I was hoping to get in a legit post either today or yesterday, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen. Tomorrow, more than likely, I will post up the third part of the part Bootlegger series, or maybe I'll do another "So Corny, They're Good" post, which was started ages ago with Kwame (I have an artist in mind). None the less, I'm posting the request reminder up today because Friday is looking like it could be a busy day, plus I'm not sure if I'll be able to check anything Friday morning, so I can only guarantee I'll see a request that gets posted before about 5pm my time Thursday.

In 1995, the duo of Yusef Afloat & Nouka Basetype released their highly slept-on longplayer World Ultimate, an album fuelled by the laidback flavor that undoubtedly influenced later left-coast groups like People Under the Stairs, Visionaries etc. Although some of the album’s tracks like ‘Mixtapes’ turned a few heads, the group didn’t make a big impact and I figured they had become another victim of the industry until I saw this underrated EP in a store back in 1998.
Stylistically, The Sight of Things follows on (for the most part) right where World Ultimate finished. If you’re looking for some joints that are gonna get you rowdy in the club, look elsewhere. The Nonce are all about making you relax. A lot of cats that attempt ‘laid back’ hip hop usually achieve only in sending the listener to sleep. On the EP’s best tracks like ‘The Greatest MC’s’ and ‘The Sight of Things’ however, The Nonce have it both ways. The binding of the rappers’ slippery flows to their self-produced bumping beats results in relaxing music which doesn’t tread into monotony. ‘Checkbook’, which deals with folk who let their ends (or lack of) get the better of them is another track that gets props.
The only times the record falters is when The Nonce attempt grittier, less jazzy production like on ‘Turnin’ it Out’ and ‘Articulate With Math’. Both sound uncomfortable, and suggest that the group would have been wise to stick with what they do best. Everyone has to experiment sometimes I guess, but on an EP-length release there’s no room for error.
Still, this is a fine EP sure to please any fans of underground west coast hip hop. Tragically, Yusef Afloat was murdered a couple of years after this release. A couple of posthumous Nonce albums appeared last year: Advanced Regression & The Right State of Mind, neither of which I have either seen or even heard.

