on the menu was a joint most of y'all already know, Up again, with Souleez who came from Berlin to join us at the show!

We continued with Umm Umm Umm and another new album joint called "The Hate That Made me" that I just put on our Soul Occs myspace as a preview. The Chappelle fans will love it, you can bet on that! http://www.myspace.com/souloccs

Next up we did some of our mixtape stuff. Y'all know on the Perverted Monks "Desperados" beat and "Where's your money" plus 2 freestyles.

After that we started with our Summer banger called "Swing through"

Then Souleez came back on stage to perform "When I'm gone" before we ended the show with "Most Real"
I will post some other videos from our 2nd show later so it's not too much for you to watch at once.

After us Marco Polo and Torae rocked the crowd and of course eMC as usual. I had a special Hip Hop moment too when I was standing in the 2nd row during the eMC show and Words was doing one of his famous freestyles and he mentioned me, too bad nobody caught it on camera, I can't even remember what he said... but the people went crazy when he said my name... of course it was a home game for us, but I was overwhelmed by the props we got. Strick was standing by the stage and watched almost our whole show, we got mad props from Torae and Marco too.
I was spinning at the aftershow party and eMC and the crew were dancing and partying with us till the end... A great night that I will never forget!

I hope you enjoyed the videos.

Peace

New Artist Spotlight: The Soul Occs Baby!!

You know what it's all about, I gotta look out for my homies. In all honesty though, that ain't what this New Artist Spotlight is all about. True, I've had contact with SoulClap for over four years now, but I'm not doing this as any kind of "favor". I'm doing this because with his MCing partner, Tony Tigerstyle, the form the Soul Occs and they are putting out some incredible music. SoulClap and I met while frequenting the Mastaace boards back in late 2003/early 2004. We both had a common tastes in hip hop music and while he was a younger cat, he was already up on his history and that he didn't know, he was eager to learn. It wouldn't be long after that Clap would take up making beats. I won't say the Clapster was horrible at first, far from it, but truth is that Clap has improved in LEAPS and BOUNDS. You can feel the love in the music he makes. Truth is, I'm often somewhat hard on Clap. He asks for my opinion on a beat and I give him an honest answer. If I'm not feeling, I'll straight up tell him, I'm not feeling it. Hopefully he respects the honesty, because I don't think it does him any good by hyping everything up. If I am feeling it, I'll pump it up as well. I kind of take him for granted, because to me, he is "SoulClap", fellow WYDU contributor and mastaace.com confidant.

Clap would get his hustle on and a year or so later after he started making beats. He would send me a track with this cat from L.A. rhyming on one of his beats. It struck me as, "dayum, this dude is pretty nice", soon, the Soul Occupants would be born. It's been great watching Clap and Tony progress and morph into a group that has the talent to really make some noise. Currently, the two are holed up in Germany, working on an album. I truly hope the take full advantage of this, because this is the type shit dreams are made of. Fucking around and making music. And hopefully, it's just the beginning.

I got a chance to talk to Tony and SoulClap and here is what went down

Soul Occupants

WYDU: What’s good my people, would you mind some introductions for those the might not know who you are?

Tony: What’s hood y’all? I’m ya kid with 9 lives, Tony Tigerstyle.

Clap: I’m the Clapster. Most of y’all already know me, so I will keep it short… Making Beats for 3 ½ years now…

W: Alright, so you are pulling the “Foreign Exchange” trick, with SoulClap being from Germany and Tony being from LA, how did the two of you hook up?

Clap: In the end of ’05 Asphate Woodhavet hit me up, and asked if I wanna make some beats for the label Madeline Soul LLC. It’s DJ Episodes label, and HE told me to hit up Tony. It started through myspace, then we started chatting on Yahoo messenger, got to know each other. I sent him beats, he took his picks, and the rest is history… The first track we did was My ChildHOOD, everybody loved that joint, so we decided to start working on an album. We came up with the name “Soul Occupants” pretty quick, cause that’s who we are and we represent.(the sole owners of our position) Since we have great chemistry we became really close friends with time.

