WYDU Classics, remember those things? Sure you do, probably the only reason you hang around here anymore. Hoping they would make a comeback. Well the waiting is over. Sure, it's a month late, but here are those classics back to appease that appetite of the old school goodness for the month of January. I was in kind of an obscure mood, plus I downloaded a lot of stuff I wasn't really familiar over the past couple months (big shout outs to TROY and where ever else I downloaded this stuff from). Some goodies on here, I highly suggest the 108 Dragons, Nothern Exposure and the People Without Shoes.

WYDU Classics Nov 09: WYDU Invented The Remix Vol 3

I love me a good remix, which is where the fresh off of hiatus WYDU Classics picks up this month (actually November). We've done a couple WYDU Invented The Remix volumes in the past and figured it's time for another since I'm in a remix kinda mood. I went back through the past two (Here and Here) and tried to pick remixes that haven't been covered yet, and I missed the Ice T, but too late now as it's already uploaded and ready to go.
We have everything from fairly well known remixes such as the extremely dope Positive K "Nightshift" remix, to even Naughty's "It's On" that was remixed by the Beatnuts has seen plenty of love on the nets since the blog explosion. The others might be a little harder to come across, such as the Tim Dog "Bronx N*gga" Blue Note remix, and surprisingly, this is one of the first times I can recall hearing the DJ Quik remix of Hi-C's "I'm Not Your Puppet" and I found it on my hard drive, go figure. Couple I don't know much about. Trying to figure out what remix that is for "Hell On Earth", The Vinyl Reanimators? Anyone, anyone, Bueller, Bueller? The Shabazz The Disciple joint, "Crime Saga," is one of those joints I'm not even sure I've heard the original, which might be cheating, but it's a dope song none the less. Also be sure to check the DJ Eclipse remix for OC's "Born 2 Live", as he takes a song I wasn't all that big on and turned it into a dope ass joint. Not much getting into them, just download and enjoy!

WYDU Classics Aug 09

Looks like I'm playing catch up with the monthly WYDU Classics series. We'll drop last month's today and hopefully I'll get caught up this week with September's release. This month is some tracks I've been bumping lately and thought would sound good together on a "tape". Some tight remixes from Eric B & Rakim as well as KRS kick things off. A highly overlooked "Karma" track from DJ Hi-Tek's group, Mood. It seems like I got carried away with Philly and Jersey artists as each location is represented heavily on this month's issue. I'll let the music do the talking for the rest

WYDU Classics July 09: Ladies First Edition

Still in a holding pattern with the move. No internet, no computer desk, no computer as of yet. So I'm trying to get things up as I go, but I really dislike just throwing up the same ole thing everyone else is. It goes against every principle I had when I started this blog. But it's neither here or there right about now. I'm hoping to have everything up and running and have "WYDU Offices" ready to go by next week.
Until then, we keep on catching up with the WYDU Classics that we fell a little behind with. This month errrr, July features nothing but the ladies. I'll admit, I've slept on the ladies through the history simple because I didn't see them as equals to their male counterparts when it came to spittin' on the mic. I've since seen the error of my ways and enjoy many female classics. These songs represent some of those tracks. I'm missing a few of my favorites, since my CDs and vinyl are still packed up, so I was left to the devices found on my computer. None the less, some classics.....

WYDU Classics June 09
What's good y'all. It's already August? No shit? Wow, this year is going by fast. Before you know it, the leaves will be turning, the air will be a changin' and football will be on the big screen. I can't fucking wait.
This week is going to be tricky. I moved to a new townhouse over the weekend, but still don't have internet. I need to put together the computer desk I bought as well as get the internet hooked up, all this while working 40-50 hours this week at my nine to five. So not sure how that is going to effect the blog. I'll try to stay on track, but it's hard to say how this week will go. I gotta make sure I get the new WYDU office set up (meaning my spare bedroom).
It's a good time to catch up on the WYDU Classics that I've missed for June and July. We'll play catch up and get Augusts up as well. For this one, June's, it's just really a bunch of stuff I've downloaded else where that I've really enjoyed. Pretty much all the tracks on here are of the somewhat obscure and fairly new to myself so I'm not going to go to deep into their histories all that much. Just download and listen, most everything is from the 90's.....

WYDU Classics May 09: WYDU Loves The 80's

I got a bunch of stuff going on the next few days, so while I'll try to stay up with the site, I'm not totally sure how it's going to turn out. I also realized I forgot to put up a WYDU Classics for May, so I thought this is a good of time as any to do that. Don't worry June will be up sometime this month as well.
I've been on a big 80's kick, since reading the Run DMC book that was written by Ronin Ro. I realize that the more time passes, the more the 80's sound is dated, but I don't care, it's still probably my favorite decade of hip hop. Just raw break beats and kick drums. It was hip hop in it's purest essence (while it's been on vinyl). So I had to dedicate this month to some of the 80's music that I had laying around. Some classics and some rare gems litter this month's collection. Everyone from radio DJs, Mr. Magic and Chuck Chillout appear this month. The legendary Fab 5 Freddy has a track on here as well. Nine in his original group, Deuces Wild makes an appearance. You have classics from Run DMC, Whodini and the original incarnation of Public Enemy and a young(er) Chuck D with the Spectrum City crew, which most of you I'm sure already knew. Some fairly obscure singles in The Tall Dark & Handsome and Bennetton Gang tracks, which are both typical 80's track, which means they are dope. Early stuff from BDP and Mister Baby Got Back himself, Sir Mix-A-Lot. If you are a fan of the 80's and don't have most of this, this is a collection you'll have to check out.....
Thanks to the sites I know I got a few tracks from, Will C., Philaflava, Jesse Serwer, and whoever I might have missed...

