Boog Brown - The Grind Season Vol 1

Boog Brown - The Grind Season Vol. 1:
http://www.zshare.net/download/72097194475defa0/

The Background:

In the world of Hip Hop, Atlanta based Boog Brown spreads her "Dope Girl Magic" like her life depends on it and returns us to the roots of a genre that has literally changed the world. Currently based in Atlanta, Detroit native Brown describes herself as a "lover, fighter and artist." This is reflected in her personal style, lyrical approach and unique perspective. Though she has been an emcee for roughly 3 years, her writing goes back to the age of 15, allowing her to amass an arsenal of lyrics including two chapbooks of poetry, Swimming Against the Current State of Mind: My Life In Words and Black Tie Fish Fry, and her debut mixtape, the 2007 release entitled Extended Play. Currently, Brown is developing a spring 2010 tour and releasing her latest mixtape, The Grind Season Vol. 1. Following the mixtape, Boog will be teaming up with producer and fellow Detroit native Apollo Brown for the forthcoming summer release of The Brown Study LP on Mello Music Group.

Boog Brown And Apollo Brown Team Up For Forthcoming LP The Brown Study, Boog Releases New Mixtape Grind Season Vol. 1

(February 3, 2010 - Brooklyn, NY) Newly signed Mello Music artist Boog Brown and producer Apollo Brown join forces to form UPS with their forthcoming album The Brown Study LP, due for release in the summer of 2010. In anticipation of their debut Boog Brown is releasing a mixtape entitled The Grind Season Vol. 1.
The Brown Study LP will be the debut release from UPS, comprising Atlanta-based emcee Boog Brown and hip-hop producer Apollo Brown. Recently signed to Mello Music Group, the two artists joined forces to create an album that Boog describes as "the most vulnerable" she has ever been musically. Due for release in the summer of 2010, The Brown Study LP will showcase the truth, confidence, style, and strong sense of hip-hop integrity that UPS represent.

In anticipation of the UPS album, Boog Brown entices fans with a taste of things to come on her latest mixtape The Grind Season Vol. 1. A collection of music from the Atlanta-based artist, this latest project features production from Illastrate, Lex Boogie, 14KT and appearances from staHHr, Fluxwonda of Binkis Recs, and Mojo Swagger. "Grind Season is a state of being," says Boog on the meaning behind the mixtape's title. "Every day you must grind for your vision. Mine is making honest music." Tracks on the mixtape, including "Grind Season," "Anymode," and "The Essence" serve as perfect examples of Boog's smooth flow and propensity for delivering strong rhymes over laid-back beats. It's all the reassurance you need that, as Boog herself says, "The Boys Club is non-existent to me."

New E The Real EP "Headlock" & Interview

Today we have the privilege to feature one of the WYDU favorites. My man Ethereal Plains aka E The Real, is dropping a free EP, Headlock, today on his new Kinda Dusty website.

For those of you that have been reading WYDU, you will be familiar with E The Real, maybe as part of the Nite People and the Social Light Sounds collective. He has since moved onto other projects, but the skill and talent is still as prevalent. I've been a long time fan of his work, so naturally I support anything he drops.

The new EP, Headlock, is a bit different from some of his previous works. It honestly took me a few listens to get used to the sound, which is based in the drum and bass works of the producer the Remix Villian, but once I did, I can appreciate the EP that much more as a daring and creative piece of work it is. It's not for those that are monotonous in their listening habits, but for those of you with an open mind to music in general, this is well worth the download..... - Trav

E The Real & Remix Villain Present: Headlock

“Headlock” is a five song EP which is entirely produced, mixed and arranged by Remix Villain. All the vocals were performed by myself except for “Vengeance”, which features my friend Alanna, who is the former lead singer for the Boston based group Medicated Kisses. Remix Villain and I linked up a couple years ago in Cambridge, MA and recording all these songs. RV has an electronica/ drum and bass background. This was my first time collaborating on a project with a non Hip Hop producer. Luckily it was an easy transition since the beats were on point. What I love about these songs is that they are completely different from anything I have ever recorded. It was challenging to experiment with new sounds and styles but I feel this experience made me a stronger writer and performer.

