Artist Spotlight Week: MIDIMarc

BLOGGERHOUSE SPOTLIGHT: Duval resident, the infamous Tough Junkie

Hip hop is the direct descendant of the Bronx, a sound that was developed in the '70's. Since then, it has went not only nationwide, but worldwide. Each region has added it's own flavor and style to the basic building blocks of the hip hop sound. It's evolved, for the lack of a simpler word. It's difficult enough to master one region's sound, but to be able to conquer multiple regions, that takes something, even though I know cat's won't admit to it. One of the best to cover the soulful sounds of the north and the ass shakin' sounds of the dirty south is South Carolina's MIDIMarc. I actually become aware of MIDI's talents before we started the blog, as he was a regular on the Justus League's message board, The Lawn. MIDI's soulful chops and sounds drew me in as he provided beats to some of the local emcee's on the board. It wasn't until much later when we had some conversations via email that he showed me his secret identity. MIDIMarc was just as comfortable makin' the southern fried funk as he was throwing down an Al Green sample. I'm by far an expert on the southern sounds, but MIDI provided the energy and "nastiness" that I would expect from the dirty dirty.

This spotlight has long been in the making, as MIDI has been a strong supporter to WYDU, something that I've always appreciated. This should have happened two years ago, but good things come to those that wait, so here it is.....

We want to thank everyone for the feedback on "Da Shape Of Ya" and to all that expressed
interest in the the release of the project. We both stand behind our creation 200 percent and hope that the music not only earns a spot in your iPod, Hard Drive, Thumb Drive, CD Player, Tape Player(If you're still dubbing tapes). If you find the music to you liking the best thing you can do is recommend the music to a friend. There is no greater compliment than word of mouth. No matter where we go in our careers nothing is ever going to sound like "InDAIpendent"...it is now officially the sound of L'Daialogue and MIDIMarc. -MIDIMarc

MIDIMarc Blog: http://midimarc.blogspot.com/

WYDU: What's good man? For those that aren't familiar with you, while don't give them a little introduction and where you come from?

MIDIMarc: I'm MIDIMarc and I'm a champion producer from Hopkins, SC.

WYDU: I've known about you and your music even before starting the blog, first hearing you on The Lawn back in the day. Exactly how long have you been honing your craft? How did you get your start?

MIDI: I've been making beats since 1997. I had people in my hometown that brought about a great deal of inspiration (DJ Prince Ice, and StreetSide Records) but the straw that broke the camels back was when I herd Wu-Tang Forever. That album made me want to see what I could do as far as making music.

W: Let's talk about your sound. It's really hard to pin down, because I've heard beats of yours that sounds as soulful as the best but I've heard you put down some southern "crunk" type beats that could get nasty with the best of them. What's your secret for being able to cross into what is essentially to different strains of hip hop?

MIDI: Versatility is the key. When I say I love Hip Hop music I mean ALL of it. The beats that you hear from me are a reflection of what I grew up listening to. Being raised in South Carolina I was exposed to the greatest music from every part of the country and it all played a large part in my sound today (which is still growing by the way)

W: You and I have talked about this before in limited conversations, but what is your take on the whole North/South thing? A lot of cats that are into the more "traditional" sound reject any forms of southern music that isn't Outkast...

MIDI: It can be very discouraging when you do something with all your heart and soul and there are people that say that it "isn't real". I made the decision to not let it bother me and make what my spirit tells me to make.

W: Is there any one thing that you would say is "ruining" hip hop, at least the way we know and love it? How do you change that?

MIDI: I don't think anything is ruining hip hop right now...I think its still growing, and its still a new genre of music when you compare it to other forms of music. Folks who are whatever age have the way they remember it and the new generation has the way that they view it now. As long as kids are getting the same feeling I got when I saw the emcee battle
between Kid n Play on "House Party", or the feeling I got when I saw Omar Epps on the
turntables in "Juice", or the feeling I got when I saw the "We're All In The Same Gang"
video..I say let them eat cake

W: Where do you think hip hop goes from here? Is going to fizzle out from over saturation, or do you think this online thing takes it even further into the future?

MIDI: Like I said..its still growing, so I'm gonna sit back and enjoy the ride. You have to do way more than over-saturate to make this culture fizzle out. The only prediction that I feel
comfortable about making is that there will be a huge increase in successful independent
artist.

W: On to my questions I ask every producer, simply because I'm always curious. What are your weapons of choice when it comes to production?

MIDI: Right now i'm on FL Studio and the Novation Xio25. Who knows what I'll add to the setup though.

W: Let's talk about the whole "Hardware Vs. Software" debate, what is your take on the whole thing?

MIDI: Why choose when you can have both..haha..seriously.