WYDU Classics March 09: The Spring Break Edition

It's that time of the year again, spring break time. Millions of drunken college kids invade warm places for plentiful booze, sex and all out craziness. Now that I'm a little past that age, I'd like to think I've "grown up" a bit, but I'm still aware of the countless college kids that visit WYDU. Hip Hop is a young man's game, so in order to celebrate the month of March and the spring break that accompanies the month, WYDU style., with classic tracks from the not so distant past all the way back to the late 80's.
I did the same thing back in 2007, which you can still catch. The link might not be good, but I'm pretty sure there is an active link somewhere on the blog for it. It's amazing what two years can do for you. Two years ago, I was living in Denver, and I was drinking quite a bit. I didn't need an excuse to drink, I could grab a 12 pack and bring it home. I'd start writing on the blog and before you know it, the 12 pack would be gone. I can still go through this blog and laugh at the posts that I wrote drunk. Don't get me wrong, I had several partners in crime while living in Denver. Many drunken nights at Rockies games, many drunken nights running from the bars to catch the last light rail train of the night (only to puke all over Evans Station), and just ask CH Commish about playing beer pong with me and my numerous rants through out that night (I still hate Sid Bream). Two years later though, I've mellowed. I still like some beers, but no longer can I polish off a 12 pack without much thought. I still go out about once a month or so and drink enough to remind why I don't do it much anymore.
Regardless of my old age kicking in, nothing like a tossing a few cold ones and what better way to enjoy some cold ones than with some quality music. This collection of alcohol themed music is kinda different from the one from two years ago. The one from two years ago contained mostly classics, either to me or to the average hip hop head. This collection, while having a few "classics" is mostly some rare and obscure joints. I hope they become the new "Classics" for some kid out there while he is getting ready to head out for the night. I hope it's the soundtrack for some late night "asshole" games, or gets played at some BBQs. Trust me, there is some good shit to be found on this one.....
I kinda broke this up into a "start of the night" stage, a "middle of the night" stage and an "end of the night" stage
Act One: The Start
You know how it is, the jump off. You are getting ready, thinking about the endless possibilities that lay ahead for the night. You then head to a friend's house. You might toss a few back at his crib while you play playstation or whatever. Then you head to the bars. If you were like me, you got there early and went to the local hole in the wall first for some beers.

1. King Tee - Drunk Tekneek (From: Tha Trifflin' Album, 1993)
I had to put it on this one to make up for missing it the last time around. Classic jam all the way around.
2. Lexicon - Party Party People (From: Youth Is Yours, 2003)
I remember hearing this track a few times back when it dropped, but forgotten about it until recently. A classic bar track, great for playing before heading out, hoping your night goes like the story in this song.
3. YZ - Drink at the Bar (From: The Ghetto's Been Good To Me, 1993)
I'd consider this a borderline classic, although I never owned the CD in my party years. Figured this would be another song to get me "warmed" up for the night.
4. Lordz of Brooklyn - Saturday Night Fever (From: All In The Family, 2005)
I was never the biggest Lordz of Brooklyn fan, to me they were kinda of House of Pain rip-offs. But this song was a cool song to get you pumped. Anyone got the Kenny Dope remix, hook me up.
5. Lord Finesse - Party Over Here (Remix) (From: Party Over Here 12 Inch)
This is the remix, which was different from the album version, although it has Showbiz, who also did the original. Not really about drinking, but it was a "get the party started" type of track.
6. ALT & Lost Civilization - Tequila (From: Timebomb, 1992)
I'm not usually big on remix of old rock songs (we are talking OLD rock songs), but this was kinda of a cool track and "Tequila" in it's original form was a favorite of mine. Kinda of bites the Spice 1 concept of naming characters of a story after alcoholic beverages.
Act II: The Middle of the Night
You know how it goes usually, after the cheap ass "hole in the wall" places, you head to where all the action is. Now, I haven't lived in a city that hasn't had a main focal place for bars. You know the spot. If the town has a college in it, then it's even more pronounced. That's where you go when you are a youngin'. There's women, booze, and it's the place to be seen. You know that it's where all the action will take place, where the memories will be made....