Trick-O-Treat....Hades Weekend Requests.
I ain't going to lie, I know very little about other countries cultures. I guess I'm one of those "arrogant" Americans that thinks the world revolves around us. But this weekend is a reason for us older "kids" to act stupid, dress up in costums and get drunk here in the states. Halloween weekend. As far as drinking and partying goes, I'd rank it up in the top 5 drinking holidays along with St. Patricks Day, Cinco De Mayo, New Years Eve, and Fat Tuesday during Mardi Gras. Like I said, it's just something for us Americans to get dressed up and act stupid and this coming weekend should be a doozy. My best friend is coming into to town and thats usually good enough for a potential night in the clink. Throw the usual trouble him and I get into together on top of the Halloween weekend, when I always have a gang of weird shit happen to me, and the potential for the need of me setting up a donation link on here for bail is pretty high. For whatever reason, weird shit always happens to me on this weekend. Some past highlites include:
---running from cops during a party in high school dressed up as Run from Run DMC, complete with fake gold ropes and everything. I got away, only to spend the next hour hiding in a garage in the back of a beat up car with another dude....not fun
---Having sex with "Pocahontas". I mean, how often do you get to have sex with a Disney character? Never did find out her real name.
---Dressing up as the "UnaBomber" complete with a box and everything and some cat catching feelings over it in a club. Bouncers were needed and cops were called. Yours truly slipped out of his costum during the melay and walked away with out problems.
---Trying to get a buddy of mine laid by a 45 y/0 lady only to have him wuss out, leave me in the cab with said lady so she can attempt to rape me....(she wasn't all that and I wasn't drunk enough)
---I remember always buying hip hop tapes during the day before heading out that night so I would have something to listen to. I remember picking up Ice Cube - Death Certificate and playing that shit over and over again. Picked up DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince -And In This Corner... (Don't act like y'all didn't like the Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff back in the day) one year. Another year was Candyman's "Ain't No Shame In My Game", the same year I dressed up as Run. Got WC & The Madd Circle - Ain't A Damn Thing Changed another year. This about the time my friends were starting to get out of hip hop, but I thought this was the shit. I was a huge fan of Low Profile so I was happy to see this.
---Last year at my hispanic friend's Dia De Los Muertos party, sitting down w/ his mexican neighbors, who didn't know much English, with four others and drinking a bottle of Patron' and a half of jug of Tequilla (not a 5th, but one of those bigger bottles) and speaking Spanish with them for more than an hour. Funny thing is, my only experiance with Spanish (besides working in numerous restruants through out my years) was about a month of it in the 9th grade before getting kicked out of the class. That was 18 years ago (Yeah, dating myself here). I was convinced I knew how to speak great spanish by the end of the night.
That's where I'm starting off things tomorrow day at about 1p.m., at my friends Dia De Los Muertos party, then wherever the night may take us. Good times, and I need a weekend like this with all the other crap going on right now.
Well I was going to cover some other rants I had going on in my mind, but you ain't here for that, so I'll save those for another time. It's time to fill some requests. Thanks to my girl friend who give me a call to tell me what you guys had requested so I could pull it out of my stash out home since I don't have any internet at the moment. Hardly anyone remembers that Big Ill had the balls to dis Kane at Kane's OWN birthday party back in the day. I had the sonofabitch on tape. I would kill to get a copy of that tape again. If anyone is familar with the freestyle Masta Ace did at the end of a song on "Slaughtahouse", that was during Kane's birthday and the same night Ill dissed Kane. Bootleg of the Bootleggers Part 2: Grap Luva "The Younger Soul Brother"
Grap Luva got his start in hip hop dancing for his older cousin, other wise known as the Over Weight Lover, Heavy D. This was about the same time his brother, Pete Rock, started doing his thing as well. Coming from a heritage of Hip Hop artists, you know dude was going to emerge in the game soon or later. Too bad it was more later than sooner.
By now, you should all know of the infamous InI album "Center of Attention", made with Rob O, Marco Polo and produced by Pete himself. Well, unfortunately, it got held up in the whole Elektra ordeal and never got a proper release. Slowly, tracks started leaking to the mixtape DJ's (remember this is all before the internet) and soon enough, the album started to be bootlegged by various outlets. I picked up my copy in 2001 (before the BBE release) at none other than the Hip Hop Site Vegas store.
This is possibly one of my favorite albums of all-time. I even go as far to say that I enjoy this album more than both of the Pete Rock & CL Smooth LP's (I know BLASHPHEMY). Grap played a vital role in the album, handling a lot of the vocals. The album did finally get released in 04' as the Lost & Found Pete Rock albums with Deda The Baby Pa.
Grap can handle his own for sure, but always sounds better on his brothers beats, evidence in the recentley released "Record Collector" 12inch in 04' and this years Japan only release "Revenge". Grap does hit the boards himself though, and honestly isn't all that shabby either. Not much news on his future endevours, but he makes sightings from time to time appearing on others projects, such as Kev Brown and the such.
This little bootleg collection of Grap songs is something I found on Soulseek the beginning of 04' so nothing newer than that really, but some good tracks if you are into the whole InI/Pete Rock flavor.

This blog is mainly for my love of the rare & out of print Hip Hop, but since it's my blog, I can use it for whatever the hell I want to use it for. Well, we are going to use this for some self promotion for the other Co-Founder of this blog, my man Polarity. Hopefully this okay with him, but I want to point out that my Veggie eatin', backwards toliet flushin' partner is one hell of a producer. He is also one half of the Australian group Low Budget that just dropped an album that I think is pretty damn good. Good enough to mention on this blog and try to get my man some more Australian Peso's or whatever the fuck they use for money down there.
Now I know it's going to sound like I'm just dick ridin' here, but in all honesty even if I didn't know this cat and run a blog with him I'd be highly impressed with this effort. It has nothing to do with my getting a shout out in the liner notes (I'm so damn proud of that, I'm swear going to parlay that into some sort of groupie effort some day.)
Polarity has the kind of beats that are soulful, but not necessarily the overkill of soul beats found lately on a lot of releases. He has an ear for music and in turn runs beautiful loops and soulful basslines together to form an unique sound. He is also becoming very talented at cutting shit up and using nice sampled hooks, ala Primo. And get this, he actually CUTS on songs....it's amazing. I didn't know a DJ did those kind of things. How often does the DJ get his own track nowadays? Well my Po' does, and he's killin' it.
The MC (who I don't know personally) is pretty nice on the mic as well to make a nice tag team. I know as an American, we can be kind of harsh on foreign MC's, because of the speech, accent, ect, but once you get used to the accent, you can tell his rather nice with the vocab. Actually, after you get used to the accent, it kind of adds to the whole package.
You can check out cuts on their myspace page posted up top there, give it a listen (personally I think "Handle Ours" is some dope as shit) and if you like it, you can pick it up here. The rest of the world needs to jump on this, because these guys are like the freaking Beatles in Australia. Pretty soon, they won't be opening up for the U.S. Tours over there, the U.S. groups will be opening up for them....so tell your moms you heard them here first, on WYDU...you won't be sorry.

