Our next and final First Priority Music member is Barsha's Explicit Lyrics. Get past the possibly worse album cover ever to grace a hip hop album and you have another FPM gem.
The album, as most of the other FPM albums, was produced by King Of Chill and Audio Two. As far as mucis goes, it is very similar to the King of Swing sound. Hard drums and classic breaks dot the album for begining to end and takes the listener back to a time were simpler was just better.
Barsha himself sounds alot like Kool G Rap as far as his vocal tone and delivery. He may not have the Kool Geniuses lyrical content, but he can handle his own on the mic, something that was kind of suprising to me the first time I listened to him, judging by his album cover.

Next up some business. Fridays from now on will be request day. I might be asking for trouble doing this, but I want people to find some of the stuff they are looking for. Rules for this though are simple... I WILL NOT put up anything that is still in print. It MUST be out of print (for me, if Amazon.com itself doesn't sell it, it's out of print) I might email some of the harder stuff that is still in print or some of the recently re-issued stuff, but I won't put them for the public to download. Request either in this thread or in the box during the week. I'll cut it off at Wednesday for that friday and it'll be no more than five albums. First five albums will be posted up that friday. If there is more than five albums, the left over ones will be left for the next friday. If I don't have it, I'll do my best to keep an eye on it. If people start acting like asses, then fuck it, I'll stop doing it. Also, look on albumbase.com to see if they have it before requesting it.

If you read my posts, you know I like to do things in a series of posts. It just kind of ties everything together and I think it's easy for me to pick out what I want to upload. It's also easier to write about as well. I try to get them done in a week or so and upload four to five albums per series. Well I'm just about to wrap up the FPM family series with the Barsha album going to be dropped Monday, then I'm going to start a series on Miami Bass music. I have about 10 ideas written down for series topics, I'm going to list four of them, and the readers can vote on which series they would like to see next. I'm not smart enough to create a poll for blogger, so just vote in the chat box or in this thread. Choices are:

Part three of our FPM family takes to the 1988 album from the Alliance. The Alliance were made up of King Of Chill, K-Swift and DJ Skill. They were also among the first to drop albums on the label, right after Audio Two and MC Lyte. King of Chill would become one of the main producers at the label.
I honestly don't know shit about the group for the most part and was only introduced recently to the album by Moves from the Cocaine Blunts board. I've only gone through the ablum 2-3 times real well, but it's in typical FPM fashion, a definete must for any fan of the label.

Part four of the series is another album I know very little about. While looking for an album cover and some info on Michie, I found out she was the first female Canadian hip hop artist signed to an american label. The album itself is a weird mix of raggae and hip hop, which was abundant in the early 90's with the dancehall craze taking off. She has a done some acting in recent years. The Cenobites were a group made up of Godfather Don and Kool Keith. They made some tracks after the Ultra's Four Horsemen LP then Bobbito put them on an EP in 94'. Later in 95' they released the EP with added tracks. In 2000 a cd version was dropped with another extra track.
I had a post I did earlier on the group that got moved to Bombfirst.com, but it got earesed and I'm running out of time.....soooooo....on to the next album

Another album and group I know very little about. I remember Yo! MTV Raps showed a video for "She's A ...." once, and I loved the song. Getting the album was a bitch though, but I finally ran into it in Salem, Oregon of all places in a little used music store, on tape of course. I finally bought it off of Amazon.com this past week and recieved it this week.
The album is actually better than I remember it being. Some pretty familar samples used for the time, but a solid album.
As far as I know the group was out of New Jersey. Tony D mixes the album, but other than that, it is just some unknown producers. I saw some record nerd trying to sell this on ebay for $14.00, when I bought it for $2.00 on amazon. Gotta love those ebay sellers.

First Priority Part Two: Audio Two - I Don't Care: The Album (Atlantic, 1990)
First things first, it took me a lot to motivate myself to write up this post. I started back up at school this week, and it's a bitch. Thursday is basically a Friday to me since I don't have class on Friday, although I do have to work at my internship at noon on fridays, but I can handle that. So I'm ready to get crazy. After downing 3/4 of the 40oz. I bought after class, I really wanted to do some online poker, but I told myself I have to bust out a post before anything. I have to take advantage of the time I have with school going on. This is also my (hopefully) last year, so it's going to be a bitch. That being said, I like to think I'm pretty accommodating on people requesting stuff. If I have it, I'll try my best to up it a fairly reasonable time. Sometimes, it might take me awhile. I don't have hi-speed at home, so I do most of my uploading/downloading at work. Meaning, sometimes I actually have to work. So I'm try my best to throw it up as quick as possible, but the sites posts come first, then friends, fellow bloggers who I respect, frequent posters to the site and then every one else. That's just the way it is. I'm a nice guy, but I can be a dick as well......

