Two of WYDU's favorite join forces to come with a new track. Straight off Cee & Bekah's Soul Movement Vol 3, The Understudies join forces with the Hip Soul duo from down under. I might have had just a little thing to do with these two groups meeting, a fact of which I'm proud of. - TravWe are just one week away from the official release of Cee & Bekah’s Soul Movement Volume 3, hosted by Mick Boogie and Terry Urban. This is the third (and best) of the Soul Movement series and the first being sponsored by my label, HiPNOTT Records.

For the next leak, we bring you “Too Dope,” featuring The Understudies from the San Fransisco Bay area. If the beat sounds familiar, it should, as they go in over the Black Milk banger “Motown 25″ (originally done by Elzhi and Royce Da 5′9).

Socheck out what everyone Down Under is raving about… and check out their updated profile page at hipnottrecords.com where you can also download the first two volumes of the Soul Movement series.

Mekka Don - They All Come Down

Always good to hear new music from former Spotlight artist Mekka Don. The thing about Mekka's music, it's honest music, you ain't going to hear no bullshit. That's what the new song, "They All Come Down," is all about. An honest take on "celebrities" and their falls from grace. Not your typical hip hop subject matter and that's why I'll be bumping it. -Trav

MEKKA DON’S NEW HIT DEBUTS AT THE SOURCE MAGAZINE EVENT

Mekka Don’s new hit single is more than just a hit. "They All Come Down" is a record written and recorded by Mekka Don which explores the rise of all stars and their inevitable fall. With the rise and fall of the Bernie Madoffs and Plaxico Burress’ of the world, and recent convictions of rappers Lil Wayne, TI, and Lil’ Boosie, the song could not have been more timely. Although some of these “falls” are tragic – ala Michael Jackson and Steve McNair – the truth still remains the same – “They All Come Down.” The song is complemented by a powerful video produced by Humungoid Films. Jared Zwerling plays the role of celebrity-living the good life.

The video debuted at “The Undaground Railroad” showcase at Taj presented by The Source Magazine and Tyku to rave reviews. A crowd member was quoted as saying “This is a very sad but true song. The video is perfect and every line he said was the truth. We need more music like this.” DJ Mick Boogie previewed the song and immediately felt compelled to post in on his website. Mick said, “the song is very soulful and bluesy. It has a message. It reminds me of some old UGK music but is slightly more mellow. It’s a winner.”

The song and video will be officially released today via http://www.theyallcomedown.com. The content rich website chronicles the rise and fall of many of America’s biggest stars in entertainment, sports, and business. The video is available for free and the song can be purchased via Itunes. Please visit http://www.mekkadon.com to learn more about Mekka Don, a rapper the New York Daily News says is “Bringing Change To Rap.”

I've just posted on my site a new CD for download, a remix tape called 'THE LITTLE BROTHER SHOW', a 9 track remix EP featuring my re-works of tracks by or featuring Phonte, Big Pooh and Little Brother. Here's the blurb about it I put up on the site;

Ever since putting out the Diary Volume 1.5 remix tape earlier this year, I've been wanting to do another remix tape with a more current feel. Whilst there's been something of a trend for producers remixing entire albums in the past few years, the truth is that there's a very small number of modern hip hop acts who've genuinely inspired me, let alone ones that have published acapella albums. Little Brother, on the other hand, impress me consistently and are one of the few contemporary hip hop acts who I always check for. So I gathered together the limited acapellas that I have obtained over the years and used them (along with a few instrumental skits) to produce this 9 track remix EP. Much like Diary Volume 1.5, I've tried to keep the style of beats appropriate to the age the original tracks, although it's all post-2003 material so in truth anything goes. The more recent tracks are a pretty accurate reflection of where my beat making sits right now.I think it's probably pretty clear from what I've said already, but for the avoidance of doubt, I should probably add that this is not an official Little Brother mixtape or release. It was born simply out of my search for some quality vocals to put together a coherent sounding EP and perhaps more importantly my being a fan of Little Brother. I sincerely hope it's received that way. Anyway, enough from me - I hope you enjoy the show!

Vocal and instrumental versions of the EP are available for free download from the Music of Substance downloads page;

http://www.musicofsubstance.com/html/mp3-downloads.htm

3 - Big Pooh - Strongest Man (Chris Read Remix)
4 - The Download (Interlude 1)
5 - Darien Brockington featuring Little Brother - I Need You (Chris Read Remix)
6 - Little Brother - Whatever You Say (Chris Read Remix)
7 - The Tour Life (Interlude 2)
8 - Little Brother - The Way You Do It (Chris Read Remix)

Haji P. "Good Grief"

First single from upcoming album Neighborhood Kid.