7. Diversion Tactics - Pubs, Drunks & Hip Hop (From: Pubs, Drunk, & Hip Hop LP)
How can you not have a collection of drinking songs without a song that is named "Pubs, Drunks, & Hip Hop". The crew is out of the UK, and I only knew of them because J-Zone and the Old Maid Billionaires did some stuff with them, but this track is worthy of being on here.
8. Mighty Casey - Liqourland (From: The EP, 2000)
Part of the indie boom of the late 90's/early turn of the century, this joint was one of those that I stumbled across during my napster/audio galaxy days. It quickly became a classic for those drunken nights.
9. Mr. X & Mr. Z - Drink Old Gold (From: 12 Inch single, 1987)
Still a classic after all these years. You should really know this and if you don't then familiarize yourself with it.
10. Big Daddy Kane - 3 Forties & a Bottle of Moet (From: Daddy's Home, 1994)
Kane does the crazy drunken style, like you should be doing after about four hours of drinking.
11. Das EFX - 40 & a Blunt (From: Hold It Down, 1995)
"All I wanna do is smoke a blunt and drink some fuckin' brew". Is there anything else you need in a song when you are drinking?
12. Erule - Rum & Coke (From: Cold Currentz, 2000?)
Erule captures the essence of club hopping, which every spring breaker does sometime on their trip.
13. Lord Sear - Alcoholic Vibes (From: 12 Inch Single, 1997)
Drunkin' funk from Lord Sear.
14. Baritone Tiplove - Turn Up The Bottle (From: Livin' Foul, 1991)
This would have been a classic if the album it was on had reached more cats. Phill The Soulman is hilarious on this track.
15. Tha Alkaholiks - Hip Hop Drunkies (Vinyl Reanimators Remix)
A different version of an old favorite
16. Javier & the Str8jackers - Pass Me Da 40oz (From: The Hard Way, 1991)
I wasn't aware of this album until I found it on Bust The Facts, but this track got some play during those drunken nights in Denver.
17. Drunken Hoodlumz - 20 Forties & 40 Blunts (From: Drunken Hoodlumz Presents Blunts, Beats & Brew, 1997)
It's only an instrumental track, but so what? You should know what sample they use just from the song's title. Drunk funk music, that end of the night music that they start playing at the bar to get your asses out of there.
18. Kage - Pass Me A 40 (From: Everyday Thangs, 1994)
If you were like me, once you got kicked out of the bars (either by the fact it was closing time, or other means) you went straight to the corner store and picked up more beer. Usually it was a 40 in the younger years, and usually you'd find a 3/4 full 40 sitting next to you on the couch when you woke up the next morning.
Act III: The End
After the bars are closing, you stumble back to your ride (which hopefully you have a DD, be smart, you are not invincible) and end up at a friends crib. You would usually drink some more, although you didn't really need to. You play more video games (Mortal Kombat was my shit back in the days) and pass out on the couch.

19. Louis Logic - Dos Factotum (From: Sin-A-Matic, 2003)
Part two of a CLASSIC drinking song. This one is just as good, and reminds me of stumbling around, being way too drunk.
20. Little Shawn - Dom Perignon (From: New York Undercover EP, 1995)
If you got lucky, you went home with a lady friend. That is if you didn't get too drunk and make a fool of yourself (I did that often). You need some bubbly once you get her back to your crib or hotel room if you are on spring break. And you need some seduction music. This is as close as it gets to Barry White.
21. Rehab - Sittin' At The Bar (2008 Remix) (From: Sittin' At A Bar, 2008 although the original appeared on Southern Comfort, 2000)
Not sure how "hip hop" this is, but it does have a some spitting lyrics in over the bridge. It's one of those end of the night sing-a-long songs. Fortunately, this is one of the few things I can say never happened to me after a night of drinking, and if it happens to you, shit's over.

WYDU Classics Feb 09

Since the month of February is almost in the record books and I haven't posted a volume of WYDU's Classics for it, I figured I better sneak this in while I can. Like most of the WYDU Classics, there is really no theme other than some tracks that I've been diggin lately or have been wanting to hear again.
Seems like I was on a remix kick this month, although it wasn't really intentional. Phat Kat, who is among my favorites from the Detroit area, comes correct on "Dedication To The Suckers", an old Audio Galaxy favorite of mine from back in the day. It's also an early Jay Dee aka J Dilla beat. A Dope remix can be found for "Sobb Story", one of my favorite tracks from LONS first album and the remix is just as good and if not better. There are also dope remixes of "Catch A Bad One" from Del, "That's When You Lost" from Souls. Heiro always had remixes on their singles and they were always up to par. Former Source "Unsigned Hype" alum, Legion of Dume drop an ill track on "Sons of Sam". Too bad that group didn't take off, although if I remember right, Darc Mind who dropped a album a year or two ago was part of that crew. A soulful, rag-time version of "Ain't Got No Class" shows up from Da Lench Mob. I was a BIG fan of Lench Mob's first album, simply from the production. This track wouldn't have fit on there, but it's still pretty nice. There are some obscure tracks floating around on this as well. That Mood Swingaz track, "The Blessed", is a great track. It's nothing new, but the beat and the MC all fit together so well.
Enough talking, check it out and I'll be back this weekend with some new Spotlights and I'll have the WYDU Top 20 Chart up early next week....

WYDU Classics Jan 09: The Various Artists Edition

The hip hop compilation has been around since the beginning of time. It's kind of the bastard child of the mixtape. I remember buying the cheap ass K-Tel compilations from back in the day, basically because they were easy to come by and they provided some music that I didn't get to hear very readily because of my location. They would just jack whatever tracks where hot at the time and throw them on a tape. Over time though, some of the would become specialized, provide only exclusives and unreleased stuff. Those particular releases could contain some prized gems, or they could be full of half assed crap that a particular artist didn't want to release on his own projects.
This month's WYDU Classic focuses on some of those hidden gems and just some of my personal favorites from a small, small, small sampling of "Various Artist" compilations found on my computer. I tried to focus on songs and tracks that only showed up on that particular compilation, the ones that showed up in other places that I noticed and remembered, I tried to note. Of course, I might of missed some, but these are all tracks that I enjoy.
I included the discogs links for them, if anyone wants a particular compilation that is listed, feel free to request it, I have all of them so it would be no problem.

A. Not sure if this is some home made compilation that sneaked into my files, I can't find any info on it otherwise. It's dope though. The track is also a B-side only track from their "When I Make It" single that dropped originally in 1992.
B. Was first released on the Bomb Hip Hop Compilation, but later was released as part of a special bonus CD for the Big Shots release that was put out in 1994. For some reason, I don't remember getting an extra CD with mine when I bought it, I'm going to have to go back and look.
C. Yup, same Live Squad as the one Big Stretch would later be involved in. I'm not on the up and up about their history, but if Stretch is on this song, he sure the hell changed his voice and delivery later.