My good friend Richard Tibbetts III created the amazing collage for the front cover. The heavy political imagery was a perfect match. There is a political aspect to this project because it was conceived during the Bush era. I don’t consider myself a political person or artist, but during these sessions RV brought out a new side of me. Even though the Bush era is over, I feel some of the subjects I touched on are still relevant. War, corruption, corporate abuse, social injustices, these are all realities that we can all identify with no matter who is in office.

- E The Real Plains

WYDU: What's good man, how's life since we last talked?

EtheReal: In the words of Voroul Mega, "Life's ill, sometimes life might kill" but I'm still standing.

W: How about a quicker reminder of who you are for the readers?

E: My name is EtheReal Plains but many call me E The Real because it's simple and plain. I am what the kids call a "rapper" and I'm coming straight out of Boston.

W: So a lot has changed since we last spoke. You recently split with Social Light Sounds and started Kinda Dusty. Without going into the specifics of the split, why was the move made?

E: I reached a point where I didn't have the freedom to work on music with the people I wanted to work with. My work ethic is very intense and Kinda Dusty is an environment where I can do my thing without any restrictions.

W: As mentioned, you started Kinda Dusty, can you kind of explain what that is and who it consists of?

E: Kinda Dusty is an artist collective from Massachusetts. Emcees, Producers, DJ's, Graphic Artists, Engineers, etc. It consists of Paul Mighty, DJ Manipulator, Spit Supreme, Skivi B, and myself. We all work together as a support system to promote each other's music with the goal to reach a larger audience.

W: Let's talk about the new project, Headlock, it's with Remix Villain, how did you two hook up?

E: We met back in 06-07 in Boston. RV was looking to work with an Emcee on some material he had produced. He had a lot of interesting ideas he pitched to me and I was up for the challenge.

W: The EP consists of a different sound from what's found on your earlier projects. Why the change in the sound? Why the drum and bass influence?

E: We both come from two different music backgrounds which is what attracted me to this project. I'm from the Hip Hop world and Remix Villain is from the Drum and Bass/ Electronic world. Sometimes it's good to get away from what your used to and try something new. This isn't a permanent change in sound for me, it's more of an experiment. There is an Electronic element in the music, but it's still Hip Hop. I don't even listen to Electronic or Drum and Bass music but I respect it. Good music is good music regardless of where it comes from. Artists are afraid to take chances. They stick to their routine formula and never develop. My favorite artists are the one's who strive to sound different than their previous work.

W: What are you hoping to accomplish with Headlock? Why should cats check for this?

E: It's something different than your everyday Hip Hop. If you appreciate experimental music, than this is something you can enjoy. If your looking for the same old sounds and styles, I'm not your man. This year my plan is to release as much music as possible. I'm at the point in my career where it's do or die. I have a very deep catalog of music I've recorded over the past couple years and I want to show the world what I have to offer. I like the free download approach because it's the best way to be heard. The Headlock EP is just the beginning.

W: The track "Ultimate Rant" is becoming one of my favorites off the EP, basically because that's exactly what it is, a rant, with lots of ideas that I happen to agree with (drug companies and the such). How did that song come about?

E: Remix Villain sent me the beat and it was heavy. I basically wrote how the music made me feel, which is summed up in the chorus. "Who the hell are you, trying to tell me what to do" like fuck you, I'm going to do what I want. It's an intense track. When we recorded the song, he told me to go off at the end and see what happens. When I'm in the booth, I'm willing to try anything and I mean anything! It's moments like these that take the music to new levels.

W: The track "Vengeance", holds true to the album's path as it too is a bit different than a lot of the material you've released in the past. I thought the singing touch was nice and worked well with the theme of the song and the music. Is that something you were shooting for?

E: My friend Alanna is the singer on that track. She used to be the lead singer for a Rock group called "Medicated Kisses" in Boston. We had a mutual respect for each others talents and we wanted to figure out some way to collaborate. I thought she could fit in well with what I was recording with Remix Villain so we decided to make a song. This was another case of me wanting to try something out of the ordinary and it worked.