Haji P., of North Carolinian duo Brown Co., sets up for the release of his first solo project, Neighborhood Kid. A follow up to Brown Co.'s 2007 LP, Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. The lead single, "Good Grief" (produced by DJ MF Shalem) offers a brief autobiography of the rapper; spanning his childhood in Hawaii & Jersey City, his coming of age in the south, and his most recent move to California's bay area. Dope, right? The entire life of one mildly remarkable entertainer, summarized into four minutes of melodious rap song. How could you not love that? And if by some horrible mistake you decide you don't love it...give it a second listen and correct that mistake. Peace. -Haji P*

Greenhouse (Blueprint & Illogic)

As many of you know the first records I ever worked on were as a part of my crew Greenhouse Effect, from Columbus Ohio. Many things have happened and thru the years; the cast has changed and some people have come and gone. But since we started out with this Greenhouse shit as the foundation of this the weightless recordings movement, Illogic and I have decided to drop the "effect" from the name and continue carrying the torch as Greenhouse.

We have been working on material together off and on for the past year or so, and will be releasing an EP called "Electric Purgatory - Part One" on Tuesday November 24th on Weightless Recordings. The EP will be the first in a two part series that will be completely free to download. The CD version will come with all the instrumentals and a free poster, and available at http://www.weightless.net/.

So with that said, here's a song called "Gettin There". - Blueprint

So i spent about 20 minutes deciding if i was going to include these guys in my post, and i decided to go give em a shot. It seems that this group is young to the game, quite possibly their freshman release, but ill give them a spin because im very interested in seeing how they evolve over the next few albums. To me i see a decent amount of potential in these guys so lets see how they use it.

For the 4th and final video from my debut album, Sunday Drive, I linked with Tori Boyd to shoot A Tribe Called Quest remake, Sucka MCs. Featuring guest appearances from Phys Edison and Tori Boyd. I had to overcome several setbacks during shooting including a dirty, old garage filled with wasps and rat shit, almost going blind from wearing Walgreen's reading glasses and getting sick from mixing some of the worst combinations of food and beverages imaginable. The Itunes version of Sunday Drive will be available for purchase very soon.

Jern Eye

I wouldn't call Jern Eye a "new" artist per say, but he's new to me. I've been getting emails about Jern and his upcoming album "Vision". For whatever reason, I had been ignoring them. Finally while trying to catch up some emails I decided to play the video that was sent, since it was produced by Illmind, who is kind of hit and miss for me, but when he hits, he really hits. I must say I was pleasantly surprised.

The Video & MP3:

With his new album Vision dropping today, Jern Eye has been staying busy – releasing mixtapes, blogging for HipHopDX.com, and now, working on his latest video. With the first official video release from Vision, Jern also gives fans a special treat, as the Bay Area emcee uses two different songs off the album, a purposeful decision on Jern's part: "We purposely chose to splice the two songs of which both are produced by !llmind, to show the duality of one's life having both love and beauty along with both hardship and struggle. I think it's dynamic and very reflective of my real life."

The video starts off with the track ''Beautiful," where Jern touches on the positive side of things, wifey included. Lines like "Attitude got me on another altitude / Out of this world, how she workin' my latitude" show that lyricism doesn't have to be sacrificed when coming through with an uplifting, love-inspired song. Speaking on the inspiration for the "Beautiful" portion of the video Jern says, "The 'Beautiful' video was inspired by trying to capture something that would reflect a day in the life of two people in love. When I stepped to the director Lorenzo Escalante about the idea, he absolutely loved the idea of filming a story based video."

The second part of the video chimes in about halfway and dramatically changes the tone for the rest of the video, as it takes the listener to the darker side of things. Jern Eye chose to use the song "Something's Wrong" for this specific reason. !llmind provides hard hitting drums with a grimy guitar sample topped and a eerie vocal sample to complete the track. Jern Eye holds nothing back in his verbal attack with lines like, "By the look in your face, I can tell you're in the wrong place / By your eyes shifting I can see you a knucklehead who don't listen," and "I walk with a chip, I could give a sh*t about fame." The second half of the video was filmed by Charles Barcelona and was shot at the train yards in Oakland.

Tentatively titled "No Comment," witness UGHH.com versus Joe Budden! Foregoing formalities UGHH.com CEO Quest descends upon an unsuspecting Joe Budden as the rapper turned Internet personality is busily conversing with his fans via his blog backstage at Rock The Bells. UGHH's Van Stylez doesn't hesitate to add injury to insult as he berates Budden with a slew of questions concerning his recent beef with members of Wu-Tang along with allegations that the idea for Joe Budden TV was birthed by recently incarcerated Amalgam Digital label mate Max B's Biggaveli TV. Weeks after this interview Amalgam Digital released Joe Budden's new album "Escape Route" featuring the track "No Comment." Which came first the chicken or the egg?

Inbox Rocking

So I was back at the task of rocking the inbox, and I came across this group from Long Island, NY, a place I called home for many years. Naturally I opened up the mail clicked the link and I was delightfully impressed.