Next, if I find a blog that I really like, you best believe I'm going to post it up on here. There are a lot of shitty blogs out there, kind of like the music. I also don't think this is some kind of contest on who can have the best blog. I want to point out the best sources regardless if they are better than mine or not, it's not a fucking contest. So the good stuff must be pointed out. Well today I was going through my referrals on my site meter and saw a new blog, Bust The Facts. I like to see who is linking me up, curiousity I guess, and saw this new site and clicked on it. Low and behold, I ran into a blog that is somewhat of a wet dream to me. There is shit on this blog that I had looooooooooooooooong forgot about. It's done by Dread Pirate Roberts, who I've seen on the blog rounds. This blog has some pretty obscure shit, so if you are into my blog and like the rare/obscure/out of print stuff, this site is pretty damn good. It's only been going for a few days, but there is enough there for me to be downloading at work all day tomorrow. CHECK IT OUT!
Audio Two - I Don't Care: The Album (First Priority/Atlantic 1990)

Part two of our First Priority Music Family series leads us to who I orginally wanted to lead off with, Audio Two. Audio Two were composed of Milk Dee on vocals and Giz as the DJ. As mentioned before, the two were brothers and sons of label head, Nat Robinson. Despite that MC Lyte seemed to be the top seller (I don't have the actual numbers, just guessing) on the label, Audio Two seemed to be the the crown princes of the label. This is was only natural since Giz and Milk were Nat Robinson's natural son's while Lyte was only a half sibling of the two. They dropped a hip hop classic in "Top Billin" (my personal favorite all -time favorite hip hop single) in 87' and then their debut album "What More Can I Say" in 88'. It garned enough attention to put them up amoung top releases of one of the best hip hop years ever. In 1990 they dropped their somewhat underrated album "I Don't Care: The Album".
I've read a lot of bad press on this album. I think it was actually TO bragadocious for people. The album got slammed for being "to one dimensional" (go figure, now it's okay). It also caught flack for some of the lyrics on "Whatcha' Lookin' At?" which contained some so called "bigotary" lyrics, with his "gay mutha's should get punched in the face" line along with a few other questionable lines. As a naive high school senior, I loved it. Not saying it was right, but it added to the albums attractiveness. As far as lyrics, there is nothing ground breaking. It's either party starters or Milk bragging how bad he is. To me hip hop is built on that though, people forget that. Yeah, it's fine to grow, but like the roots of a tree, the roots of hip hop also hold the art form into the ground firmly and thats what Audio Two did. It's in your face bragging rhymes. Tracks like "Milk Does The Body Good (remix)" are straight badass lyrics. While it's true Milks lyrics are not deep or politicaly correct, but to me, this is the stuff that drew me to hip hop in the first place. They are one of the first artists to dis MC Hammer on "Start It Up Y'all" with his "(Pos K & others)So what's up with Hammer? Yo Hammer can't rhyme and 357 is a bunch of Ho's". Straight in your face lyrics and hard core beats. Don't expect to be blown away by lyrics.
Beat wise, it's all done by Milk. It's a bit more musical that "What More Can I Say", but that ain't sayin' much. Lot's of familar breaks (familar because of Milk and the other old school cats) and some hard drums. Milk seemed to still favor the 808 approach to things that had started to pass by NY by this time. There is nothing mind blowing as far as beats go, but for a simpler time, this music was great. I remember playing this a lot on the way to my senior year in high school (yeah I'm dating myself) and knowing just about all the words. This is a classic to me, fuck everyone else....

First Priority Music Family Part One: Kings Of Swing - Strategy (Virgin, Bumrush 1990)
Our spotlight gets shown on one of the more slept on labels & extended fam's of the late 80's-early 90's, the First Priority Music label for the next handful of posts. They were THE crew after the Juice Crew disbanded in the late 80's, yet they don't recieve much recoginition in the grand scheme of things in the history of the hip hop culture. The FPM family consisted of; Audio Two (brothers Milk Dee & Gizmo), MC Lyte, Alliance, Michie Mee, Kings Of Swing, Positive K, Barsha, and one of two in house producers (Milk Dee was the other) King of Chill. The label was lead by Lyte's, Milk's & Giz's father, Nat Robinson who, if I remember right, started up the label to help Milk further his hip hop career.
As noted, much of the production on many of the albums was handled by either Audio Two or King of Chill and consisted of the "bare bones" approach so highly popular during the day. It was great "boom bap" music of the time. The label never garnished any high record sales, except with maybe Lyte's releases (gold on the first two releases ?), but still mark one of the greatest labels in the "golden age" of hip hop. They are still in business and I was suprised to see they had the R&B sensation from a few years ago, Eamon.

Kings Of Swing - Strategy

The first legit post of this series see's the Kings of Swing's album "Strategy" which was released in 1990. The Kings of Swing consisted of Sugar Kay, Mike Master & Cocoa Chanelle. Despite the horrible looking R&B/New Jack Swing looking cover
the album contains some rather nice tracks. The album was produced by the two in house producers, Milk and King of Chill, and has some rather funky breaks used, something that seemed more diverse than some other FPM family releases. Two Minutes of Funk is just that, two minutes of funk and uses a loop that Marley Marl dug up on LL's To Da Break Of Dawn. Betty Boop has a funky guitar loop conjured up by King Of Chill. On the next track, Nod Your Head To This uses a loop that would later be used by DJ Muggs on Cypress Hill's Real Estate track from their self-titled debut. The cut also contains some crazy DJ work.
One of the odd things about the group then, and even now, is the fact the female, Cocoa Chanelle, was the groups DJ and a damn good one at that. This album contains lots of cuts and scratching from the female DJ and even has two DJ cuts on here. From what I read, she is now a DJ on one of the NY radio stations.
While they are not the greatest MC's, they are able enough not to distract from the overall product and let's face it, lyricism wasn't at an all time during this time period for the most part. I'm sure overrating this because of the old school mode I've been in lately, but this is one of the better albums of 1990 (I always thought 90' was the most over hyped of the so-called "Golden Years"), defintely give it a listen if you at all into the older stuff.