WYDU Classics Dec 08
My once a year cold has came to visit me this week. Gotta love it when your nose is rubbed raw from blowing it so fuckin' much. At least it's just fucked up sinuses and a basic head cold and not anything more serious.
For this month's WYDU Classics, I thought about doing the Christmas song theme, but honestly, I've never been much of a fan of Hip Hop Christmas songs. I'm not sure what it is, but it was always like oil and water to me. So I said "fuck it" and went with something more in the vein of hip hop. It was simple, a mix of some of my old favorites that haven't made an appearance on the longest running series on WYDU and a few dope tracks that I've picked up the past month (most of those off the Philaflava forum) that I wanted to hear more of. So there you have it, no rhyme or reason for this months collection other than I wanted to hear the shit. Easy enough.
We start off with the Jungle Brother's "On The Road Again", the remix version by Q-Tip. I remember preferring this version a whole hellva lot more than the album version. I wasn't the biggest JB's fan (I know, sacrilegious), but this jam was kinda like Tribe's "Can I Kick It", in that it grabbed my attention. Both the remix for "I'm The Magnificent" by Special Ed and Show & AG's "Fat Pockets" should have already been on these a long time ago. I'm a BIG Juggaknots fan, and "Jive Talk" is just one of four or five EXTREMELY dope tracks from the Juggknots self titled EP (Later re released as the Clear Blue Skies EP). Jesse West did some dope stuff with 3rd Eye and Nine, so I usually snatch up anything I see that he's been associated with. Didn't know this remix by him for "Valley of the Skinz" by Trends of Culture was even out there until I saw it on the TROY forums (and check out the blog if you haven't, it's fuckin' amazin). It lives up to the anticipation. Great shit. Then I thought Tim Dog's "Do or Die" was kinda of a dud, but this 12 inch version of "I Get Wrecked" with KRS and produced by DJ Moe Love is nothing short of adrenaline inducing and I'm not responsible for any holes you might punch in a wall. To slow things up, we come up with Dysfunkshunal Familee track featuring Finsta Bundy, "Like That You Don't", which I hadn't heard before this month, but it's some gritty NY music from the mid 90's. Hard drums highlights the Deuces Wild track "Deuces is Def". They are a group I've been digging up their material since hearing Nine with them on a track. I believe they are Funkmaster Flex's old group, or he was down with them. Too lazy to look it up right now. We jump over to the left coast (plus Houston for the original Scarface 12inch version) for some nice goodies, including Pac's original version of "Got My Mind Made Up" which features some verses from some other cats, such as Inspectah Deck. There is also a nice remix of "Me-o-Mi-o" from Casual and the classic "Battle Drill" Saafir. We jump over to the blogs namesake, No Face and their classic "Fake Hair Wearin' Bitch" featuring the infamous 2 Live Crew. The last few tracks are full of personal favorites, except for the Unsung Heroes track, featuring none other than one of my all-time favorite Canadian MCs, Frankenstein. It's a fairly recent track I think, and one I hadn't heard, but daaaaaayum. It's nice. Enjoy!

WYDU Classics Nov '08

Do y’all want the bad new or the good news first? The bad news first you say?
It’s a Monday.
The good news?
Well most of us here in the U.S. only have a three day work week. Thanksgiving is this Thursday and the majority of us get Friday off as well. So basically, it’s like a Wednesday. How f’in cool is that?
I know I can use it. The weekend trip to Reno was fun and all, but now I need a rest from my vacation. How bad is that? I was saving this post for later in the week, but since I have nuthin' for today, it goes up.
It’s time for another issue of the world famous (okay, kinda known on the internet) WYDU Classics. I really want to get to bed so I'm not going to waste much time here. There were mainly a bunch of tracks that I used to like from back in the day, around when I first discovered what Napster and Audio Galaxy was. Of course most of these tracks are all older than those days, but I'd download all sorts of crazy shit from those P2P sites back in the day.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask away....