Bootleg of the Bootleggers, Part One: Frankenstein's Return
One of the elements of hip hop should be the bootleggers as well. Since hip hop first started gaining fame, the bootleggers have been out there, trying to get the quick buck. One of the first tapes I ever bought was a bootlegged "Rhyme Pays" that had the writing on the tape come off within the first four listens.
Well as the industry has evolved, so has the bootlegging game. They always seem to be one step ahead of the game. Just look at the blogs out there, they have pretty much any new and upcoming album weeks or even months before the offical release of an album.
Bootlegs can take form in many different forms and ways. Some bootlegs are just straight up rips of an artists album, some can be actually put out by the artist himself. With the age of the internet, a lot of so called "bootlegs" are just compliations put together by the computer/backpacker nerd sitting on his home computer (calm down theFrare Poindexter, I'm guilty of myself). Some of these "bootlegs" actually make the rounds around the internet as fairly significant collections of some artists who aren't exactly to trace all their work. That's the kind of bootleg's I'll be concentrating on for the next few days. They aren't offical (as far as I know) so if you are one of those cats that has to have the record catalog number, label, and year, these won't have anything like that, but some collections of good tracks.

If you've been following my "WYDU Classics" you will know I'm a huge fan of this man's production. This T.Dot producer/MC is one of the more underrated cats in the game in my humble opinion. Frankie Ano aka Frank Fallico aka Frankenstein first dropped his first single in 94' and by 95' he had his "Knowledge Of Self" label that he dropped numerous 12" singles along with his only "Offical" LP, the UV album, which was more of an EP with some of his tracks and instrumentals. He also had a white label album "Live From New York Remix Album" the same year back in 97'. Some of his remixes for artists (unoffical remixes) are so dope that cats should have been checkin' for his production skills back then instead of messing with some of the crap that was out there.
I'm not sure what it is about Frank's sound that is so appealing to me, but he definately has a "sound" to his beats that are very compelling to me. I first heard him on a Salt Lake City hip hop radio show when they played "The Rain Is Gone" back in 98'. Immediately I was fiendin' for this track. Luckily enough I had the tape deck recording that night and that tape became a prized possesion. The only problem though, was that I didn't know who he was and at that point in time, if I didnt know who an artist was, it was sure that no one else that I knew would know who he was and this was before the internet really took off (it's crazy, but true, we didn't have the internet to look up all this shit back in those days...and I walked up hill in the snow both ways to school). The internet did pay off in the form of these blogs about a year ago, I ran into someone that posted up some tracks and "The Rain Was Gone" was one of them.
Since that day I've been on a mission to acquire any track he may have had a hand in. I have no clue what dude is up to these days. According to Werner Von Wallenrod's Humble Little Hip Hop Site, he appeared on an guest apperance on a DJ JS1 track called "Strange To The Eye" back in 04' which is news to me. Actually there is quite of bit of stuff I don't have by him on that site, so if some of you have anything, let me know....Peace....