W: What's the background story for the "For All Mankind" Parts one and two? The production on Part Two is great!

E: "For All Mankind Pt. 1" was the first song me and RV recorded. We knew after that song that we had something going, which sparked the whole EP. Part 2 was just a continuation of the song. Those tracks are basically me showcasing my skills. I didn't get into any specifics with that joint, I just wanted to show the world what I'm all about.

W: You mentioned that you have a lot of music in the vaults, so what's next for E The Real after this EP? What else are you and the Kinda of Dusty camp dropping in 2010?

E: I'm coming out Gordon Gekko style this year (April 23). Kinda Dusty has too much material in the works to mention. We've been busy in the lab.

W: Anything we might have left out?

E: Shout out to the whole Kinda Dusty fam. Paul Mighty, Spit Supreme, Skivi B, and DJ Manipulator. We are all very dedicated to our crafts and our fans and supporters is what keeps us moving forward. Travis and Wake Your Daughter Up have been extremely supportive to me over the years and it is truly appreciated. Keep up the good work!

This album has been floating around on the internet since December. In typical WYDU fashion, we are bit late, but also in typical WYDU fashion, I wouldn't be posting this if I wasn't feeling it. Plexiglass Fountain is Tokyo Cigar (who has been featured numerous times on WYDU) and (new to me) Cyclops. Cyclops is quite nice on the mic, I might have to check out some of his previous works. You know what to expect from Tokyo, bangin' beats and of course he holds it down on the mic as well. The album is a little deeper than your average hip hop opus, so it takes some listens to "get it", but that to me, isn't a bad thing. So check out Kevin Nottingham's "Best Freed Download Album of 2009", Plexiglass Fountain's Left of the Scenery.

H.W. - A Year's Worth of Worry

What's good party people. For once I'm coming out you with no year end or decade B.S., thank goodness. It's a lazy Sunday afternoon around the WYDU offices, with no football I'm left wondering what to do with myself. I'm sure I can figure out something here soon. I thought one thing we could do is catch up some music that was submitted to us over the past month that we are sorely behind on, and for that we apologize to the artists and the readers. A lot of this stuff has already been seen on other blogs, but if you missed then, now is your chance to catch up.

First off is H.W.(aka Hazardous Waste), reppin' Boston MA. His album, A Year's Worth of Misery, dropped Christmas Eve. The album features production from Mac Lethal, Redlist, Phil And Numberman, and Tugboat. H.W. is along the same vein as Atmosphere, Eydea and Sage Francis. Okay, I guess you could call it emo, so if you are not into that type of thing, this probably isn't for you. Myself, I have a guilty pleasure for Atmosphere, so I don't mind the whole emo thing. H.W. does the vibe quite well, on some "women suck" type of thing. This is indicated on the top track of the album, "Shithead," which sounds like something Slug himself penned in his "Lucy Ford" days. "Happy Song," switches up things up a bit with a lighter approach. "You Know My Name" is another upbeat song, that actually works really well, with hand claps and a sing a long time of vibe to it.

All in all if you are into the whole introspective type of hip hop, this is most definitely worth your time. -Trav

Paving his own path in the Boston hip hop scene with countless shows under his belt, H.W. (also known as Hazardous Wastes) brings us his newest effort, A Year's Worth of Worry. This release is a cohesive collection of songs that share his vivid stories of life’s challenges. Once again, H.W. shows the hip hop community how he contributes to the Boston scene with a truly unique style of rap that is serious and insightful yet cynical and sarcastic. His lyrics often portray him as a sensitive person -- but the intense honesty he puts behind each track maintains his hard edge. The deeply moving content of H.W.’s material on AYWOW is so powerful and real that the listener will likely develop a personal connection with his music after just a couple songs. All heart and no lies, H.W. is a passionate emcee and an aspiring entrepreneur. He is the owner of the independent label, Delusional Records, which he founded in 2002. He also works closely with DJ Emoh Betta (Deck Demons), one of Boston’s most talented DJs. H.W. has big plans for 2010 – be on the lookout.

