Yo WYDU Raps

A sneak peak.....

Paten Locke - Ventilation

My man Paten Locke is set to release his second single, "Ventilation," which happens to be my favorite joint from the album. He shot the video while out in L.A. toward the end of last year. Here is just a little behind the scenes love before the video, which is P. Locke's first video.

Dillon & Paten Locke - Stay Relative

Speaking of Paten Locke, he brought along a friend. Dillon Mauer and Paten Locke dropped a great album in The Studies In Hunger, it just happened to come during the whole year end crap and kinda got lost in the mess. But I've made up for it as I've played the shit out of it over the month of January. The beat is nothing short of special as Paten Locke crafts the perfect soundtrack for Dillon to drop that realness. No, I'm not talking about poppin' shots, I'm talking about family. Dillon brings out his family tree, literally. The video is well crafted and it's perfect to bring home the meaning of the song.

NoCanDo - Exploits & Glitches

Alright, so I've been sleeping on this Project Blowed graduate. I got the wake up call earlier this week when NoCanDo's Jimmy The Lock, he's latest album got passed to me and I've been playing fairly non stop since then. It's got noise, I love noise. Loud drums too. The video is creative as hell, which just adds to the song. This is how you do it...

Mike Schpitz aka LoveJones - The Rain

In some ways I almost prefer Mike Schpitz aka LoveJones over the Phys Ed beats, but I can't argue with the beat he borrowed from 9th Wonder neither. The video has some cool shots and holds the interest, but should have been shot during a rainy day, or a hurricane, Mike's choice....

Zerostar - Intro (Everybody)

We featured Zerostar in the past, this Ohio MC is part of the Weightless crew and is currently working on a full length that (I believe) is supposed to be produced by Blueprint. We'll find out for sure when we talk to him in the next week or so. He dropped his free EP Are We There Yet last summer, which you can pick up......now

Download the EP

The video is dope enough, produced by Shankar, it's the typical day-n-the-life, around the city, black and white video, but it's done professionally. Very sharp actually.

Kam Moye - Forever Fresh

North Carolina's own, Kam Moye aka Supastition, teams up with up and coming Bay Area director, Charles Barcelona (Homegrown Outfitters/Right Lane Ent) for the Marco Polo-produced banger, "Forever Fresh." The video is done documentary-style and showcases Kam in various behind-the-scenes clips, past videos, and show footage from performances in the U.S. and abroad. The rest of the video was shot on location in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The song itself is reminiscent of the former Supastition sound with Kam spitting rapid fire, while still dropping jewels like "I'm what happens when a child prodigy grows up." Marco Polo's head nodding production shines brilliantly throughout the track triumphant horn stabs and classic boom bap drums leave the perfect backdrop for Kam's ferocity. "Forever Fresh" is the b-side to Kam Moye's official second single and album title track, "Splitting Image." - Press

Ali Vegas feat Eyes Low - Strugglin' Artist

The video isn't anything special, it's got all your typcial hip hop subjects. I like the track a lot though, the production is on some smooth string shit.

Download track Here.

Children of the Night - Rumpus

RUMPUS, Children of the Night from Jon Wasserman on Vimeo.

I'm not sure where I stand on this video/track. The video is kinda boring in the sense I'm just watching a dude rap, with some other clips mixed in. The image they are portraying almost feels like that hipster stuff which I'm rather sick of. The beat sounds like something that came off of Kanye's 808 & Heartbreaks debacle. I had a love/hate relationship with the beats on that album, just like I do with this track. The emcees are nice though with theirs, which is where my confusion on whether to like this track or not lies. I don't think the video helps it all, but I'm still debating on the actual song.

Fat Rat Da Czar - Something Ain't Right

As far as videos go, this video from Fat Rat Da Czar might be the best one of the week. It might read a little too much like an after school special for some people, but I found the "mini movie" to be rather powerful. It follows along with the song, so it's basically a visual of what is going on in the song, and it follows it beautifully. The song itself is powerful in it's message, but not drawn out or dull, thanks to a beat that gives the song the needed character to be a moving song.