Grand Daddy I.U. - Lead Pipe: In Which Polarity Recycles An Old Review He Had to Write to Pass College…
If you’ve perused the used hip hop section of your local record store recently, there’s a high chance you’ve seen a copy of Lead Pipe (or maybe even a few copies) sitting there gathering dust. Albums with such a ubiquitous presence in the second hand racks can generally be thrown onto one of two piles. In the first are the overlooked gems that have never gotten their due respect (Brand Nubian’s Foundation, for instance). In the second, the junk which surely no sane listener could ever want polluting their music collection (atrocious kiddie Miami Bass rappers The Puppies anyone?) So where in the spectrum does Lead Pipe fall?
Grand Daddy I.U. was one of the last members of the Juice Crew / Cold Chillin’ empire to release an album, dropping the superb Biz Markie-produced Smooth Assassin in 1990. For whatever reason, his sophomore effort Lead Pipe didn’t come out until four years later, by which time the laid-back suit-wearing pimp attitude that personified Smooth Assassin had been succeeded by rowdy thugs rocking jeans, hoodies and Timberlands.
In an attempt to compete with the Black Moons, Onyxes, Biggies and Wu Tang Clans running the east coast scene in 1994, Daddy completely switched up his steez. Whereas on his debut he was dappered in silk suits and lyrically outmacking contemporaries such as Big Daddy Kane and King Sun, here he’s tipping back forty ounces, swinging the eponymous lead pipe (with his name painted on it!) and cooking up creative song titles such as ‘We Got Da Gats’ and ‘Represent’.
The success of Grand Daddy’s attempts at mid-nineties style ruggedness are mixed. The aforementioned ‘Represent’ features a predictably shouty hook before the beat (self-produced, like the majority of the album) breaks down to a smoother horn-tinged instrumental that is well suited to I.U.’s vocal tone. Unfortunately, lyrics such as ‘The only remains is blood stains, spilt brains and broke bones / You step in my face with the gauge you get smoked homes’ are far from convincing, especially when followed by thoroughly preposterous lines like ‘My skills are nastier than a fart after eatin’ a raw egg’ (?!)
On the record’s nadir ‘We Got Da Gats’, Daddy does his ‘best’ impersonation of Onyx, switching his voice and pulling overused lyrics like ‘I smoke so many niggas my gun got cancer’ out of his cliché cache. ‘Dead Men Don’t Talk’, meanwhile, is memorable only for biting both Kool G Rap and Das EFX in a single verse.
Lead Pipe does have its moments though, and occasionally recaptures the magic of Smooth Assassin. ‘As I Flow On’, ‘Don’t Stress Me’ and ‘Da Real Mack’ are all smooth jams that veer just on the right side of cheesiness as I.U. flexes his ‘vocal tone that’s smooth just like Barry White’. The contrast of songs like these against junk like ‘We Got Da Gats’ and ‘Slinging Bass’ just goes to highlight the shortcomings of the majority of the album.
The only skippable song on Smooth Assassin was ‘Gals Dem So Hot’ an ill-advised attempt at ragga. I guess no-one told I.U. his singing sucks, because Lead Pipe features not one but two similarly wretched Jamaican crossovers, ‘Boom Wha Dat’ and ‘Time To Die’ which further dilute the potency an already mediocre album.
In other words, there’s a reason why 95% of the copies of Lead Pipe manufactured are dying a slow death in used music stores around the world. With the exception of a handful of tracks, this album sucks, and rightfully flopped commercially. I.U. kept a real low profile for the next 10 years, producing a couple of tracks on Heltah Skeltah’s equally horrific sophomore slump Magnum Force in 1998 and not much else. However, despite the played-out title, his ‘I Be Thuggin’ b/w ‘Mack of the Year’ single released last year was a very fine return to form and is hopefully indicative of good things for the future.