Falside - Five Finger Discount

Falside blesses us with his newest creation. You hopefully read his spotlight here on Monday. Well the mad beat maker from Providence, R.I. is back with his newly project, "Five Finger Discount". Haven't popped it in the digital tape player yet (iPod fools), but I have high hopes for this project. - Trav

Artist: Falside
Title: Five Finger Discount
Label: Digsafe
Released: 28th October 2009

"Five Finger discount" is here. Five Finger Discount" is Free. Download, Share, Post, Burn, Blast.

"Five Finger Discount" is a remix compilation originally produced by Providence, Rhode Island beatsmith, Falside. A follow up to his instrumental tape "Bugs In Ya' Teef", "Five Finger Discount" is another addition to Falside's growing digital download series. Available for free download, this installment represents the different syles of Falside's vastly diverse production. This compilation displays a form of Falside's production rarely heard previous to this release; the remix. 14 remixed tracks make it clearly evident that Falside's production can be applied to all styles of emcee's styles and tastes.

"Five Finger Discount" is an eccentric and defining release for Falside's remix abilities as a producer. In a sense, Falside has used the art of the "Five Finger Discount" to take acapellas from previously recorded songs and transforming them into his own unique presentation.

Here are some recent and notable comments regarding Falside's production -

"As much as I hate calling someone "the future," I can't help it in this case. Falside's production is just too damn good to not want him to take over or at least be a major part of the game." ~ Andrew Martin (OKAYPLAYER / PopMatters / PIMB)

"The name Falside is a name that has been popping up on the blogosphere at an increasing rate over the past few months. The producer from Providence, Rhode Island has been making a name for himself this year and in a way, I saw it coming." - (Wake Your Daughter Up)

"Five Finger Discount" is already being considered as his most anticipated and premier release in his download series of 2009. You may have already heard Falside's production from his work with such artists as Vast Aire (Cannibal Ox), Pacewon (The Outsidaz), Reef the Lost Cauze (Army of the Pharoahs), El Da Sensei (The Artifacts), C-Rayz Walz, Prolyphic (Strange Famous), Poorly Drawn People and more.

"Five Finger Discount" Tracklisting

Idle Warship - Party Robot

Mick Boogie teams up with Idle Warship to drop a free project. Idle Warship for those of you not up on the group is Talib Kweli, Res, and Graph Nobel. I'm not up on the other two, Res is more of a singer, and appeared on other Talib Kweli projects in the past and Graph Nobel is probably not something I would actively seek out either. The tracks I've heard of from the prior to this has been enjoyable. I'm not the biggest Talib fan usually, but I'm going to give this a listen. Two track through and the first track had a mature sound to it, which means my old ass liked it. The second track sounds like it was left off a John Hughes movie soundtrack from the 80's. Very synth pop sounding. Should be interesting.... -Trav

Idle Warship welcomes you to our first full length offering, Party Robot. This started out as a path to musical freedom. When we established Idle Warship, we did it for us. Now that we are giving you this music, Idle Warship no longer belongs to us, it belongs to the world. We don’t believe in labels for music. Labels make stop you from hearing something before you listen to it. We appreciate those who have taken this journey with us without judgment and enjoyed the ride. To everyone who purchased our music on iTunes and anyone who has bought a ticket to an Idle Warship show, this is for you. All my party robots stand up!

HiRoller Mixtape

Good Morning To All,
Today is an extremely important day for me not only do I release my 3rd mixtape "The Premonition" but I get a fresh start. For those of you who visited my website you know that I have been releasing music for some time now. I've always felt like I had the talent to get to where I need to be and it was only a matter of time before I got there. This mixtape was created with that in mind.