W: A lot of the WYDU fans know about SoulClap and his past, but Tony might be a bit more of mystery if they haven’t read the interview that he did early on WYDU, can you give some info on your background?

Tony: No problem, I’m originally from the south-side of Chicago, Illinois. I was raised in a place called the Quad Cities (Davenport, Iowa/ Rock Island, Il.) It’s the home of football legend Roger Craig. And, I’ve resided for the past 18 years in Long Beach, Ca. I was a finalist in the same competition that launched Joel Ortiz (EA Sports Livestyle Rap Battle 2004), but didn’t get the decision before the final round to meet Ortiz. I’m mostly known just as a battle emcee, but I’m working hard to change that. I’ve performed and written with numerous top musicians who’ve helped me develop myself over that time, and I’m just trying to not have my contribution to hip-hop as an emcee go unnoticed. Live shows and recording is my sh%t! You know that guy who can rip anytime anywhere, but just hasn’t got that chance or proper forum to show it off….well, nice to meet you, lol. I was blessed, however, to do a few things in LA, but it’s hard to stand out. The area is very saturated and cliquish; if that’s the right term for it. But, I still love and rep Cali too.

W: So you two are vibing together for the next three months in Germany, right? How is that going down and how did that come about?

Tony: It’s going like I expected, great! We’re taking our time to fill in the pot holes we see missing, and give the fans like us, what they really want. Good beats and rhymes…classics. We met through a mutual friend, DJ Episode of Madeline Soul Music (Des Moines, IA). And we just were on the same level in lots of ways. We both wanted to give hip-hop a shot in the arm. Speaking for myself, I love the fact that it’s still evolving and growing, but so does fungus, lol. To me, certain aspects need to be preserved. The main goal for me is to push the envelope, and re-establish the level of quality writing, performing, and emceeing in general. The clothes, cars, and who you’re down with is played. For real listeners, and fans…..you just gotta bring it.

Clap: We just needed to get together. Tony didn’t have the chance to record whenever he wanted and needed some change, so we got him over here. Now we can work on everything more effectively. We can pick the cuts together, he can directly tell me how he wants the beats to be, he can spit the rhymes for me before we record it, we just contribute to the others work, which wasn’t possible in that way before. Everything is a lot easier now. When the track is written we can directly go over to my boy Esperado’s (www.myspace.com/esperadomc) and record it. Plus I purchased a new computer specifically for music only. I can copy the whole session from Esperado, and mix it at home. Perfect!

W: Tony what is it like being in Germany for all of this? That would have to be a great big culture shock. What did it take to take three months to do this?

Tony: Honestly, it is very different, but I’m so used to change it’s not that big of a shock. I do like the energy for the authentic approach we have. I’ve received a warm welcome from everyone I’ve encountered so far. I just want to do the fans justice, and let ‘em know there’s much, much, more out here for ‘em. And, to knock down the wall for the emcee who is reading this right now, and knows he or she has that hotness. WE (undergrounders) make the game go ‘round…believe that. As far as what did it take? God blessing us, and I guess just the love of my friends, family behind me, and the haters to motivate me. Gotta have them haters, hahahaha.

Clap: OK, this is a hint to one of our album joints called “The hate that made me”. Let’s just say the player hater’s ball on Dave Chappelle was just the beginning, lol. I think the main difference is that everything is much more expensive over here. You ( in the U.S.) complain about the gas prices? We have to pay twice as much…

W: How important do you think it is to be able to actually sit down and discuss things to the outcome of the album?

Tony: I think conceptualizing is mandatory for making classic art period. You gotta have vision, and be in a comfortable place, wherever that is for you. And, if you have a partner, they and you have to be on a similar page. Respect for each others contribution and creative process is also very valuable. Without that, it’s kaos.

W: What do you two hope to achieve with this album? Do you have big label dreams or just hoping get the Soul Occ’s name out there?