Stones Throw Records has been one of the premier independent hip hop labels for more than a little while now. Although nowadays its roster seems to consist nearly exclusively of Loot Pack weed carriers (and their weed carriers), the founder of the company, Peanut Butter Wolf, put out a bunch of dope records in the mid-to-late 90’s before his untimely retirement. Most of you should be familiar with the long-unreleased album he recorded with deceased partner Charizma and his acclaimed solo joint My Vinyl Weighs a Tonne. This week, however, we’ve got his under-appreciated Step on Our Egos EP released not on Stones Throw, but on the small San Fran South Paw label.
Anyone familiar with the man formerly known as Chris Manak will know that he’s no slouch on the beats. The production on this 6-track record is great. ‘That’s Word’ is a slamming uptempo jam featuring the aforementioned Charizma’s unique delivery and humor. The beat change at the end of the track provides added flavor.
‘Think Twice’ featuring Encore is the best joint on the EP. A subdued piano beat with a well-flipped Donald Byrd sample on the hook is the perfect setting for Encore to tell an excellently constructed story of a house party gone wrong. Encore’s complex wordplay works a lot better on subdued production like this than the beats he was messing with on his so-so last album.
‘Underbomber Theories’ by Subcontents is a kinda weak spot on the record. The beat’s cool, but rappers Dave Dub and especially Persevere just aren’t able to harness it into anything memorable. Fortunately ‘Max Mode’ featuring 50 Grand (the one from Homeliss Derilex not Keith Murray’s crew) picks up the slack and is another highlight. 50 Grand is dope too, I gotta get that HD album that came out last year sometime.
The last two songs on the EP both suffer from what I like to call ‘Producer Album Syndrome’. The main symptom of this disease is the coupling of inspired beats with mediocre lyricism. Unfortunately Clept’s analysis of the wackness of mainstream hip hop, ‘Rappers Delight II’ and Zest the Smokers ode to the green ‘My Old Nasty Habit’ both fall far short of PB’s blunted production on each track.
Overall, Step on Our Egos is an excellent display of Peanut Butter Wolf’s skills as a producer and with a couple of different guest selections it could have been classic material.

Friday Request Day

Us west coasters, alright, midwest for me I guess, are just now getting off of work or school and heading toward your favorite Happy Hour bar and starting the weekend off with a bang. Unless you're me and stuck at work for another four hours then have a weekend full of studying for mid-terms, then this is just the gate way day to a miserable weekend. Oh fucking well.....

Honestly I've never heard this album. I always kind of liked him on "The Chronic", but I wasn't sure I'd like him on a whole album by himself. From what I remember, he was feuding with Dre when this came out as well. I guess we'll find out if this is worth a download or not.

Ak is some what of an acquired taste. If this came out when I was 18-20, it would have been a classic to me (I can't tell you how many 18 y/o girls I've heard sing "Put It Inn Your Mouth"). The subject matter does get a little old to me now a days, but it's still good for those "special moments" as well.

I grabbed this CD out of tower this morning, got it to work and realized that for some reason instead of "Put Your Boots On", I had Ruff, Rugged & Raw in it instead. Hopefully "Boots..." is in that case. A quick check of albumbase and no harm done. This is a classic in my book. Just pure hardrock beats and rhymes. I'd name songs, but nearly the whole damn album is good, so get this if you don't have it.

This is some classic Boston hip hop. Made up of Jaysaun, XL, Big Juan, & DJ/Producer G-Squared, these cats have been around for awhile. Jaysaun was down with the orginal Gangstarr Foundation back as early as 88'. This is definately worth downloading. Jaysaun also teams up with Edo G to form the Special Teamz that should be dropping an album some time in the near future and if their mixtape is any indication, it should be pretty nice.

Bass music hit kind of a corny period around this time, with little corny songs. Don't get me wrong, I liked them, but stuff like L'Trimms "Boom I Got Your Boyfriend" and Gucci Creew II's "Sally, That Girl", and this groups "B Girls", their was more corn than an Iowa field.

This was everyone's holy grial for the longest time. It was a rare classic up until about a year ago, when this whole blog/internet thing took off. I happen to find mine on Soulseek about a year ago. Not enough could be said about this lost gem, other than it's fucking dope. I've heard rumors that it could be re-released next year, so keep an eye out for that. If anyone has the two missing instrumental tracks (Notes?) tag them up.

I know I said I didn't know much about old school southern hip hop, but Raheem happens to be one of the few that I followed back then. He happens to be one of the orginal Ghetto Boy members (the orginal spelling) and tight with Rap-A-Lot (his second album "The Invincible" would drop on the label). I hated this dude, but liked his music. He disses Cool J, who at this moment in time (88') was one of my favorite MC's and you know how 9th, 10th graders in high school are at that time, it's like dissing your favorite team. But I sitll listened to his music. This album has more of a NY sound to it than the southern flavor, it's when everyone thought they had to imiatate NY to make it.