Jern Eye - Get Down

Jern Eye's new video for "Get Down" is anything but a "vision all helter skelter." Jam-packed with beautiful girls, special effects, and an energetic front man, the video for "Get Down," the official first single from Jern's sophomore album, Vision, is something provides the perfect visuals for the upbeat party-vibe. "Since the song is very high energy, we decided to make it visually dynamic in the post editing," says Jern. "A lot of cool affects were used on the set as well, like having projection transposed during some of the performance shots." As the infectious drumbeat takes hold, explosive special effects and colors pop at all the right moments, the result being a visually stunning viewing experience. Director Jon Santos took a very simple shoot, added the many facets of Jern Eye's personality, and created a unique and exciting experience perfect as the backdrop of a funky dance club. Although not apparent on first watch, Jern Eye's album cover for Vision is inserted into the video numerous times as well as a visual reminder of the song's name, "Get Down." The video also highlights the instruments that make the song so powerful with shots of the synthesizer playing its catchy lick and drummer pushing the beat. Jern Eye's sophomore album, Vision, is now available via MYX Music Label.

Richie Cunning - Richie Cunning's Day Off

RoutineFly and Richie Cunning are proud to present the official video for “Richie Cunning’s Day Off”, shot and directed by Trevor Traynor (www.trevortraynor.com / www.ishooteverything.com). The video is filmed in a grip of locations including but not limited to; someone else’s limo, a matinee showing of “More Than A Game”, and a cave. The song itself is available on Richie Cunning’s “Late Night Special” mixtape as well as Rec-League’s “Season Two” compilation, both released in December of 2009. Richie Cunning’s debut album “Night Train“ is available now on Routinefly.com as well as iTunes, Amazon and other fine internet music retailers.

All The Way In The Back of The Inbox

Whenever I check the inbox i have this habit of going all the way to the oldest e-mail in there and working my way forward, well i happened to stumble upon some gold while i was back there. Its a Dope ass video of a Jam Session between Kam Moye, Jern Eye, And Keelay. Shits off the chain, im going to be pulling the Audio off of this youtube for my ipod thats for sure.

O-Snaps

The Video:

Throw together Kam Moye, Jern Eye, Tunji, Evangelist a couple of MPC’s and a guitar and only good things can happen. This improv freestyle collaboration has tracks laid down by producers Cook Classics and Keelay of production duo Keelay & Zaire and Nate Mercereau on guitar. Impromptu sessions like this are just another example of how strong, versatile, and fun hip-hop can be when you gather a handful of talented emcees and musicians in a room together and let them do what they do best. The flow exhibited lets you know that these guys are grinding hard, but always having fun. With the handful of rappers present at the jam session overflowing with talent, it may be Kam Moye who shines the brightest as he raps, “I’m still pressing up albums / And keep women friends who could be twins with Jessica Alba.” As each emcee spits on a different topic, showing off enormous diversity in style, the one consistent theme throughout the video is clear: dope music. Jern Eye's Vision and Kam Moye's Splitting Image will be available October 13th and October 27th respectively via MYX Music Label.

The Background:

Los Angeles native Jern Eye began crafting his skills early on at freestyle battles in famous L.A. clubs. Jern formed the staple west coast group, Lunar Heights, with friend and fellow emcee Spear Of The Nation shortly after high school, and the group eventually migrated north to Oakland to join the Bay Area's flourishing independent hip-hop scene. Once in the Bay, the group was joined by Khai Sharrieff as they began making a name for themselves opening for a number of well known groups, including Crown City Rockers, The Pharcyde, The Procussions, and more. The group subsequently released their solo effort, Crescent Moon, to high acclaim. Jern followed three years later with his solo debut, Authentic Vintage, in 2006, and toured with Hieroglyphics and Living Legends as a result of the album's success. Jern Eye's sophomore album, Vision, features production from !llmind, Jake One, Keelay & Zaire, DJ Vinroc, Def Supreme, Phil Jahns, and Artek, and collaborations with artists Cali Agents, Mistah F.A.B., Zion I, Guilty Simpson, Nightclubber Lang, and more looks to make the case for Jern's upward movement as a legitimate hip-hop talent on a national level. Vision will be available October 13th via MYX Music Label.