Tony: God willing?!? What I want to give is the same feeling Run gave me at the Fresh Fest back in the day. Also, the same feeling I got from all of my ‘big brothers and sisters of hip-hop’ watching them on Yo! MTV Raps and Classic RapCity growing up. Man, If I can transfer that energy to the next kid comin up…. job well done. What about you Clap?

SoulClap: Our approach is, to make good music. We are just doing us. You can’t push us in any direction, we got our own, very unique sound. If we wanna use synths, we will do that, cause if it’s hot it’s hot. We will add our own flava, we will have cuts on it or whatever. We got shit to bang your trunk, we got shit to make you think, we got shit to make you feel, we got it all, and everybody can relate to it, that’s important! We will check the label opportunities later, that’s not the most important thing right now.

W: So is there an album name yet? Do you have any particular way your are intending to release the project?

Clap: It will be a concept album called “Soul Brothers”, and updated version of the Blues Brothers theme, but I don’t wanna tell too much right now.

W: I know you’ve been keeping potential guests underwraps, but any chance of WYDU exclusives being mentioned? Hahaha

Clap: We got a track with Punch called “Dedicated to the B’s” and a track with Superstar Quamallah called “The Raw”. Those are the names that are already definite. I really don’t wanna say too much, but I got a mail from my hero today and he might end up on it too… We also have Rosevelt from Inland Empire, CA on a track called “Paper Steady” and might have 2 or 3 more guests, but I really can’t say anything else right now.

W: What is in the immediate future for the Soul Occs, besides just working on the album? Any shows planned for while Tony is there?

Clap: We got a show with EMC, Torae and Marco Polo on May 26th and will be performing as the main act in a freestyle battle on May 31st, I will be one of the judges too. We are working on doing a birthday Bash with The Smile Rays too. They will be in Germany for three months too, Daisey’s b-day is June 9th, mine is June 10th, so I came up with the idea of doing a show together around that time, it may go down in Berlin. Besides that I’m trying to get us some more shows. Holla, lol!

W: Also gotta ask if Clap is going to be making it across the pond? It’s his turn next to get his butt over hear so we can show him how to do it American style….haha

Clap: It’s just a matter of time, give me those dollars (or better euros at this time) and I’m on the next plane… It still might happen that there will be a Soul Occs Canada tour in August/September, but we don’t have a definite word on that yet…
W: Any last words to the fans out there in blog land?

Tony: Hey, I just want to say thank you for listening, pull ya shoes up, and getcha neck ready, lol! Hope you enjoy what we have in store for y’all. Keep it regular!!

W: Alright, best of luck to the two of you, looking forward to the album

Clap: Thank you, much appreciated!

Tony: No doubt, and thank for the interview. That’s what’s up! Soul Occs baby!

The Soul Occs - finally united! Diary: Days 1 and 2

Sunday, April 13th, 3.30pm, I'm waiting at the airport in Hamburg with my homie Claas, for my brother from another, that I've been knowing for over 2 years and who became a really close friend! We didn't even had to wait that long cause the flight arrived early. It was a great feeling when he came out of that terminal. Finally we were united!

He came with 2 huuuuuge bags, one was weighting 60 pounds, but he was flirting with that girl at the airport so he didn't have to pay any extra fee, haha. Plus he had a backpack, basically just for his fitted hats. So, with Tony and 2 huuge bags in my car I was much slower, but Tony was totally feeling the autobahn, cause we could go like 200mph, haha. At least that's what he said.

Back home we were lucky to get a good parking lot, Tony was enjoying my crib, but we really needed to get something to eat, so it was time for his very first Döner!

The rest of the night we spent chilling out with Claas and Matt, listening to music, making beats, rapping, cutting and drinking beer! It was dope, but we went to bed early cause we were tired as hell.