Westcoast Flava - 304 Style
For those who know of DJ Quik's homeboys, AMG, Hi-C and 2nd II None, he actually rolled with a few more hombres in the 90's. The whole cast of characters was called the 304 POSSE. It consisted of Quik, 2nd II None (Dee & KK), AMG, Hi-C (my personal fav and one of my all time fav rappers) & Playa Hamm (from Penthouse Players Clique). I know of one other possible member but he only made a few very brief appearances on a few Quik songs, JFN (The Funky White Nigga). Their first appearance together was on "Quik Is the Name's" song "Skanless", the last track on the album. Quik went platinum with his first album and has been a visible producer all these years doing some hits for the likes of Janet Jackson and Tony, Toni, Tone. He was on Death Row in their hey day amd had a hit with Truth Hurts on Aftermath. I urge everyone to not sleep on his latest album, "Trauma". I think Quik stepped his game up on this one after slipping for years on his own projects.

AMG gained fame with "Bitch Betta Have My Money". His sex raps appeared to be a step above 2 Live Crew, yet stayed just as raunchy. But, alas, he feuded with Quik in the mid to late 90's putting out a way below par second album with no help from tha Quiksta. And has since fallen into obscurity except for his appearances on various Quik albums.

And, I am wrapping this up with Hi-C. My favorite member of the 304. His first effort, "Skanless" is my top 10 albums of all time. By no means do I consider Crawf Dog a Great MC. But, his tales of sex and drinking will make you laugh and he just seems to put just a little different spin on his tales of romping through the bedroom. His voice stands alone which also sets him apart. Hi-C never takes himself seriously . His laid back attitude comes off as approachable. making his stories something you can relate to.

Two For One Friday: Travis' Fav's Part Four & Five
Being hungover sucks. I got off of work early yesterday, met up with a buddy that had tickets to the Colorado Rockies game. One beer turned into two, two into three, three into four, then to a bar across the street from the stadium. Not sure when I got home last night, but getting up at 5 a.m. for work this morning was a bit rough. It's still rough. Why do we do this to ourselves? I mean, really, I knew what the result was going to be when I downed my first beer. The good thing is I get off at noon (in two hours), then I'm going to, get this, a VIP tour of Coors Brewing in Golden Colorado. Yeah, that should be fun. Ain't that some shit?

The hip hop game today is waaaay to serious. J-Zone is the antithesis of that train of thought. Back in the day, it was alright to have fun on an album, but those days are long gone. With J-Zone you have a fun album that is crass, arrogant, and full of "bitch" "ho" and various other offending lyrics. If you don't have a sense of humor, you won't enjoy any of his albums. For those demented mother fuckers out there, this album is a lost classic.
As much as the lyrics are fun to listen to, the beats on A Bottle of Whup Ass are amazing. As you might be able to tell, I'm a fan of production that makes music out of noise, and Zone does just that. He's very unorthdox behind the boards, he has lots of little sounds and sound bites dotted all over the album. I like to consider him this era's Bomb Squad.
This album is available on wax still here, the cd though has long been out of print. I was lucky enough to grab it on hip hop site when they had it. If you are into this type of stuff, I highly suggest any of his albums. Not only is this one of my favorite albums, he is also one of my favorite artists.

Don't let the cover fool you, this is an album with nine solid tracks (one attempt at a love song is pure fast foward material) that never gets it's just due. For those of you not familar with Groove B Chill, they were a NY group that was trying to cash in the whole Daisy Age vibe going on at the time (although I'm not sure it was or intential or label influenced) and also made apperances in the "legendary" House Party movie as well, themselves actually. Daryl Mitchell would go on to act in several movies and would go on to be a good friend to the Christopher Reeves foundation after he himself would be wheel chair bound after a motorcycle accident.
The album is pretty happy go-lucky which goes with the whole Daisy Age thing. The beats are suprisingly good. It also marks, what I believe to be, the first apperance of Pete Rock

You knew this site couldn't go very long without doing a post on it's name sake album, did you?!?! Someone once said ignorance is bliss, well this here album is full of bliss then. I'm not even going to lie and say this is one quality album, cause it's not. But when you are a snot nosed Junior/Senior in high school, this was some quality filfth to blast in your Volkswagen Jetta with two 12"s in the trunk and get all the girls go "ewwwwww" when you drove by. Somethings just stick with you all the way through your journey through life. This was my favorite Ig'nant album in High School, more so than even 2 Live Crew (I've always strived to move away from the masses, and I even enjoyed Poison Clan's 2 Low Life Muthas even more than most of the 2 Live stuff as well). This was one of those albums that got a lot of play during parties and in the car crusin. Pure ignorance in all it's bliss.
Most albums of this type are not high on quality music. I'm not saying this album is totally deviod of any musical value. It had some killer 808 kicks (Your System) that could rattle a trunk. I kind of thought of it as a cross between the Miami Bass of that era and NY music with some New Jack Swing thrown into the pot for some mainstream value (Half). It used humor (Xactly & Stole My Shit) and straight up sex rhymes (Wake Your Daughter Up). It had something for everybody, even cussing women out (Fake Hair Wearin' Bitch) a joint I still listen to when a chick pisses me off.
As I said, this will never go down as the most lyrical, the best beats, or any socially redeeming values, but in the realm of Ig'nant albums, this is a straight up classic. This bad boy is going for a pretty high price by the hipsters on amazon, so this might be a better idea to download this and sit back and just not care about shit.