I wanted to introduce myself but in an awkward way. The concept of "The Premonition" is that I'm dreaming of getting a record contract. I had to really make it a dream so I purposely twisted the lyrics in a unique way because when you dream everything doesn't happen perfect its scattered. I also kept in mind that this was a mixtape so an abundance of punchlines was a must simply so that the listener could say entertained throughout. The beat choices were based upon the fact that i love Hip-Hop from the "Golden era". It also takes me back to the musicial space of my first mixtape in 06 which in the end symbolizes a new beginning for me today.

As far as putting it together I knew I had to do skits inorder for the tape to be cohesive and have glue. I also feel like the skit is a lost art in Hip-Hop today. So if I can help bring that back then that's what I'm gonna do with all of my projects. So I got some friends together and in the tradition of classic hip-hop albums of the past we created some skits that would help carry the albums concept.

In the end we have "The Premonition" which is in my own words an audio film but I'll let you guys be the judge. Thanks for all of the support and it's doesn't stop here this is the beginning. Thanks again!!!!

The Remix Tape 2009 - Soulbrother Simon

Coming in from across the pond is Soulbrother Simon, a producer from North London. This particular mixtape is comprised mostly of songs that I really wouldn't listen to much in the first place and some I have no clue what they are (I guess I'm getting old). None the less, Simon does a nice job of taking music that I would otherwise think of as total crap and made it half way listenable. No really, that's a compliment. And he does a decent job with some of the R&B that is featured on here as well. He doesn't over do it like some remix projects tend to do, where they try to make the beats take the center stage and totally drown out the lyrics. What he does is make the beats accompany the they lyrics and it works quite well on most of this mixtape.

Tab - Poet In The Dark

I still love my boom-bap, in your face and smack the spit out of your mouth hip hop. But in my older age, I need something I can relate to as well. Being an older white dude, that means paying bills, fucked up love life, baby mama drama, hopelessness and somberness are all topics that are game. And I can also deal with mixing of genres more than I used to. Want to throw some rock traits in your music? I'm cool with that. You want some well placed singing to get your point across? Cool with me, if it's done right.

All that can be found on Tab's "Poet In The Dark." While a lot of traditional cats will give this the dreaded "emo" label, cats that are into Sage Francis, Atmosphere, and the new Cage direction will be all over this release. Tab is an MC out of New Jersey who takes a lot of different musical ideas and puts them together to create his music. Songs like "I Love You," "White Flag," and "Paranoid," all incorporate other musical genres. For those that have open minds with their musical and lean toward the "alternative" side of hip hop will probably really dig this album. My only true knock against it is that I have to be in a gloom and doom mood to really listen to it, meaning it will kill a buzz rather quickly, but music like this is always important to have in ones collection, you never know when you might need your next soundtrack for those dark times. - Trav

Tab: Poet in the Dark

Listen/Download to the album here!
http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/42332

"Poet in the Dark" is the latest solo release from Tab of the NJ based hip-hop group The Dead Poets. Mostly self-produced (besides a few tracks) "Poet in the Dark" is a collection of songs created during the past few years. All these songs were recorded in various basement studios because the focus of this album is solely on the lyrical content. Dark east-coast production mixed with vivid tales of addiction, depression, love, hate and everything in between fill up these 17 tracks. Tab doesn't stay boxed in the "hip-hop" genre for too long though, a fusion of hip-hop/trip-hop/classic rock and reggae can be heard throughout the album. With songs already gaining college/internet radio spins Poet in the Dark is only beginning to reach its audience. If you are in the Tri-State area be sure to check out these tracks performed live with a full band, for a totally different twist. To sum it up in a few words ""Poet in the Dark" is a brutally honest journal entry by an artist who is not afraid to take chances."

Reviews:

"Intelligent enough to merit paying attention if not exactly mind blowing." -siriststylee.wordpress.com

"The next act I have is Tab, more than just a rapper/singer but a lyrical genius. Tab hails from New Jersey and has been involved in music for the majority of his life. He has picked up a lotover the years and listening to his songs you can tell that he is a quality act. In a tip when R&B, Hip Hop and Rap has been invaded by those who go on about how great they are and how much money they have, it's refreshing to have an artist of the genre who goes back to what hip hop was and was meant to be, mainly sending a message of the wrongs of the world, sending messages to the people. I know a lot of my readers don't like rap or hip hop but give Tab a listen and tell me he isn't good. Tab, if you're reading this, consider me one of your newest fans and someone who will be spreading the word.