The name of this group is Ancient Tongue. I grabbed this Bio from their Facebook page:

Ancient tongue is a Hip Hop collective of 5 musicians from Long Island, New York who create music from the roots, hearts, and minds. Bringing Hip-Hop back to its elements; The MC, the DJ, the basslines and the drum breaks, Ancient Tongue continues to create original music forged in the past, present and future. Their organic instrumentation, socially/politically/spiritually conscious lyrics, and undeniable energy have placed them on stage with such acts as KRS-One, BlackSheep, EPMD, Ill Bill (Non Phixion), Q-Unique (The Arsonists), Grandmaster Caz, RA the Ruggedman, Killer Priest (Wu-Tang), C-Rayz Wallz, Kool Herc & more and have earned them sponsorships from Element Skateboards and Genuine Artikle Clothing. Their first full length release "Time Tells Tales" combines musical elements of Hip-Hop, Dub, Electronica and Rock with the traveling tales of lyricist, Deap One. With infinate layers of rhythms and grooves, samples and scratches, similes and metaphors, Ancient Tongue is climbing from sea level to mountain top, roots to ridges with unstoppable speed and determination.

Here is their Official Music Video for "The Hard Road"

Being an Audio Video guy myself, i was quite impressed with the direction of the video. I personally know the time it took to put this video together and it shows in its flawless blends and transitions.

The music itself has some solid simple beats in my opinion, so this is definitely worth a listen, and is going to go on my need to get list.

Inbox Digging

Last evening I was continuing my journey through the inbox and I came across a few notable tracks. One was Othello & DJ Vajra - Active Balance Remix, it’s been a while since a song made me impulsively nod my head, and when i played this jam at work my Filipino co-worker was also nodding her head impulsively. I’m currently trying to get some more info and tracks from him so ill keep you posted. This track is totally worth a buck!!

Emcee Othello (Lightheaded Crew) connects with turntablist DJ Vajra for this 12" which showcases Mayer Hawthorne aka Haircut and his group Now On (Jackson Perry, IX Lives, Haircut). This is the first single off the upcoming album 'The Required Taste.'

Track Info:
Artist: Othello & DJ Vajra
Song: Active Balanced feat. Mayer Hawthorne and Now On (Terry Cole Remix)
Album: Unreleased remix
Label: Colemine Records
Year: 2009

Another notable e-mail i found was Kam Moye AKA Supastition. Kam has been on several of the playlists that have been posted over time on WYDU. so here are a few new tracks by Kam Moye to take a listen to.

Kam_Moye-Lets_Be_Honest_Prod_By_Veterano.mp3
Kam_Moye-3_Ladies.mp3

Kam Moye, a different breed of emcee, is gearing up to release his newest album, Splitting Image. Being the first album released after his name change from Supastition to his actual birth name, Kam shows that he has developed lyrically and isn't afraid to touch on mature subject matter. The album is due October 27th on MYX Music Label. The lead single off the album is "Lets Be Honest" with production being handled by Veterano. The song is about having a humble attitude towards life, something rarely spoken about in today's industry. Talking about the inspiration behind the song's concept, Kam says, "The song was inspired by a quote that I read once which said 'happiness isn't having what you want, it's wanting what you have.' That's my perspective in life on everything from family to my career. It's not settling, but sometimes you gotta just accept that maybe it wasn't meant for you to have what everyone else has... It's cool to dream but not to the point where you don't take notice of how good you have it already to just be alive."

Kam relays the song's message from the get-go, saying, "If you don't appreciate what you have right now, you'll never appreciate what's coming to you in the future." The song is conceptual in the way that each verse tackles different issues relating to materialism and superficial tendencies. Kam goes in on materialism for the first verse before touching on women and relationships in verse two and stardom in the third and final verse, rapping, "I don't need people in the streets to know me / Man, I kind of like keeping it discreet and low-key." With Veterano providing a soulful backdrop for Kam's true-to-life delivery, this track is poised to turn some heads as the lead single off his new album. Be sure to get a taste of Kam Moye's new sound, and look out for Splitting Image via MYX Music Label October 27, 2009.

So this post is like a buy one get 2 free sort of deal except you get the 2 free even if you don’t buy the first one!!

New Kid Hum

This is the first single off this compilation I am working on , called "Wrighterz Block". The album was conceived by my friend Spoke In Wordz, who put together this "Right Now" track for the compilation. This album and its name were his concept, and I thought it sounded like a dope idea and here we are.

Usershare Streaming Link >>> "Right Now" http://usershare.net/eek918aeq22q

Basically I have a bunch of songs lying around that don't really have a home, and also some new exclusive material, which is all going to be released on "Wrighterz Block".

The album itself is going to be all Colorado Rappers rapping over some of my newest beats, which I am going to be making using Logic and a Midi Controller Keyboard, instead of my usual MPC 1000 and records. There will also most likely be a few sample based joints on there.