Diggin' For Used CD's
First on the plate, some unfinished business, some new blogs and myspace stuff for the myspace geeks.
I would like to apologize for not re-upping WYDU Classics VOL 2 & 3 yet, I've been having troubles finding time to up stuff this past week, but they should be up in the next couple days. Also the corrupt tracks on the Hurricane G will be up shortly as well. Also, I'll set up a link for that Odd Squad sometime this week as well. Sorry for the delay and thanks for the patience.
Second off, there have been a heap of new blogs in the last month or so. There are a lot of good ones out there, but I thought I'd give shine to a few personal favorite new ones.
Soundnexx: We here at WYDU try to share a little knowlege along with our links. Some people obviously enjoy our added writing and others probably don't even read what we write, they just go straight for the downloads, for each their own. For those of you that are into learning something while getting some great music, Soundnexx has great posts, even more detailed than ours at times. Be sure to check him out.
Crooklyn's Classics: Just found this blog today, but it was enough to get me excited rather quickly. There are some great discographies (Ras Kass, MOP, Beatnuts) and some other nice gems. Defintely worth checking out on a daily basis.
Digital Stealth: Tons of goodies on this site, stuff you don't see on other sites, so defintely worth checking out daily (check out the new Outkast in the chatbox)
U Gotta Digg Dat: Strictly 12" singles, but I love stuff like that. For all the 12 inch fiends out there.
Also, I can't tell, but it looks like a lot of people are sleeping on 12inchers, those who are, need to wake the fuck up, the site is another vinyl addicts, it's rare 12 inch heaven...CHECK IT OUT!!!
I endorse anything I have in my links. I check them all at least a few times a week. Lots of good stuff, some educate, some just have good links, whatever your flavor is, there is something there for anyone.
Last bit of business, we started a WYDU myspace page. Why, I'm not sure, I'm still not fond of the whole myspace craze, but it's there. Actually we have it in hopes to strike up some connections with some old school artists for future interviews and the such. But we invite everyone to stop by. It's pretty plain right now, but we hope to get it spiced up in the near future. We are also thinking of something exclusive to the myspace page in the future, so be on the look out for that.
Also, as any of the loyal readers will know I (travis) am a HUGE Masta Ace fan, in fact, this blog was basically born from the masta ace boards. Polarity and I first started this after talking and exchanging music after meeting on the masta ace boards then DJ Soulclap and Phatsoul both joined us later on, both were also from the boards. For those of you who don't know, Masta Ace is coming back later this year/early next year with a group effort. eMC is set to give all the real hip hop fans an album. For those of you who don't know who eMC is, it's going to be Ace, Punchline, Wordsworth, and Stricklin. It's an album I have been eagerly waiting for since hearing about it over a year ago. Well for you Ace fans, there is a eMC myspace page that you can all get the latest news for this super group, so be sure to add them as your "friend".

One of my favorite past times is going to a circuit of used music stores here in Denver. One's mans trash is another mans treasure, and that saying goes for used CD's. The past couple years, I've been mainly trying to replace some of my lost/stolen/broken gems from the past more than concentrating on newer music being released, and what better way to do that than scouring used CD/Vinly stores. Now, I never got turntables, so I'm strictly a CD person. I wouldn't mind doing the vinyl thing, but starting from scratch this late in life just isn't an option, not while I'm a broke college student still. You can find some forgotten gems digging through the stacks and stacks of Me Phi Me's, Deion Sanders, MC Hammers & Arrested Development used CD's.
I just recently went on a trip to a couple stores the other day and though I'd share a couple CD's I picked up super cheap. For the trip, I picked up 11 total CD's for a low total price of a little over $16.00, not a bad day. It might have been a little more quanity over quality, butr I still managed to come across a couple joints I've been looking long and hard for for quite awhile. I'm only uploading two albums for the time being, but a lot of these will be seen in the future for different series I have planned.

I hear virtually no one ever mention this disk, which is suprising since Run DMC produced the album and it was released on major label MCA and it's Do It Again single recieved a lot of play on Yo! MTV Raps. I had never heard it before myself though, so I guess there is some reason for it. It's actually not all that bad. Worth the buck fifty I put out for it. It's reminiscent of the sound for that period, but I enjoyed the initial listen for it.