"This is a pretty dope LP. If you know nothing about Tab or The Dead Poets, you should check this out."-Flawless Hustle

Fresh Friday, Drop One: The Spitzwell Brothers

In yet another attempt to help "the little guy" get their music heard, Friday's will be dedicated to shine the light some of the quality releases by cats that are struggling to get their name heard. Yes, I already do the spotlights and the inbox things, but this will be something that is kinda in between the spotlights and the those inbox posts. Obviously, it'll be music that I enjoy in some capacity, since I can't write about something I'm not feeling in some kind of way.

So each Friday, it could be one album, EP or mixtape, or it could be a whole handful that will be posted throughout the day (kinda like today) and I'll drop my two cents on each project. I'm always more than happy to check out new music, because quite simply, there is good talent out there not being heard. Yes, there is a lot of crap out there, but for every turd, there is an Archetype or Tha Connection waiting to be discovered.

Feel free to submit your material at the email on the contact button up above this. A few things as an artist to remember.

1. Drop some info on what you are submitting. Give me some background and some reason WHY I should check it out. Don't just say "Here's my album, thanks."

2. I get quite a few submissions every week and I know some of the bigger sites get even more than I do. Make this as easy as possible for us. Meaning, tag your mp3s, label them, put them in proper order, all that stuff. I want to be able to unzip the file and throw it on my iPod. Honestly, if I have to put the proper track list or label the shit, it's going to be put off until I have the time to do it, which who knows when that may be. In fact, actual CDs are preferred, but I know those are few and far between these days.

3. Please, by all means, follow back a week later or so if I haven't gotten back to you. I work 40 hours a week, put in 10-15 hours a week on the blog and try to have a resemblance of a life as well. I don't always get back in a quick manner, so feel free to politely jog my memory.

For the readers....If you love hip hop and you bitch about the quality of hip hop in it's current phase, do yourselves a favor and explore some of these groups. You never know what you may be missing and what you might like. Be proactive about discovering music. No one is going to force feed you the shit.

Spitzwell Brotherz - Premium Blend Mixtape

Alright, for the first post of the day, we got a duo(?)by the name of the Spitzwell Brothers. Comprised of EP3 and frankie.phresh, this duo is the new breed of MCs from the "middle east coast." They feature a touch of that southern flavor over smooth almost jazz-ish tracks.

frankie.phresh got at me just last night, and I'm going over the mixtape while I write this, but the music featured on the myspace page was good enough to capture my attention and so far the mixtape as yet to disappoint. The leadoff track "Jazz Trap," is a nice track to introduce the audience to their sound. With shades of Little Brother, Native Tongues and that flavor, it may not offer anything new in the way of sounds, but they do it well. The second track is reminiscent of another duo that was successful at mixing the southern flavor with traditional (read: east coast) hip hop sounds.

Coming in at over 26 tracks, you get your money's worth (although it is free). As I said I haven't gotten through all it at this time, and with that amount of material, there is bound to be a few missteps in there, but as I skim through this project, I see a lot of potential. You will probably be seeing these cats on here again in the near future.

Trav's Note: After giving it a listen, there is a lot of variety to be found on here. A little bit of something for everyone.

LoveJones & Phys Edison - Sunday Drive

I ran into this duo's album on HHB, and it's quickly became a favorite of mine lately. Laid back vibes while LoveJones kicks lyrics that accompanies the mood perfectly. Still getting my barrings on this, but the initial impression is nothing short of great. I'll be jamming this album more in the upcoming weeks and I'm sure you'll be seeing more of Love Jones and Phys Edison in the near future on WYDU.

The third official video from LoveJones and Phys Edison's debut album, Sunday Drive.