Kam Moye recorded two critically acclaimed albums and three EPs under the name of Supastition for labels Soulspazm Records and Rawkus Records. As Supastition, Kam has appeared on songs alongside well-respected artists such as KRS One, Little Brother, Royce the 5'9, Stoupe (Jedi Mind Tricks), Rhymefest, Elzhi, Bahamadia, Cunninlynguists, Akrobatik, and many others. In 2008, he chose to officially begin releasing music under his given name of Kam Moye instead of his rap alias. Kam released a free EP, Self-Centered, in June 2008, which received over 4000 downloads in less than 24 hours. His outspoken music video, "Black Enough?", garnered serious attention shortly after its release. His first full-length under the name Kam Moye, Splitting Image, is due out October 27 via MYX Music Label.

Yo! WYDU Raps

I've long thought about how to do a video show in the same vein of Yo! back in the days. Is it possible or did youtube just kill the video show? I'm not sure if it's something that could ever happen again or not. The fact is though, I miss videos. I mean yeah, we can go to youtube and check them out whenever we want, but I miss the package of a hip hop video show. Yes, Ed and Dre were great as hosts and were a big reason we watched. And the fact that the game has changed so much since the days of "Yo!" and other rap video shows, the same reasons we watched back then, for the newest and hottest song, has been replaced by the internet. One more good thing the internet has killed, how is that for biting the hand that feeds me?

In any sense, I'd to do a somewhat regular series around here (anyone knows I don't do anything on a regular basis for the most part) of some videos that get sent my direction. Lord knows I get enough of them, and I'm always trying to figure out a way to get them posted up in a more original way than just making a post and saying "here is so and so's latest video". So here is the first crack at this...

The first video comes from a Gutter Water Music fam member, Oddity. Coming in over Dysposable Heroes production, Oddity tackles the subject of the Twin Towers, 9/11 and the potential the government had a role in it. I haven't had the pleasure of having much contact with Oddity yet, but from following his rants on the Gutter Water Music site, the dude is one of those cats that challenge you to think for yourself and not rely on the face value of anything. "Twenty Minutes With The President", does that as well. The video is aight, nothing mind blowing, but it does it's job with lots of footage of that eventful day that is sure to spark something in most everybody that dealt with that day.

The second video is from another WYDU Artist Spotlight alum, ScholarMan. I've been a supporter of anything ScholarMan does, because it's straight from the heart with soul, he doesn't mess around with unnecessary bullshit. The new song and video "Reap, Sow", is a great track, one of the better ones I've heard from ScholarMan, and dude creates nothing but quality music. The video looks like a big budget was put up for it as well, very professional, with a storyline and all hooked up to it. It added to the song, which is what a good video should do, take a great song and add to it or at the very least don't take away from it. Now I just have to find the mp3 for this track...

Next up Kam Moye aka Supastition. It's getting late and I'm getting tired, so we go to what the good people at Audible Treats sent us

The Video:

"Sometimes you have to be grateful for the things you already have." With Kam Moye's new video for "Let's Be Honest," the North Carolina emcee continues to display his down to earth sensibilities, and now finds himself fleshing out those sentiments with a strong set of visuals. The scenes are filled with Kam rhyming on a park bench and window-shopping with his girl, a refreshing contrast to the decadent hip-hop videos that have grown to be so common. The video is directed by Matt Koza of HOJ Media, who is known for his recent work with Foreign Exchange, Big Pooh, Cymarshall Law, and more. Kam and MYX Music Label have enlisted Koza for a 3-video package deal, which will also include videos for "Splitting Image" and one other video off of the new album. Kam states, "I've worked with a few video directors in the past and I've had great experiences, but very few had the same quality as Koza's videos. Instead of experimenting with different directors, I wanted to use one director to help tell my story for the album." Kam Moye's new album, Splitting Image, is currently available everywhere via MYX Music Label.

Last but not least, it's Bekay, with his newest video, "Bloodsport".

Brooklyn's own Bekay presents his follow-up video, 'Bloodsport," to his long awaited album, Hunger Pains, which dropped this week on Coalmine Records. The track is produced by Shuko and features DJ Dutchmaster on the cuts. Directed by MonStar films, 'Bloodsport' was shot & directed in the world famous Gleason's Gym which was once the training facility for boxing legends Muhammad Ali & Mike Tyson. The concept is a spin off LL Cool J's "Momma Said Knock You Out."