I remember the single Who's Da Flavor, but never bothered picking up this release back in the day either and never really planned on it. Then I downloaded the Next School effort that Ali Dee was a part of and enjoyed that, so I thought I'd give it a listen. Well, it was only a buck, so I can't be too mad, but I didn't care for it a lot. To chiche for the age, with the posse chorus's, the beats. Kind of sounds like Young Black Teenagers without the Bomb Squad production, which as most of you might know, would suck.
Kings Of Swing - Strategy (Bumrush/ Virgin Records 1990)

I completely forgot about this album back in the day. I avoided it like the plauge because of the cover, for obvious reasons. It wasn't until Robbie at Unkut.com brought it up again about six months ago on his "Decent albums with bad R & B covers" post that I remembered this. They were apart of the First Priority Music family, with Audio Two, MC Lyte, Alliance, Michie Mee, and Barsha. I've been on a HUGE FPM kick lately, so finding this album was one of the highlites to the trip. I'll be uploading it in the future, I have it planned for a upcoming series. Speaking of Barsha and bad covers, I was as equally excited finding this gem. I just recently found it online to download, but finding an actual copy was even better. Ignore the cover, because it has to be if not the worse, one of the worse covers ever. More First Priority Music family sounds by Audio Two & King Of Chill, it's actually a very good album, worth the buck fiddy for sure. His vocal tone and delievery sounds reminiscent of Kool G Rap.
Sha' Dasious - Phunk Wucha Heard (RCA 1994)

Honestly, I never heard of this cat, until vinyladdicts did a post on him on their site a while ago. Someone then posted it up on Cocaine Blunts and I liked it. I had my eye on a copy at another store for awhile, but found it at another place for a buck fifty and didn't hesitate to grab it. This is a decent album for being fairly unheard of, even for being on RCA.
Trespass OST (Sire/Warner Bros 1992)

This came out back in the day when Soundtracks were still half way decent, and I think this is one of the better ones. I had it back in the day, but it was one of the albums that I had lost through multiple moves and the such. Artists such as Cube/Ice T, P.E., AMG, Black Sheep, Lord Finesse, & others grace this soundtrack. I saw it's going for a shiny new penny (or old) on amazon, definetly worth the one cent, but its always more fun finding it yourself.
Who's The Man OST (Uptown/MCA 1993)

This soundtrack wasn't as good as I remembered. Another replacement for my collection, but worth the price just for the Biggie track.
Insomnia: The Erick Sermon Compilation Album (Interscope 1996)

This album should be rather familar to most of the readers here. I lost it ages ago and was living off the burned copy I had. It's not a great album, but not bad either. Going for a shiny penny on Amazon. (I need to start buying more stuff off of amazon).
Lifers Group - Lifers Group (Hollywood Basic 1991) No Cover Found

This was more of a reminiscent purchase than anything. I have this on tape and figured I'd grab it. By the time I found this, I was in a shopping frenzy and didn't realize what I was doing. For those of you unfamilar with Lifers Group, it was inmates at Rahway Prison, doing an album.. This was the first EP they did, there was a full album released in 93', which I've never heard. It's not great, but "The Real Deal" and "Belly Of The Beast" weren't all that bad.
Tracey Lee - Maney Facez (Universal Records 1997)
Price: $3.00
This was the high priced item of my shopping spree. In my opinion, this was one of the better albums from a lackluster 97'. With a majority of the production done by members of Puffy's Hitmen team, this was a fairly listenable album with some shining moments as well. Not sure why it never gets is just due, but worth the pick up.

Two For One Friday: Beat Boxin' Non Stopin'

Son Of Bazerk Feat No Self Control & The Band - Bazerk, Bazerk, Bazerk (MCA, 1991)

We jump into part two of my own personal favorite albums today. The album
we have today is quite possibly one of the most overlooked albums ever in my opinion. Son Of Bazerk was a "group" of sorts coming straight outta Strong Island, backed in it's sonic soundscape by the almighty Bomb Squad. Bazerk was the lead MC, backed by No Self Control & The Band, which according to the inner liner notes, consisted of MC Halfpint, Almighty Jahwell, Daddy Rawe, and Sandman, all which pop up through all the album. As much as the group dynamic is strong and adds to the album, the main reason this album grabbed my attention was the crazy, crazy noise, provided by The Bomb Squad.
It was 1991, another number, another summer, and The Bomb Squad was THE Squad on the production tip. They made music out of noise and as much as PE's It Takes A Nation Of Millions... was created out of chaos, Bazerk, Bazerk, Bazerk took that just a step further. Pure, unadultrated noise and it was beautiful. The Bomb Squad was known for it's twisting of samples and making them almost unrecognizable, and this album was no different. Driving basslines dominate tracks, heavy scratching, driving synths and looped guitar riffs that help add to the absolute craziness of the album. It's as if someone had a bucket full of musical concepts and threw it at a canvas and this is what came out of it. I love albums like this, and there is a reason The Bomb Squad is my second favorite, this album just adds to the legacy.
As far as the lyrics, SOB has enough style and vocal presence to not detract from the flurry of sounds coming at the listener. On some tracks such as What Could Be Better Bitch Bazerk actually is the main focus of the track, which doesn't happen much on the album. On other tracks such as the single Change The Style, he even adds to the chaos on the track. His half shouted/half sang flow suites the tracks fine. With his crew splattered through out the album, it comes off as kind of a 60's funk/soul album half the time. Sure, some concepts on the album fall short to keep it from being a bonafied classic, but the tracks that standout are more than enough to make up for any short commings.
I'm sure some people will think I'm crazy mentioning this in the greatness of so many classic albums, but this album got constant play from me for a year or two (at least until Masta Ace INC's Slaughtahouse dropped in 93') and the production makes it one of my top 10 favorite produced albums of all-time. Standout tracks: The Band Gets Swivey On The Wheels, Part One, Change The Style, One Time For The Rebal, What Could Be Better Bitch, Trapped Inside The Rage Of Jahwell, Are You With Me, J Dubs Theme (TIGHT FUCKING SONG)