The Next Few Weeks....
Industry rule #4080 "Record company people are shady," that's what we've been taught from day one. Tribe said it, so it has to be true, right? Well, yes, I'm sure there are many, many reasons to be a little skeptical of record labels, especially in this day of age when they've forced fed sub par music down our throats. But, while they've screwed over countless artists, they've also been responsible for getting great music to our stores and into our homes so we could listen to it. At a time in the the 80's up to the late 90's, before the independents and the onslaught of DIY (Do It Yourself) type of steez, you had to be connected with a label for your music to be heard. While they were screwing the artist and screwing the consumer as well, if out them, we would be without many classic albums.
Throughout the history of hip hop, there have been certain labels that well forever been associated with great music. Labels such as Def Jam, Rap-A-Lot, and Delicious Vinyl were such ground breaking and frontier pushers that they too have permantely cemented their legacies into the hip hop lore. For the next few weeks, we are going to cover some of the historic labels such as Delicious Vinyl, Rap-A-Lot, Wild Pitch, Big Beat, Luke (Skyywalker) Records and some others fairly prominent labels that been important part of hip hop history, either by the mark they made or the artists they released, these labels will always be a key part of hip hop's history.
Jive Records/Zomba
The first label we are going to cover is a fairly major label, in terms of the backing they had and who they were associated with. Jive/Zomba was a label that easily had some of the best acts in the late 80's and early 90's. They were a label that was responsible for a wide range of different acts such as Whodini, Too Short, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, and Boogie Down Productions. Originally one of (if not) the largest independent record labels in the world, Zomba Records Ltd. has since been bought out by BMG in 2002, which in turn, Sony owns. The path this whole outcome took was a long winding road.
The Start
The journey started way back in 1977 (or in some accounts 1975) when two South Africans by the name of Clive Calder and Ralph Simon started up the Zomba record label in London. The two were both aspiring musicians, Calder a bass player and Simon a keyboarder and were looking for a way to release music, promote concerts and publish music. The name "Zomba" was taken from the Capital of the African country Malawi. In 1978, the two would expand their business to New York City. In 1981, Jive Records was born, which would be under the parent company of Zomba. Named after Township Jive, a form of African music and dance, Jive would find early success in the realms of hip hop by signing Whodini, who would be a vital group in the mainstream hip hop movement along with Run DMC and Fat Boys as establishing hip hop as a viable music to be heard nationwide. The albums, Escape and Black in Black both scored platinum plaques while Open Sesame went gold.
The Peak
From the get go, Arista was responsible for the label's distribution. Clive Davis, who was in charge of Arista at the time wasn't a big fan of hip hop at the time, probably was responsible for the label not getting to heavy into the hip hop realm despite Whodini's success. In 1987 though, Jive would switch to RCA. This marks the time when Jive would get heavily into the hip hop game. They would sign artists such as Too Short, Schoolly D, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and Boogie Down Productions. They found great commercial success with a few acts, "He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper" sold 3x platinum and Too Short's "Life is...Too Short" went double platinum. Other groups such as Kool Rock Jay & DJ Slice, Doctor Ice, and Skinny Boys, really never got out the chutes.
The Later Years (what is worthy enough to mention)
By 1990, EMI was pursuing Zomba fairly heavily, so BMG (who owned RCA) purchased a large minority stake in the label. They would buy more shares later in 1996 and by 2001, BMG/RCA would purchase Jive Records for 2 Billion dollars, thus ending Jive's run as an independent label.. In 2004, BMG and Sony merged, with the Sony name being installed.
As I mentioned Jive has been behind many a classic album. Everything from "By All Mea
ns Necessary" to the first three Tribe albums, to overlook their contribution to the hip hop game would be unfortunate. They've also been behind some classics that only the true hip hop heads would latch on to, such as the Steady B releases and Schoolly D's stuff and the three Skinny Boys albums. It my younger day, if I say that Jive logo on a tape, I bought it pretty much. True, the label has had it's problems, with both KRS and Tribe throwing some jabs at the label in the past, but the bottom line is, when Jive was an independent (even though it had some big dogs behind it), it had a hellva roster. It's one of those labels that it's legacy gets lost in the grand scheme of things. We'll just forgot about the pop garbage they have resorted to putting out in the late 90's and the new century.

Trick O' Treat: WYDU Halloween Classics Oct 08

It's that scary day of the year once again, Halloween. Things go bump in the night, spooky stories are told, and ghastly visions are seen. Or you just use the holiday to dress up and get insanely drunk. What ever your views on the holiday, hip hop has always had the soundtracks to play along with any Halloween party or gathering. Over the years, we've had everything from Whodini's "Freaks Come Out at Night" and the "Haunted House of Rock", to all the Horrorcore type fad that was around the mid 90's. Humor and gore, what other musical genre can be that diverse?
I've always found Halloween to be a fun. To me, it was always another reason to party. I've had some memorable moments over the past years, and as usual, hip hop was always involved. For the final WYDU Classic of WYDU's birthday month, I put together some "classic" scary themed hip hop tracks. There is a little bit of everything to be found on here. Some humor, some geniune disturbing tracks. There is some corny shit, some good stuff, and some in between. I've never been a big horrorcore fan, so I left most of that alone. There is a gang of Freddy and Nightmare On Elm Street tracks on here. For some reason, I never realized how big of a fad that was back in 87, 88 until I watched Werner von Wallenrod's Video blog on his NEW blogger hosted blog (how happy am I to see that?). After watching his video that included MC Chill, Rock Gee & Jazzy, and Krushin' MCs (didn't have the Rock Gee joint), instead of adding a few tracks to the WYDU Classic I was planning on putting up tonight, I ended up doing the whole volume on the Halloween theme. So if you don't like it, blame Werner...haha
-Note: Seriously, if you don't know Werner von Wallenrod's blog before this, you really need to check it out. That cat knows more than me and anyone else I know combined when it comes to old school hip hop.

