As the year get's ramped up and 2007 gets going (and we have to wait for the dreadfully boring Jan-Mar months to pass), we here at WYDU are taking time to reflect back on the past year. The happy times, the good times, the times of overpriced hookers and cheap drugs.
I still don't completely understand why everyone was hyping this year up like it was something special. Yes, there was some decent stuff, but few albums made me listen to them past a couple of weeks. Even the songs that came out this year were just on the so-so page. Rating songs these days has become next to impossible. Back in the day, you knew exactly what song on an album was a single and there might be 2-4 singles on an album. All you had to do was watch any video outlet and you knew exactly what tracks were out. Hell, these days you get 2 singles coming out at the same time. You have the street single, the somewhat single, the radio single, the club single, the old persons single, the thug single. It's fucking rediculous. I don't even pay attention to the almighty single anymore, which is very unfortunate.
Singles in the days were beautiful things. I bought more maxi singles than I did albums in the late 80's/early 90's. There was always some kind of bonus remix(es) or unreleased B-side (see; "Hard Like A Criminal" as the B-Side from "Straight From The Sewer", or almost any single from the "Enta The Stage Album"). They made you want to go get them. I guess you can just chalk the death of the maxi single as another internet fatality.
We'll cover the last 50 that I (MEANING ME) personally liked. I'm not saying these are the best, these were just the ones that I played the most this year.

The First Anual WYDU Panty Awards for 2006: These were voted on by all the contributors, so not just my own personal views (Polarity had a hand in writing some of these as well)
Nicolay "Here" - After scooping props for his collaboration album with Phonte of Little Brother (as Foreign Exchange) in 2004, Dutch producer Nicolay came back in 2006 with an instantly forgettable solo album. Apart from a couple decent songs, the majority of this short album consisted of innocuous r&b fluff. I don't have anything against r&b if it's done well, but most of this shnit had less flavor than Starbucks coffee.

Hot M.I.L.F in a Thong Award (Least Embarassing Comeback Album): Juggaknots "Use Your Confusion" - Some questionable production choices stopped this record from being as good as it should have been, but Breezly Brewin is still one of the most interesting lyricists around and his sister Queen Herawin is kinda dope too. Hopefully we don't have to wait another ten years for another instalment. Honorable Mention: Black Sheep -"8mw Novakane" & Camp Lo - "Fort Apache"
The Fat Chick In A Thong Award (Most Embarassing Comeback

The Cute Chick In One Piece Award (Slept On Album ): Obie Trice - "2nd Rounds On Me". I

Polarity's Recent Favorites
2006 was such a disappointing year in terms of quality full length records that I decided to write a little something on some other recent albums that are well hunting down if you don't own them already.
Polarity’s Choice:
Maspyke - Static (ABB 2005). The Springfield Mass. Trio of Tableek, H Bomb Boogie and producer Roddie Rod are one of the flyest groups to come out in the past few years. Moving from a failed tenure at Atlantic records to grinding it out on the underground scene, years of putting out tight singles and EP’s culminated in the excellent ‘Static’ album late last year. Roddy Rod is one of the best producers out right now, squeezing high level head-nod from the most unlikely of sources (like samples from cooking shows on ‘Recipe’ for example.) Lyrically, Tableek and especially H Bomb are the first rappers in a long while to have me reaching for the rewind button. Basically the whole package is high on replay value, a value missing from many recent releases and therefore something to be valued highly.
OC - Starchild (Grit, 2005). The reception that met Omar Credle’s 2001 third album Bon Appetit was nothing short of poisonous. The legions of fans O had accumulated on the strength of his two classic (if commercially overlooked) albums Word…Life and Jewelz simply couldn’t comprehend why the true school stalwart would adopt a pseudo-jiggy steez and join the crowd of new millennium ‘players’. I personally liked the album (can’t front on ‘Dr Know’!) but Starchild, was a comeback in all senses of the word. Produced mostly by Euro-beatsmiths such as Soul Supreme (who employs the sped-up soul sample shtick better than most), sample clearance complications meant Starchild was only ever officially released in a handful of countries like Japan and Australia. Don’t let the awful cover art put you off, this is well worth searching for. Smoke & Mirrors, also released last year was thematically similar in some ways to Bon Appetit, but definitely had its moments. Produced by Mike Loe (last heard from on Ill Biskits’ unreleased album), Smoke was overlong by about 6 tracks but was still one of the better releases of ’05.
Chris Lowe - The Black Life (Female Fun, 2004) & Dooley O - I Gotcha (Lewis, 2005). For those of you unfamiliar with the story, New Haven CT residents Dooley O and Chris Lowe were responsible for uncovering the classic ‘It’s a New Day’ drum break (or the Skull Snaps break as some people call it) back in 1990, only to have Dooley’s denim-shredding cousin Stezo snatch it up and use it on his ‘It’s My Turn’ joint. Dooley’s own album ‘Watch My Moves’ was shelved and for 15 years Chris and Dooley languished in obscure hip hop lore while the Skull Snaps break they found in a neighbours basement would be endlessly used on hundreds of classic rap tunes ('Sally Got a One Track Mind', 'Who Got The Props' and 'Take It Personal' to name a few).Anyway, after Solid Records finally released Dooley’s fine ‘Watch My Moves’ album in 2003 and the whole story came out, Chris and Dooley seemed to find a new lease on life, each dropping excellent solo albums in 2004 and 2005 respectively. ‘The Black Life’ and ‘I Gotcha’ are similar in that neither pander to obnoxious mainstream tastes, sticking with thick funk samples and clever wordplay. The antithesis of ‘hot shit’, both albums effortlessly capture the flavor of the early 90’s while still managing to remain current.