This next offering is shrouded in mystery. I'm not sure if it's a legit album, or some kind of homemade compilation, but it's a fine collection of beatboxed based songs and live performances by some of the all-time beat box greats such as Biz Markie, Doug E Fresh, & Rahzel. I've always considered beatboxing as the fifth element of hip hop and this little compilation is the only thing I've ever seen covering the art on an album of sorts. I looked online and found nothing for it. A folder in the Rar. directs to a internet site, but I can't find anything tying the site and the compilation together.
Anyway, I'll leave it at that. I recieved it without track numbers, so it's all in alphabetical order. Thanks goes out to our blog designer, Dawg aka Chris of the almighty Bombfirst.com and the new illhill.com/gunspiracy site concentrating on the underground hip hop stylee.

This was the 'Cyde's first release without Fatlip as far as I know. It kind of dropped as an promo only release at first then became more widely distrubted. I picked my copy off of Hip Hop Site back in the day. If you were a fan of the Labcabin.. you'll probably enjoy this album. It's pretty mellow for the most part, although Reinvented sounds like it could have been on Plain Rap.
Slim Kid Tre- Legend Of Phoenix (1999, 2000?)

Finding anything on this album online is almost impossible. No cover, no real mention of it, although it did get posted up on Cocaine Blunts awhile back. I was a big fan of Tre' so when he started selling this on his flyingbaboon site around 99-2000, I grabbed it up. Just a warning, if you don't have an open mind when it comes to music, don't bother downloading this. It's more hip hop than his Liberation LP (I haven't heard his new release, but I heard it's more sing songy than anything he's done), but it's still uses a live instrumentation on all the tracks. All in all, I like to think I have a pretty open mind when it comes to music, but this album is really only so-so.

First in the series is the 1994 release from the Atlanta via Richmond, Virgina group Shadz Of Lingo. Shadz consisted of two MC's, Lingo M & Kolorado, and DJ Rocko. My first experiance, as I think anyone's that heard them during this time, was on Erick Sermon's debut solo LP, No Pressure (another personal favorite of mine) on the track Lil' Crazy that dropped in 93'. In 94' they dropped their debut and only LP A View To A Kill, that would have only moderate success, but is one of the better over looked hip hop albums from this era.
By no means was this a classic album in the general consenses, but for me, it got a lot of play. Both beats and MC's attracted me to this release. With Diamond D lending his hand to four tracks on the LP, that alone was almost worth the price of admission, and if I need to remind you what Diamond was doing During this era, then there is a little LP called Stunts, Blunts & Hip Hop released two years prior to this by Diamond that might give you an idea what kind of quality these four tracks are. The album kicks off with a Diamond beat on Different Stylez that gets the listener into the mood of some dope hip hop. With it's jazzy sax sample and vocal loop, this is one of the better Diamond beats I've heard and that's saying a lot. Erick Sermon produced only one track, the lead single Mad Flavaz, which sounds like most of the Funk Lords tracks during this time. E Double also drops the only guest apperance on the whole album on the track. Dallas Austin, who executive produced the album, also drops two tracks, both of which are suprisingly good. Wherez Da Steel is an Austin banger that utilizes a nice scream sample on the chorus that adds to the spazzed out track. But this track is also highlited by the dope flow Lingo M posses.
It's no secret that there were a lot of gimmicks being kicked around on the majority of hip hop releases in the 90's, Shadz were really no exception, introducing the "crossfade flow" to the world. It's not that they used it extensively on the album, but Lingo M drops it on numerous tracks on the album, but I've gotten used to it. Lingo seems to get the most shine on the album. He has one of the better voices and flow that I've heard, very unique in the grand scheme of things. He also has the presence on the mic to grab the listeners attention. This is evident on the short Pyschopathic Interlude that I used to know word by word, and is populated with some great one liners. Lingo M is definately the better MC, but Kolorado plays Phife to Lingo's Q-Tip. He's not bad by any of the sense of the imagination, but tends to get over shadowed by his rhyme partner.
As I said, the album isn't a classic by any means. It does have a few wink links here and there. Step 2 U Den is a jam for the honeys that is strictly filler. Ill & Get Clowned is kind of juevenile with it's approach and kind of a waste of a good Diamond beat. But tracks like Different Stylez, Mad Flavaz, Wherez Da Steel, Think I Give A F--K, Don't Test Da Skillz and Alwayz Stylin. It's a must in any heads collection and fairly easy to find still (I've seen quite a few in my neck of the woods) and fairly inexpensive, going for anywhere from 4-6 bucks for the CD and around 8-9 bucks on for the wax and can be found on E-bay.