01 D.J. Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - A Nightmare On My Street
I loved this song as a kid. I actually won an award in my Junior year English class for "Best Directed Video", for a video I made for this song. I came up with the concept, took director's duties and even did a little acting for it. Wow, if that video tape came out, I'd be the next Hype Williams....haha
02 Geto Boys - Mind Playing Tricks On Me
Mainly used it for Bushwick's last verse. This track has always reminded of the holiday, so on it goes.
03 Eminem & Royce Da 5'9 - Scary Movies
Again, we are just getting warmed up. Kind of follows the theme and I just like the song. The strings are killer and any track that has Royce and Em at his prime is good with me.
04 Masta Ace - Scared Of The Dark
An unreleased track from the Music Man. Not really "scary" or dealing with anything scary other than racism, but again it fit the theme. This track was made after Take a Look Around and before Slaughtahouse. Dope track. You can find it these days, but I'm not going to tell you where.
05 Lovebug Starski - Amityville (House On The Hill)
The Lovebug came with a track that made modest noise back in 1985. Nothing "spooktacular" (so shoot me...), but we jump into the more themed tracks of the compilation. To read more on this particular track, check out Werner's write up on it last year during Halloween.
06 Fat Boys - Are You Ready For Freddy
I had completely forgotten about this Fat Boys track, which is odd, cause I'm a pretty big fan of the Fat Boys, but after watching the video, I remember why I banished it out to my subconscious. I'll let the video do the rest of the talking. Yes, that's the real Freddy rapping....wow.....
07 Dana Dane - Nightmares
Another one of the original novelty "haunted" raps from one of the original Kangol Krew members.
08 Gregory D & Mannie Fresh - Freddie's Back
Another Freddy track, Fred was a popular dude. And yes, THAT Mannie Fresh.
09 DJ Magic Mike & MC Madness -Back to Haunt You
I enjoy my bass music, so have to include one of the best to ever do it in the form of Magic Mike. You had to remember the cover to this EP.
10 MC A.D.E. - Nightmare On A.D.E. Street
And while Magic Mike was probably the best selling bass artist of all-time, I have to go with A.D.E. as my favorite bass artist of all-time. Yet another Freddy influenced track. As far as I remember, this wasn't on any of his albums. There was a "Nightmare Bonus" on his debut platter, but I think this was only a 12 inch offering.
11 Run-D.M.C. - Ghostbusters
Wow, I forgot just how much I hated this song when it came out and time hasn't really changed that. This was that weird time when Daryl, Joe and Jay were having a problem finding themselves musically. The only good thing to come out of this song was the fact that "Pause" was the b-side and seemed to take off with it's New Jack influenced sound, giving Run DMC a few more years before the Crown Royal LP would permanently sink their careers
12 Krushin' MCs - Nightmare On Rhyme Street
Yet, ANOTHER Nightmare On Elm Street influenced song. This probably ranks as one of my favorites after the DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince effort. Freddy does a wicked beat box routine. This crew would later be known as KMC Kru that did the "Devil Up To Michigan" track that has appeared on past WYDU Classics. Learn more about this track on Werner's video post.
13 Doug E. Fresh & The Get Fresh Crew - Spirit
The Ghostbusters II movie tried to ruin another rap group. This track isn't as bad as the Run DMC effort, just kind of half hearted. Funny enough, Hip Hop was high commercialized even back in those days. It's nothing new.
14 MC Chill - Nightmare on Chill Street
Guess what this song is about? That's right, Freddy! Another 12 inch single only track that you won't find on his self titled debut (and only?) album. Learn more again on Werner and thanks goes to him for reminding me about this track.
15 Kings of Pressure - Tales From The Darkside
Things get a little more serious with this Kings Of Pressure track. For those of you unfamiliar with Kings of Pressure, they were a group pieced together by Eric Sadler and Hank Shocklee if I remember right and featured Johnny Juice. Not bad, but would have been better with Bomb Squad production behind them. Dope song though.
16 Madstyle - Visions of Vampires
I don't know much about this group, only found this track when I was going through some of my files on my computer looking for a Mobstyle track. This track needs to be much longer though. Fits the scary theme perfectly.
17 Gangsta Nip - Horror Movie Rap
Couldn't have a Halloween themed compilation without a Gangster NIP track, could we? I'm not always big on this type of hip hop, but I can appreciate some of it and NIP is one of them.
18 Insane Poetry - Bring Ya Daughter To The Slaughter
Interview With a Pysco probably would have fit better, but I couldn't pass up a song with a title that repped WYDU.
19 Geto Boys - Chuckie
Although I always found the Bushwick Bill and Chuckie tracks rather corny, I have to admit that I liked them, especially this track.
20 Gravediggaz feat Craig G - Don't Be Afraid of the Dark
I was never a big Gravediggaz fan, which stands to reason why I'm not completely sure where this track is from. I wanted to pick something different than the normal tracks I could have picked from the group, so this was the one I went with.
21 The Undatakaz - The Gravediggers
I know nothing about this group, can't find shit about them either. As far as I know, I think they were from New Jersey, but that's about it.
22 Arts of Orgin - Into The Pit
Chino XL's first group, only the intro resembles much of a Halloween track, but I like the song, so it made it.
23 Three Six Zero - The Lyrical Jasun
All I know is this crew was out of Connecticut and it utilizes a nice use of a Big Daddy Kane vocal sample.
24 Elem3nt - Evil Echos
This is a pretty freaky track and fits well into the whole theme. The "rapping" is weird, more like MC 900 FT Jesus doing a horrorcore track, but it's interesting. I got nothing as far as any background though.

WYDU Classics Oct 08 Vol II

Part of the on going month long celebration of the three year exsistence of WYDU kicks off tonight with another volume of WYDU Classics, and we have some BANGERS for y'all tonight. I'm running low on fumes, super tired, it's late, and spent a bunch of time working on another WYDU project that you will see soon enough in the near future, so this will be rather short and sweet and to the point. It's definitely a compiliation that you should check out, especially if you want to brush up on your history. Some rather obscure stuff showing up on the scene. Thanks to the sites that might have contributed to this collection.

WYDU Classics Sept 08 Version 1.1: I Must Dis You Vol 2

As I said last week, we are throwing down some WYDU Classics every week in the month of October to celebrate WYDU's 3rd birthday.
WYDU Classics Oct 08: I Must Dis You Vol 2
********(You'll have to change the month, I think I have it as Sept on the File name and Aug in the files album....it's mad late)*********
Back in April, I dropped the first volume of WYDU Classics: I Must Dis You. I mentioned my love for all that is good hearted (or heated) competition.....as long as it stays within the realm of skills and not guns. This month, I drop a second volume on your unexpecting heads, as we cover the wacky, the goofy, the serious and the dope dis tracks that have dropped over the years....