Kam Moye Album Sampler

Kam Moye was one of several note worthy releases that dropped yesterday. If you are not familiar with Kam Moye, you may know him better as NC MC Supastition. I've been a big Kam/Supa fan since first hearing him back in 2004 or so. He's dropped some classic cuts, so I'm looking forward to hearing this project. - Trav

The Sampler:

The date has finally arrived and to celebrate the October 27th release of Splitting Image, Kam Moye has leaked a self-selected album sampler, just in case there are still any undecided folks out there. The sampler is a 7-song sneak preview of Kam's first CD under his given name, rather than his alter ego Supastition. Splitting Image represents more than just a name change for Kam. The album isn’t a departure so much as an evolution towards a more mature, focused persona, and the sampler contains several songs that hint at this transition.

The sampler features production from Jake One, Vitamin D, M-phazes, Veterano, Khrysis, and S1 with guest appearances by Phonte, One Be Lo, Zumbi (Zion I), and many more.

Album Sampler Track List:

1. Splitting Image ft. Neenah
2. Imani
3. Re:born
4. Hello Karma ft. Phonte and Ayah
5. Let's Be Honest
6. Give Out, Give In
7. Life Line ft. One Be Lo

Inbox Digging

Last evening I was continuing my journey through the inbox and I came across a few notable tracks. One was Othello & DJ Vajra - Active Balance Remix, it’s been a while since a song made me impulsively nod my head, and when i played this jam at work my Filipino co-worker was also nodding her head impulsively. I’m currently trying to get some more info and tracks from him so ill keep you posted. This track is totally worth a buck!!

Emcee Othello (Lightheaded Crew) connects with turntablist DJ Vajra for this 12" which showcases Mayer Hawthorne aka Haircut and his group Now On (Jackson Perry, IX Lives, Haircut). This is the first single off the upcoming album 'The Required Taste.'

Track Info:
Artist: Othello & DJ Vajra
Song: Active Balanced feat. Mayer Hawthorne and Now On (Terry Cole Remix)

Another notable e-mail i found was Kam Moye AKA Supastition. Kam has been on several of the playlists that have been posted over time on WYDU. so here are a few new tracks by Kam Moye to take a listen to.

Kam Moye, a different breed of emcee, is gearing up to release his newest album, Splitting Image. Being the first album released after his name change from Supastition to his actual birth name, Kam shows that he has developed lyrically and isn't afraid to touch on mature subject matter. The album is due October 27th on MYX Music Label. The lead single off the album is "Lets Be Honest" with production being handled by Veterano. The song is about having a humble attitude towards life, something rarely spoken about in today's industry. Talking about the inspiration behind the song's concept, Kam says, "The song was inspired by a quote that I read once which said 'happiness isn't having what you want, it's wanting what you have.' That's my perspective in life on everything from family to my career. It's not settling, but sometimes you gotta just accept that maybe it wasn't meant for you to have what everyone else has... It's cool to dream but not to the point where you don't take notice of how good you have it already to just be alive."

Kam relays the song's message from the get-go, saying, "If you don't appreciate what you have right now, you'll never appreciate what's coming to you in the future." The song is conceptual in the way that each verse tackles different issues relating to materialism and superficial tendencies. Kam goes in on materialism for the first verse before touching on women and relationships in verse two and stardom in the third and final verse, rapping, "I don't need people in the streets to know me / Man, I kind of like keeping it discreet and low-key." With Veterano providing a soulful backdrop for Kam's true-to-life delivery, this track is poised to turn some heads as the lead single off his new album. Be sure to get a taste of Kam Moye's new sound, and look out for Splitting Image via MYX Music Label October 27, 2009.

So this post is like a buy one get 2 free sort of deal except you get the 2 free even if you don’t buy the first one!!

Supastition - Leave of Absence

Is it Kam Moye or is Supastition? I'm confused, but that is nothing unusual. None the less, Kam/Supa tends to be one of my favorite MC's doing it out there presently, so I'm looking forward to this release. I'm not much of a sampler person, but for those you that are......(Trav)