Hip House Songs That Don't Suck Part 1: Chubb Rock - The Chubbster (Smooth Haus Remix)
Hip house gets the bozack. After the JB's hit with 'I'll House You', the third worst sub-genre in hip hop (behind Rap Metal and Crunk) wreaked terror on the average hip hop fan’s ears between 1989 and 1991. Still, while some rappers were completely playing themselves out with such wackness as ‘Turn this House into a Home’ (Craig G), ‘Come Into My House’ (Queen Latifah) and ‘Rock the House’ (Craig G again, what was he thinking?), a (very) small minority of house joints came out that weren’t just listenable but pretty damn good.In the first instalment of this 17-part series, we’ve got Chubb Rock’s certified dancefloor filler ‘The Chubbster’, given the house treatment by the Superman himself Clark Kent. Clark Kent remixed a bunch of joints off Chubb’s magnum opus The One (hands down the best album of all time), but this is the only track I know of that got the house treatment.
You could put Chubb Rock on a Lil Jon beat and I’d probably still like it, but there’s no denying Clark’s production effort here is extra slick. The beat on this is a lot more subdued than on most house songs and consequently the Big Man’s vocals actually work well on top of the track - the whole package is smooth and cohesive. Chubb Rock never had any problem flipping rhymes at speeds in excess of 100 BPM, and basically you should be embarrassed if you can’t recite this joint verbatim. In fact, this is something I would be happy to put on an eightball jacket and do the Steve Martin to, preferably with a girl wearing dolphin earrings. And in terms of appraising hip house joints, that’s just about as good as it gets.

Hurricane G - 1992's Tonights Da Night
That was the Hip Hop nation's introduction to the fiesty Puerto Rican mami that would go on to become a sort of "Fifth Beatle" in the Def Squad. She would appear on several Hit Squad/Def Squad afflilated projects, from Redman's "Tonight's Da Night" & "We Run N.Y." to Keith Murray's "Bom Bom Zee", which she always seemed to come the rawest and gave her best performances. She's also appeared on tracks with everyone from Smif N Wesson to Xzibit.
Around the mid 90's she disappeared from the Squad. Rumors of her being E Double's baby's mama might have had something to do with this. She reportedly had an album deal with Capitol in the early/mid 90's, but was a victim of a in house cleaning session resulting in G' to be dropped around 94'. In 97', she popped up back on the scene on the NYC independent H.O.L.A. (Home Of Latin Artists) and dropped All Woman to a rather lukewarm reception.
I was a rather big fan of the whole Hit Squad/Def Squad sound, as I mentioned in the previous "Knucklehedz" post, so when I saw this in a local record shop right when it came out, I immediately bought the album. Now, to say Hurricane G has an unique voice is an understatement. I must admit I was rather disappointed when I got the CD home and read through the linear notes and didn't see one Erick Sermon beat. New York producer Domingo, if I remember right, produced most of the album (I have since lost the album, only to have found it online not too long ago).
Needless to say, G' has always had a unique voice. I've always personally liked it, but it can be a little grating on a full album. I can't say this is a great album. Can't even really say it's a good album. There are some good songs (Wuteva, Coast To Coast and a even some of the spanish only songs sound pretty good), but some of the songs are too syruppy. I don't know if this because the head of the label was an early supporter of Madonna back in the day, or if they were trying to make G' into she was not, but some songs just don't fit her. The production also lacks in some areas.
I'm not sure what Hurricane G has been up to since this release. Every now and then she pops up on a release, most recently Tony Touch's The Piece Maker 2 in 2004.

WYDU Classics VOL 8, Aug 06'
It's the first of the month, and that means it's time for another edition of WYDU's classics. For those new visitors to our site, I'll explain again what exactly that means. From my early days of getting into music, I've always made "mixtapes" of sorts for my own listening pleasure. Not really mixed together in the traditional sorts, but I'd try to combine stuff with the ol' pause button mix. You older cats know where I'm coming from. I was always the one around the way to make tapes for friends because I was the one usually that had all the rare stuff, the remixes, the b-sides ect and most any major album that came out. And I enjoyed making tapes for friends. I'd always have a mix of known stuff then some stuff that the person I was making the tape for wasn't familar with, introduce them to something new. I still have boxes full of tapes I made. Greatest Hits tapes, monthly tapes, best of certain years...all kinds of tapes.
When the computer and CD burner came into the picture, that was even better, in a sense. I couldn't record over CD's but it was quicker to make a compilation. I usually make monthly CD's of newer tracks and stuff for myself to listen to. Well around the beginning of the year I was inspired by some of the stuff popping up on the Cocaine Blunts boards. People have been putting up their own made compilations. These include obscure tracks, remixes, b-sides, all the good stuff that peaks my interest. Stuff like the Lost and Found compilations, "Run Da Jewelz" series by my man Jaz and the Jason Gloss Chronicles from philaflava.com. Lot's of good stuff on these.
This all got me thinking. As good as these are, I wanted something for myself. Stuff that that was my shit back in the day. So I threw together a disk of tracks that got me going back in the day. For the past year or so, I've been more into the past than the present when it comes to Hip-Hop, so might as well have some stuff for me to listen to on the regular. I started making these January of this year. Then I made one for Febuary. From there, once a month, I'd make a new one. Needless to say, I got off on this type of thing. I figured I might as well share with the readers of this blog, and they seemed to go over pretty good orginally.As I said, these aren't "mixed" in any sense. I'd like to be able to mix them together right, either using a real DJ or some fancy mixing program for the computer, but I don't have access to either at this point in time. They're also were made with my own personal tastes basically in mind. It's stuff that I liked back in the day. Thanks to the net and most noteably, Cocaine Blunts, I've been re-acquiring alot of stuff that I loved back in the day, but lost. So most of these are kind more of the obscure type things (although not neccesarily rare or hard to find in an internet hip hop geek sort of way that I've found myself becoming). I have heard "Rebel Without A Pause" so many times in my life, I see no need to include it on these compilations. Instead, I've included stuff that isn't as popular by the masses, but made some sort of impact on me.