W: Who are some of the MCs you'd most like to work with?

MIDI: Nas, Rakim, Project Pat, Bun B are some names that came to mind right now. Honestly there's no person I wouldn't work with though.

W: At the end of your life, you are given a chance to remix one hip hop song before your last breath, which one do you take and why?

MIDI: Pete Rock and CL Smooth - T.R.O.Y. it would be great to get that remix out before my last breath cause I wouldn't be able to hear any of the negative feedback from touching a
classic..haha

W: Speaking of remixes, which is harder, crafting a remix or starting from scratch for a new beat?

MIDI: I'm the type of producer that can't force out a beat. As long as I'm inspired or at least have a tune in my head I can knock either one out.

W: Your latest project was with L’Daialogue, what can listeners expect from that EP?

MIDI: You can expect dope beats and dope lyrics. You can also expect me to post a download link right now also (Download Here)

W: What else do you have in the chambers that you are working and what else can we expect this year from MIDIMarc?

MIDI: More beats, more singles, and more EP's produced entirely by me.

W: Any last words to the groupies and the followers?

MIDI: To the groupies, please have a copy of your shot records and recent HIV/STD test results. To my followers...keep on following..cause I'm a keep on creating.

Metermaids - "Nightlife"

"Build me a horizon out of promises and matches / We'll smash it with our bare hands and compare the damage"

The Song:

The Metermaids envelop us in their unique brand of hip-hop with the title track from their debut album, Nightlife. Backed by a hard-hitting beat that enraptures listeners in a repetitive motif, emcees Sentence and Swell expose an emotional honesty that cuts through the complex issues of life that are so often over-simplified into black and white. In one of his more poignant moments, Sentence raps, "Build me a horizon out of promises and matches / We'll smash it with our bare hands and compare the damage / We'll talk like we both don't have guns drawn / And I'll fold up your words till they read like a love song / Beautiful, soothing, useless, etcetera / Could have been worse but it could have been better / I write my past on the buildings in cracks / Some stand and some collapse."

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=281353661&s=143441

The Background:

The Metermaids are two New York emcees, Swell and Sentence, who met through NYC's underground hip-hop scene in 2006. Embodying the convergence of indie rock and hip-hop, the Metermaids represent a new sound in crossover music that bends and melds genres, unveiling new possibilities both lyrically and musically. After hooking up with the producer Matt Stine of 27 Sound they released their debut EP in 2006. The duo then hit the road touring with the likes of Brand Nubian, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Fabulous, Lady Bug Mecca (Digable Planets), The Lox, and Camp Lo. In 2008, with an arsenal of touring under their belt, the Metermaids launched their first full-length Nightlife, a raucous mash up of gritty break beats, heartfelt lyrics, and a touch of rock n' roll. Nightlife is currently available on 27 Sound Entertainment.

"Its been a long time.....I shouldn't have left you.....without some dope beats to step to"

Whats goin on folks. Hopefully the Fresh Produce series hasn't been forgotten already. When you wear so many different hats like I do sometimes things don't go according to schedule. I've still been busy though. Getting ready for the trip to NY...still making beats, and remixing. So lets see what I have for yall today

1. BooCocky - http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?dml2njye2zo

They might not stand out to most folks, but my favorite part of the beat are the church bells.....kinda reminds me of something you'd hear on a vintage Pastor Troy album.....WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T KNOW WHO PASTOR TROY IS!!!!!!

2. Born To Wander - http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?jmgqoo0tdji

Did I mention that I like bass?

3. Get Rare - http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ugrzhinjzjw

To producers out there....don't be afraid to layer your claps, and then don't be afraid to slide one slightly to the left or to the right....gives a cool effect if you ask me.

Now here are a couple of remixes. I'm interested to see the feedback I get from them. I remixed a couple of rappers that seem to rub the online fans the wrong way..lol

Tokyo Cigar Presents: The 9 Diagram Phoenix

Wu tang clan is the best to ever do it. The rhymes, swagger, ingenuity and all around funny shit they brought to the game is unmatched in terms of skill. I've been a die hard fan ever since I heard "method man" in 93 and I've been that dude that argues on their behalf intensely ( ask anyone I know )

With this project I just wanted to have the Wu rocking over some extra grimy tracks. It's a throwback in terms of the sound but futuristic in terms of vibe. I laced some heavy drums and dark vibes to bring out the hardness of the rhymes. THIS IS NOT AN INDUSTRY SOUNDING JOINT. Its straight lo fi and gritty. MTV cats need to fall back. This is only built for my peoples that know what a TDK tape looks like.

So grab your fat bags of skunk and white owl blunts and go get lifted, then grab a forty and a shorty and go stick it.