Due to that we got up early and went to the studio at 10am to knock out a track and a hook for another one. On our way back we stopped at a computer store where I ordered a new pc, just for music. So when I get it next week it will be on, I will hook up m keyboard, install all the plugins and we will reach a whole new level of creativity!
As a special treat for the WYDU listeners I uploaded a short snippet of a new track, you can't listen to it anywhere else, it's ruff, not mixed, just really raw and exclusively for you!

Back home we ate something and Tony took a "nap". I started making space in my wardrobe for his stuff, I got a lot of paperwork and shit in there, which I finally arranged and carried it down to the basement... I felt tired and got down on the bed, closed my eyes and I was gone, woke up 3 hours later, Tony was still "napping" lol. Then the doorbell rang, Matt arrived. I started to cook something... Rice with Beef and my special tomato-cream sauce, tomatoes, paprika and lot of cheese. A little later Claas arrived, too. We were watching that 70's show while Tony was communication with his people back home on the messenger. After that we played some Crash Team Racing on the Play Station, the version for the PS1, this might be my favorite game ever! After Matt and Claas left we were just chilling, watching DVD's. I showed him videos of some german rap classics, we were watching And1 mixtapes, Fade to black... So at around 4 am I got to bed. When I woke up at 9, I found Tony like this:

I think his "nap" gave him a littl extra energy. Anyway, instead of going to university I decided to go back to bed.

Those were the days 1 and 2, thanks for checking it out! We will keep you updated with new exclusie music, you will get some freestyles, new snippets, videos, funny stories and all kinds of stuff!

Much Love

New Music

Whattup World?
Got some news that I wanted to share with y'all! Last weekend a homie from the states visited me. Asphate Woodhavet aka Skatterbrayne. We had a lot of fun, we went to a jazz, funk & soul party with live music and music from the turntables, went record shopping, went to the studio, to the beach, drank a lot of beer, chewed on some kind of roots, played NBA 2K8 and hung out with my people. We are in the process of recording an EP, we finished 4 joints during his time here, like 3 more will follow. I just edited a short video clip with videos and pics of the weekend, to one of the tracks we did, it's called Time Benders, I think you will feel it!

Besides that, The Soul Occs are on the rise! Tony will come to Germany in about 2 weeks. I just put a new Track on my myspace page featuring Punchline, called "Dedicated to the B's" which will be on our album called "Soul Brothers"
We will open for Torae and eMC in at least one show when they are coming to Europe and I'm really ooking forward to that!

The Jay-Z remix album was made in 3 days. I saw in an online store that the accapellas were out on wax and I directly ordered them. I had so many people asking me to send them, but I didn't do it. I hate people that are waiting for other people to buy stuff and then be so cocky to ask for it, buy it yourself, bitches! (Not in general, but it's the case for accapellas, cause only producers and DJ's want them...) So I was one of the first that was done with it, that was my goal, cause I knew there will be too many remixes out after a pretty short time. Although I just had 3 days the response was really good, people loved it, thanks again for everybody who downloaded it and spread the word! (Someone even made amyspace page just to represent it) Too bad rapidshare doesn't have a download count anymore, next time i will try to upload it on zshare... I have no clue how many people d-loaded the remix album and the ep...

Now the most important thing! M man Tony Tigerstyle from LA will come to Germany next month and will stay for a while, so we can record the Soul Occupants album. People are waiting for it so we need to get it started! We will try to shoot some videos too. I made a new myspace page for us, and uploaded some older tracks plus snippets from new tracks. I would be really glad if you checked it! Soul Occs Myspace
During his time in Germany we will shoot a little documentary and put up some new snippets, videos and everything, like a little diary, I will post that stuff on WYDU, if you are interested! I'm trying to get a couple of features on our album, we will definitely have Superstar Quamallah, Haji and Souleez on the joint! We will most likely have Punchline on it too and I'm trying to get Ace and Strick on the Jammy too, maybe Paula Perry... But I can't promise anything, those are just people I have in mind that will be possible...

Can't forget about my little EP with Brandon J Atlas from the Madeline Soul Crew. Please check out his myspace too!