14. Roll Call(Top City)

For my third video, New World, I had an idea of using clips from black and white films to match the eerie feel of the song. When I first heard the track for New World, it immediately gave me the feeling of an old movie. The song is real dark and has that cinematic feel. After watching a bunch of movies, I came across a couple and found scenes that fit the feel of the song. Tori Boyd took all the scenes and edited them together to fit the song perfectly. New World is a new take on an old idea. Regardless of the time, the older people, the harder it is to keep up with the constant change. New World has a more modern approach lyrically over production that feels like it could be decades old. The video solidifies the whole feel of the song.

Pugs Atomz Free Mixtape - Road To The Top

New Mixtape from Pugs Atomz. Is it wrong that Pugs album is one of my most anticipated albums of the year? Dude started dropping great songs at the beginning of the year, some six plus months ago and they've all been dope. Here is an even bigger teaser while we wait for June 16th.

The mixtape is finally here, 2DopeBoyz.com & FakeShoreDrive.com Present: Pugs Atomz- Road 2 the Top, mixed by DJ Graffiti. Just like the upcoming album "Roof Top", this features 15 cuts with the likes of Finale, Astronote, The Gent$, Primeridian, Wes Restless, DJ Vadim, Sadat X and more. "It's a pleasure to host this mixtape for Pugs, especially since we're both representing the midwest and most importantly because I'm feeling every track on the mixtape. He got me thinking, 'If the mixtape exclusives are this thorough, the album must be ridiculous!'" - DJ Graffiti

Kid Hum - Offshore Drilling

The regular visitors will recognize the name: Kid Hum. Coming out of Denver, our paths actually never crossed since I had moved out of Denver, when we came across each other. It is unfortunate, but wouldn't have mattered after he moved out to the tropical paradise of Hawaii earlier this year. I'm been a big fan of his production after he slide me the Sunken State & Whygee EP late last year. I knew him as a radio DJ for Basmentalism crew and their weekly radio show and had no idea he was so nice behind the beats. Then he dropped the bomb with his Fossil Fuel release, which all I can say is "daaaayum".

That's kinda of where Kid Hum's new project picks up, Offshore Drilling, which uses instrumentals from Fossil Fuel and has some of the nicer underground dudes in the mix. The excellent site, Rock The Dub was instrumental in setting this project up and getting some WYDU fav's such as Pugs Atomz, Brown Bag All-Stars, and Cy Yung.

I'm only a few tracks into the project, but it's great to hear some the dope beats being rapped over. It might get some getting used to for me, since I'm so used to these being strictly instrumentals (I've listened to the project A LOT), but so far, I'm going to have to give Brown Bag All-Stars the high point so far, but so far nothing disappointing.

Zilla Rocca - Bring Me The Remix of Zilla Rocca

Sharebee:
Sendspace (old school):

In case you hadn't been keeping up with the Jones' at 33jones.com (pun!) the past few months, I've been posting remixes of choice songs from my mixtape Bring Me the Head of Zilla Rocca! reimagined by some of my favorite producers in Philly and beyond (Nex Millen, Small Pro, DJ Apt One and more).

Today marks the OFFICIAL release of the entire project as well as an acapella ("Pepsi With Ice") for producers to freak and an instrumental ("Get That Gun") for MC's to get their flow on to. The project also includes highly sought after remixes I did of Amy Winehouse, Portishead and Jamie Lidell available for the first time without zshare links and all that goobly gook.

Here's the rundown:

In the fall of 2008, Clean Guns emcee Zilla Rocca released the highly acclaimed mixtape album Bring Me the Head of Zilla Rocca, which made many critics Best Of 2008 list (LA Weekly, Rap Critics Poll, Wake Your Daughter Up). Described as, "A loose, funky hodgepodge of battle raps, musings on strip clubs, falling for older women, and reflections on the city of Philadelphia," the album served as Zilla's debut as a solo artist. Shortly after its release, Zilla reached out to several of his favorite producers and asked them to remix each song on the album. Over the course of three months, each remix made its debut on 33jones.com.

All of the remixes have been collected into a new album, Bring Me the REMIX of Zilla Rocca, with bonus material that has never been released before!