Weekend Lite: The Post With No Title

As I stare out the frozen wasteland that is otherwise known as my front yard, I having been sitting and thinking about some sort of opening paragraph for this weeks "Weekend Lite". I sat and thought, then thought some more. Nothing is really pressing in my mind. Nothing new has gone on in my life. Nor is there anything particularly crazy going on in the world of hip hop. I guess I'll just chalk it up as nothing really interesting to say. Writers block is a bitch. There is of course a certain album that has leaked that I've listened to probably six times in the last two days. Not that I condone that kind of thing. But did anyone really think I was going to wait until late March to listen to it? I know I'm probably the last person to say "go out and support the artist", because I don't support as nearly as much as I should, but that is strictly due to me being broke more than me not wanting to. None the less, when the unmentioned album that leaked this week is officially released AND you like it, support the the unmentioned group by purchasing the album. I have heard of a potential of special items being added to the sale of the album, but I don't have any conformation or details (ahemmmdvdahemmmmaybe), regardless buy it when it drops. (I wrote this before Clap's post, so much for my un blocking the block....hahaha)

SoulClap gets some shine on Kevin Nottingham's Producer's Spotlight series, go there and support WYDU's own!

Editor's Pick For The Week:

Toy Box Scholars

I'm sure Eric will be writing more on this in the future, so I'll save the major accolades for him. Myself, along with E and a couple other WYDU contributors all received two albums is from Providence, Rhode Island's Toy Box Scholars. The Toy Box Scholars are made up of J Hewgs, Dreams, Dialect, Magma Grapple, Studs Ramrod and Opaque Meridian. After Eric started gloating over these cats, I took some time from listening to the fresh leaked eMC album and threw this in the headphones. I fell asleep about five songs into it, which for me is a good thing, cause I can't fall asleep to music I don't like. It just annoys me and I end up putting on something I like. Since then I've listened to their '07 release "We Got The Love" all the way and really liked the jazzy, laid back flows that sounds like (and these are Eric's words, but I tend to agree...sort of) a combination of Digable Planets (minus the chick) and old Hiero. For me, I say it reminded me of Fat Jon, 3582, and Five Deez type of stuff, so fans of those groups will definitely dig these cats. It is an album that will be getting some play in the future.

Canadian Hoser AG Remix
http://www.zshare.net/download/67941504cdc12d/

I haven't really posted many (or any) of the "American Gangster Remixes" I've been sent. I have an unhealthy obsession for these things for some damn reason. I tend to think that the Black Album remixes were better in overall quality than most of the "American Gangter" remixes I've heard, but I still keep downloading them whenever I find one I don't have. I've been trying to come up with some kind of series highlighting my favorite AG remix tracks, but taking the time to sit down and listen to 80+ albums is....well, mind numbing to say the least. Regardless, I will get to it, at just about the time everyone is totally sick of them, but I've always been a day late and a dollar short on the latest fads (what the f*ck is tweeter?). Anyway, I also have a fondness for the word "Hoser". I'm just jealous that the Canucks up north came up with it. Oh well....anyway, I've only gotten one listen to this attempt and while its not the greatest I've heard, it's far from the worse as well. And hey, it has "hoser" in the title, so up it goes.

MIDIMarc

Speaking of American Gangster remixes that I liked, MIDIMarc's ranked right up there in the top for me. I had seen the name splashed around for awhile now, but only just recently have I gotten into his work much, thanks to that AG remix album. Hailing out of South Carolina, MIDIMarc is bound to make a name for himself in the near future. His "No Lyrics Necessary" release is a collection of great instrumentals that got a lot of play during a recent Madden marathon for me.

For more info on MIDIMarc, check Kevin Nottingham's Spotlight of the beat maker.

Here are some of his projects for free download. I haven't listened to all of them, but I of course endorse the "American Beatmaker" and "No Lyrics Necessary". Check them all out though....

NAS & QUINCEY TONES - GOD’S GANGSTER

Who is Quincey Tones? Well if you have checked on the eMC album, you have heard him on three tracks, including what seems to the proverbial favorite "Wind's Of Change". Since I didn't know much about him, I decided to check out his myspace and found this album for free download. It is Nas accapellas over flipped samples from "American Gangster". I have yet to listen to it yet, but I plan on sitting some time aside tonight for just that purpose.

Gnotes - Missin' You

Here is a video from an artist that I TOTALLY spaced off during all my moves and stuff (like a few others, my apologies to anyone who's material might have gotten lost in the shuffle). Can some smooth mellow type of vibe going on here and from what I remember of listening to a streaming album, it sounded kind of cool. Kind of a weird video, but I can definitely say it's original.