01 Common - The Bitch In Yoo (Original Demo Version)
Any hip hopper worth his weight in gold should know about this song already. Common straight sets into Cube and his Westside Connection brethren. This version is the reputed original demo version. The beat is the same for the most part, there is a few different sounds here and there. It does come with some different lyrics except for the first verse. Not as potent as the version that would be released to the masses. In some ways, Cube never really recovered from this.
02 Bumpy Knuckles - Crazy Like A Foxxx
I'm cheating on this one a bit. It would have been better if I would have gotten my CD-R of this album, before it got re released this past summer, but oh well. Freddie goes at the Ultramagnetic MC boys for a line they dropped on "Yo Black" that went something like "“why would you put a Foxxx against an alligator”. Probably not a smart idea, whether it was on purpose or not, which is still under debate. On the track, Foxxx serves beat down pie to Moe Love, Ced Gee and Kool Keith. Rumor has it, that Freddie and Keith ended up on the same cross country flight from NYC to LA, Keith was shook, but they ended up squashing the beef while on the flight.
03 K-Solo - The Answer Back
The story goes that DMX & Solo were locked up together. They were cool while in jail, but when DMX got out and Solo claims X jacked his "Spellbound" style for a track (which I have somewhere). Needless to say, the two haven't liked each other since then. Solo sounds pissed on this and doesn't fuck around in going right after the Dark Man X. This is vicious right here....
04 King Sun - Doo Wop
This was something I picked up off of Philaflava's TROY forum. I had heard about it, but never heard it. King Sun was one dude that got major respect in NY back in the day. Standing about 6'9, dude was stacked. Apparently, he got sick of Pac and Deathrow back around '96 and let them have it. It's not all that venomous, he just tells it like it is.
05 Craig G - Ripped To Shreds
Back when the Juice Crew began to split up, Shan and Craig G got into a little spat. This short little dis track has Craig spitting the classic line, "He called me his son, but his he sure?/ I never slipped checks underneath his door", haha, classic.....
06 D To The S - Dissin' These Fools
As far as I know and remember, D 2 The S was a group outta Chi-Town, which Naughty didn't have too many good things to say about while they were involved with a little snafu with Tung Twista (see "Suicide"), and D To The S took offense adn dropped "Dissin' These Fools".
07 Cormega - Never Personal (Fuck Nas & Nature)
After Nas dicked over his homeboy by replacing him with Nature, Cormega had some choice words for his former homie. Excuse my "favorite" DJ screaming all over the track. This track was a white label back around 2000, but I didn't want to dig through my CD-R's after it. It breaks up toward the end, sorry...
08 Royce Da 5 9 - Malcolm X
A somewhat newer track (03?), but Royce was straight pissed off on this one, dropping scathing lines against the D12 boys. He had some choice words for Em, but didn't come as hard as he probably could have. You can tell this was personal. One of my favorites.
09 Eminem - Can I Bitch You can't say Em doesn't have a sense of humor, and he demonstrates it best on Can-I-Bitch, who is about...yeah, you guessed it, Canibus. He also throws a funny ass jab at JD (of So So Def fame) while he's at it. I don't remember the exact way this feud started, I think 'Bis ran his mouth about Em in an interview if I remember right. Em throw some dirt at him on "Square Dance Rap" from his third album, then delivered the death blow on this track.
10 5 Star Moet - Moet Get's Busy
We get into the cat fights, as 5 Star Moet comes at Shante. Don' know anything about 5 Star Moet, or why she went after her, other than the fact that was the chick you went after to make a name for yourself back in the day.
11 J.J. Fad - Another Hoe
The Cali girl group on Ruthless thought they might as well go after Shante as well. Sparky D was spared either as the girls from JJ Fad went after both of them. This is actually a pretty good track, as they interpolate Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust".
12 Tweedy Bird Loc - I'm Calling You a Bitch
Tweedy comes back again on this volume, going after Queen Latifah. I guess he was annoyed with Latifah's "U.N.I.T.Y." track when she asks, "who you callin' a bitch?" Tweedy came out and basically said "ME!" Shit is straight up hilarious.
13 Luke - Pussy Ass Kid And Hoe Ass Play (Payback Is A Mutha Fucker)
Another gut busting track. Kid N Play made the mistake of saying in an interview on Yo! (I think, if my memory serves me right) saying they didn't like negative rap such as 2 Live Crew and Luke Skywalker. Or maybe it was first done on a track from their Face The Nation album. I can't remember. Anyway, Luke dropped this scathing comeback. It gets rather ugly.
14 J-Ro - The X-Homie
Somewhere along the way, Xzibit head got gassed (imagine that) and kind of shitted on his Alkaholik crew, or at least that's how the story goes. J-Ro, wasn't having it and dropped this track on him.
15 Kurupt - Callin' Out Names
DMX is the object of frustration again, this time as Kurupt goes after him. This all allegedly after DMX stepped to and reportedly got with his woman, who happen to goes by the name of Foxy Brown. I've always kind of dug this track, although it could have more bite.
16 DJ Pooh Feat Kam - Whoop! Whoop!
Someone having a problem with ends when it comes to Ice Cube? Naaaah, never heard that before. Kam was pissed after he insisted Street Knowledge didn't pay him right. Shit went down, after rumors of Kam snatching Cubes Westside Connection chain while they brawled in traffic (doubtful), Kam's homie snatched it at a party (more likely) then gave the chain to B-Real, who then took pictures with it. Also rumors of Cube and Lench Mob running into Kam and his boys in Chicago, which Kam briefly mentions in the song.
17 Rodney O & Joe Cooley - The Sounds of the Underground
I like Rodney O & Joe Cooley, always have, but they always came across extra bitter when they started dissing the east. I'll give them credit for doing it before it became "cool" to do so. On this track, they came after KRS One and LL Cool J. Good for a listen.
18 Pooh Man - Backstabbaz
Pooh Man had beef with the whole Dangerous Crew when he stepped. This track was basically about Too Short and Ant Banks. This song kinda sucks actually. You shouldn't have an R&B hook on a dis track, unless it's down tongue in cheek.
19 LL Cool J - Break Of Dawn Freestyle
LL live, spitting his classic dis track over the "Keep Rising To The Top" beat. Lyrically, there are some small differeneces, but it's basically the same thing.