I was happy to finally find this little gem after having it on the maxi-single back in the day. Hard drums, a pissed of Ice Cube and Chuck D in his hey day. Of course, Run DMC always holds a special place in my heart for being the reason I got into hip hop.
2. Frankenstein's Pain- Frankenstein ( A-Side single b/w Peace & Quiet that dropped in 95)
If you've been reading since these first dropped, you will know I'm a big Frankenstein fan. This is the third song of his I've dropped on these since I've started. Just great production and something about his songs just grab me. Also appeared on a few other bootleg type projects, which I need to get around one of these days and post it up.
3. The Band Get's Swivey On The Wheels- Son Of Bazerk ( Appeared on the "Bazerk, Bazerk, Bazerk" album in 1991)
Another personal favorite. I've always been a sucka for Bomb Squad production and this was no different. Pure un-adulterated noise.
4. Check The Elevation- Tony D (dropped as a single in 91' and was on the "Droppin' Funky Beats" LP from the same year)
I hated this dude when I was a kid, just because I was a huge 3rd Bass fan, and the group and Tony had beef back in the day. Looking back at it, now, I realized I liked the song, but just didn't want to admit it. A over looked producer in the game for sure.
5. Jayou - Jurassic 5 (Was a single in 98' but first showed up on the 97 s/t EP)
This was the first time I ever heard Jurassic 5, and it was actually on the Lyrcist Lounge album. Needless to say, I went out and bought the EP. Just classic oldschool shit, and I don't mean the late 80's I'm talking Cold Crush, ect
6. Illusions- Cypress Hill (dropped as a single in 96', off the 95' LP "Temples Of Boom")
Not sure what it is about this song, but I've always loved it. Maybe it's because I was in a dark place in my life when this album dropped, but it's always been one of my favorite Cypress joints
7. One Eight Seven - Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg (was a b-side for the "Dre Day" EP, tape only in 92')
This is the sequal to the orginal "Deep Cover", same beats, same chorus, just different lyrics
8. Drive-By Miss Daisy - Compton's Most Wanted (on the 91' album "Straight Checkn' Em)
This dropped during my west coast gangsta fascination period. Some straight gangsta lyrics
9. Westcoast Slaughterhouse- Mack 10 feat Ice Cube & W.C. (appeared on Mack 10's debut s/t album)
Although it seemed they were taking shots at my favorite MC, Masta Ace (although they never mention him and I can't detect any subliminals), this joint was just hard as fuck to me. They did take shots and Common and kind of started that little war that lead to Common getting all up Cube's ass.
10. Comin' Like This- 2nd II None feat DJ Quik, Hi-C, AMG (featured on 2nd II None's S/T 91' album)
The 304's, I wished they would have done a whole album together. Every members album, they always did a posse track, and they were always fuckin' tight
11. Afro Puffs (extended version) - Lady Of Rage feat Snoop Dogg (dropped as a single in 94' on the Above The Rim OST)
I don't really know much about where this version came from, which is basically the same from what I remember except an added verse from Snoop and Dre dropping some commentary. I haven't the orginal forever since I lost my Above The Rim OST a while ago, so might not be right on everything.
12. The Renassiance - Amad Jamal (12" single dropped in 01' with three other songs)
I know very little about this guy except he dropped a couple singles in 01' and seemed to be tight with Evidence of Dialted and that clan. This song was produced by Joey Chavez who is also associated to them. I think I bumped into this in the old Audio Galaxy days. It's atight song, I wish he would have dropped more
13. Tekzilla- Common (unrelesed single that appeared as a white label around 00')
As far as I know, this was a joint that was supposed to be on Hi-Tek's album, but couldn't be cleared because of sample issues. Tight ass beat, probably my all-time favorite Hi-Tek beat. My copy is scratched to hell, so excuse the skips
14.Logistics 101- Louis Logic (appeared as a three song single with Planet Rock & Punchline in 98')
I've always been a big Louis Logic fan as well. This is, I think, his first single. Pure lyrics, kind of reminescent of early Eminem
15. Rush Ya Clique- Outsidaz feat Eminem (on the "Night Life" EP from 99)
Speaking of early Eminem, here is a spot of him on the Outsidaz track. Some rare hard NY shit from 99'
16. Pardon Me- Dres (dropped as a 12" in 98, then appeared on his solo debut "Sure Shot Redemption" in 99')
Being a big Black Sheep fan, I had to buy this when it dropped. This is the best song on the album, but some nice boom bap
17. The Orginators- The Jaz feat Jay-Z (Single from the "To Your Soul" album from 90')
Early Jay-Z and the EXTREMELLY underrated The Jaz. This is a classic that I never heard nearly enough.
18. Ain't Nothin' To It- K9 Posse (Groups debut single that dropped in 88' then followed by the s/t album)
Call this one of my guilty pleasures. One of my orginal wave of hip hop purchases after seeing it on YoMTV Raps.