Here's more info on the remix contest held by 33jones in connection with the remixtape:

Free Del The Funkee Homosapian LP

A FREE Del album?! Yeah, it's free alright. Crazy talk you would think, but no, it's legit and everything. I'll admit, I was somewhat disappointed with Del's 11th Hour release from last year, but for free (and conscious free) I'll welcome the man who brought me "I Wish My Brother George Was Here", and "No Need For Alarm" with open arms. So no, I haven't heard this yet, but here it is in all its glits and glamor.....

1.Get it right now!
2.And they thought that was hell
3.Fit like a glove
4.Go against the grain
5.Hardcore punks can't take it
6.I'm smellin' myself
7.King of Fighters
8.News Alert
9.Simple Satisfaction
10.Sometimes i gotta get stupid
11.Straight from the big bad west coast
12.Land of funk
13.Young Adrenaline

Press Release.....

Less than a year after the release of his last album, Hieroglyphics member and co-founder Del the Funky Homosapien joins the ranks of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails with the free release of his new album, Funk Man: The Stimulus Package via Funnyman Entertainment. Del is currently on a nationwide promotional tour for the album and will be playing in over 30 cities.

As an early adapter of technology and having the status and perspective only a veteran can possess, Del takes advantage of his unique position to adopt a still experimental distribution strategy with Funk Man's release. Even with longevity, very few artists can hope to successfully launch a free full-length album. However with Del the Funky Homosapien's solid fan base and sponsorship deals with Arnette, Skull Candy, Osiris Shoes, and Bandcamp.com, Funk Man's release not only ensures support for the creative process, but also gives fans easy access to music they crave.

With a six year hiatus between Del's prior two solo releases, fans and critics may be surprised by the release of Funk Man: The Stimulus Package, which is out only a year following Eleventh Hour (Def Jux/Hieroglyphics). Del attributes this timing as a reflection of his life. Having shed the negativity that plagued him in past years, he feels a sense of renewal, which has resulted in newfound creativity. Additionally, after working consistently with record labels in his previous projects, Del is reenergized by his ability to produce music independently.

Being without a record label shouldn't be cause for alarm because Del, known for his intricate, honest, and humorous word-play, funky beats and artistic versatility, continues to deliver his signature style on Funk Man: The Stimulus Package. The high-energy album is comprised of raw lyrics, driving rhythms, and Del's undeniable funkiness. Throughout Funk Man, Del challenges the listener to be genuine, especially when he says, "it’s okay to be who you are. You can be free. So what if people are taking about you, they’re going to be talking about you anyway and they probably want to be you. They wish they could by funky, let their hair grow out, be like you." Del shows his commitment to this message and the funk in each track, from "Get It Right Now's" sense of urgency, to "And They Thought That Was Hell's" pop culture warning, and "Straight From the Big Bad West Coast's" historical breakdown.

Funk Man: The Stimulus Package marks Del the Funky Homosapien's 14th project as he has been in this hip-hop game for almost two decades. Starting at the tender age of 17 as protégé to his cousin, Ice Cube, Del quickly rose to the top of the underground hip hop scene with his albums, I Wish My Brother George Was Here (1991) and No Need for Alarm (1993), both released through Elektra Records. Soon after parting ways with the label, Del joined the Hieroglyphics family, comprised of notable emcees Pep Love, the Souls of Mischief, Casual, and Domino. In 1998 the critically acclaimed album 3rd Eye Vision was the first to be released under the Hieroglyphics Imperium label and since then Del has had consistent success with his solo and joint efforts, including Deltron 3030 (2000), Gorillaz (2001), Full Circle (2003), and Eleventh Hour (2008) to name a few.

As a witness to the destructive technology, i.e. video games, that replaced the comic book industry thirty years ago and seeing the same trends within the music industry today, Del has taken a proactive approach with Funk Man, in his reluctance to rely on standard distribution models. Funk Man: The Stimulus Package is Del's journey back to basics and the timely message coupled with the LP's free release display's his acute awareness of his fan's needs and the music industry at large.