WYDU Classics Sept 08: WYDU Invented The Remix Vol 2

Ahhh yes, we are a month behind. What? You didn't know? Well some of you did obviously. The WYDU Classics will be back in full effect this month as part of the WYDU birthday celebration, we'll be dropping a WYDU Classic every week for the rest of October. So all you fans of the classics and saying that WYDU isn't old school enough, well maybe this will make you some what happy. I got themes working on some of the others, but today's is all about the Remix, one of my favorite things in hip hop. I'm not talking about rapping over the same beat and getting five of the hottest MCs in the game to kick a recycled 16 over your joint, I'm talking changing shit up, making it better, or at least making it enjoyable and different. This month, we have some of my personal favorites from the past, all kinds of good shit, some of it rare, some of it not so rare, so ch-ch-check it out.....

16 The Roots - Silent Treatment (Da Beatminerz Mix)
17 Chi Ali - Roadrunner (Puberty Mix)
18 INI - Fakin Jax (Frankenstein Remix)
It leads off with BDP and a song found on the "We In There" single. It dropped before the album, and I thought the original version was the f'in ish. Initially, I never paid much attention to the remix version, which features a new third verse and an ill siren sound that I love so much. After awhile though, I went back to the remix and it would become a favorite to put on my homemade mixtapes that I was making back in the day. The K-Def beat for the remix of Pos K's "Ain't No Crime" remix might sound familiar if you heard his Beats From The 90's instrumental project he released earlier this year. Hard 2 Obtain was one of the more slept on crews of the days, and the "Ghetto Diamond" remixed was armed with an ill sample. I can't pass up including Frankenstien in any of these WYDU Classics and he shows up twice, first on a remix of his own joint, "Frankenstein's Pain", which is better than the original in my opinion. He also blesses the InI joint "Fakin' Jax" with the remix treatment, which after you get used to it, is up there with the original. I've always loved "Strobelight Honey", at least the lyrics and the concept, but the remix spiced up a beat I didn't always care for. Black Sheep infused some fluttering horns to entrance the listener and gives you the feeling that Gooney Gnu is running down the hall after you.
Halfway into the collection, we touch onto some of the West Coast gems. Two of my favorite left side groups in The Nonce and The B.U.M.S. both show up with remixes. The BUMS have a Vinyl Reanimator remix of "Take A Look Around", which employs a slow ride bassline with lightly rang bells scatter over the beat. It's an excellent remix that smashes an already solid original. The Nonce single for "Bus Stops" featured a handful of remixes, the Metro Line Remix being my favorite. Two songs that are my favorite from the each artist shows up next. "Temptations" from Tupac gets redone by one of my westcoast favorite, Battlecat. It's not as good as the Easy Moe Bee original, but it's still a good look. The Pharcydes "Otha Fish" gets redone by LA Jay. It's not as good as the original, but again, it's a nice twist on a favorite.

WYDU Classics July 08

Well since it is almost the end of July after all, I might as well post this month's WYDU Classics. I was meaning to do a bunch of rare De La material, but I still have a bunch of my shit in boxes from moving last winter, so not everything is easily accessible. The originally started off with a theme of new oldies, since I've been listening to a lot of the "unearthed gems" popping up lately, such as the McGruff EP, the DITC Rare Productions album that popped up and a Cenobites project that came out of nowhere. But I soon realized while there was some great stuff, there wasn't enough to fill a whole volume. So I did what I usually do and went and added some songs I've had stuck in my subconscious mind lately. The original version of "Jorge of the Projects" from last year's Kurious demos that popped up around the time of his debut rerelease. I think I like it better than the album version. The original version of BDP's "P Is Free" can also be found on this months collection. It's not as good as the original, but still worth a listen. Also found toward the end of the tape are a couple personal favorites of mine. First is Rise of Demigodz fame and his joint "Do You Know Him?" I never thought I'd be longing for the quality underground indie music that was found toward the turn of the century, but damn, I am. This is a great joint with a nice smooth beat. I wish dude would return. Also, WYDU favorite J-Zone has his S.L.A.P., that without looking, I want to say was a b-side to.....well, my memory is shot, but it's b-side that came out around the Pimps Don't Pay Taxes. Little Bastards is some ignorant shit from the early 90's. I must say though, I apperciate this more now than I did back then. It's also a tribute to long time WYDU contributor Brian aka B aka MC Eiht aka a couple other names. He is moving on to greener pastures, so I'd like to say "thanks" and best of luck!