I'll have to disagree with you on 'The Holocaust' being The Worst Album, although I've listened to the album with friends and heard comments about the oddity that is this cat's voice; It is rather odd the voice he's adopted recently. I don't remember thinking that when I first heard him on the 1st Bobby Digital LP.
I haven't listened to the Saafir LP in it's entirety yet to make a "worst" determination, but really, you couldn't find a worse album?
In other news, good lookin' for puttin' me up on Chris Lowe and Dooley O. Happy New Year.
Well now that you've posted the rest of your songs of 2006 I can see the big difference between my taste and yours.
and fosterakahunter, that's brave playing that holocaust record infront of people you know, I'm not sure if I could do the same.
i'm glad you guys are giving revenge the props it deserves
Congratulations boys on one of the most informative and entertaining end of year lists that I've seen in blogland. The Panties awards are hilarious! Because I'm still catching up on older stuff I have missed a lot of this year's releases so I'm not really in a position to comment on the selections, but it has definitely given me food for thought and a host of things to check out. Let's hope that 2007 brings us some truly great stuff so that we can start looking forwards instead of backwards (although let's not get carried away).
Much respect on your work over the years, as I said before, WYDU really was an inspiration for me starting my own blog - hope that you are still checking it and feel that it is worthwhile. Take it easy fellas.
I LIKE the Holocaust album! I can't even fully explain it. I definitely dig the production, if nothing else, although from what I remember when I last listened to it a few months ago, I wasn't totally HATING the dude's voice. Sounds like he has candy in his mouth while rhyming; that HAS to be on purpose, right?
I honestly think he just went crazy, and that it is not, in fact, candy in his mouth.
It could be crack, or something deeper in his personal life. His new aka is 'RobotTank'...
I liked him before his personality cannibalized itself.
Well ok, I found 'The Ocean' on that disc listenable, but only because of the beat. Did you check Blue Sky Black Death's previous album this year? If you listen to the track 'Scriptures' and see what Lil Sci did with one of their beats, it's awesome. I wish he'd had the opportunity to make a disc with BSBD instead of Holocaust.
matter of fact, here's the song (in my top 20 of 2006 btw):

Nice work putting that together T, you know I still haven't heard that Black Sheep album! I think they really shot themselves in the foot only releasing it as a download, because it means broke dudes (like me!) with dial-up don't have access to it. Haven't seen that new Camp Lo anywhere either...
polarity, i had blacksheep & camp lo up in ?oct. i think.
i think my bs links are still good:
novakane http://www.sendspace.com/file/ag35kf
same sheep different day http://www.sendspace.com/file/1jz84v
here's my entire folder:

lemme know if you want camp lo fort apache,
but novakane is well worth the dl imo.
i happened to see them live around the same time,
so maybe that's why i dig it so much.
yeah, trav, that panties awards is maaad funny..
and a dope ass idea!!
" I still don't completely understand why everyone was hyping this year up like it was something special."
haha no wonder look at your top 50 best tracks list. looks like you have very little idea about hip hop & what got released this year.
Thanks Al, my problem is not having a speedy internet connection and if I leave it on overnight it inevitably crashes. I guess one day when I make it rich I'll finally get to hear some of this stuff.
By the way, a friend of mine got given that Holocaust album, hated it and gave it to me. I also hate it. So if you wanna take it off my hands just lemme know and I'll mail it out to you for free, it's just taking up space here...
And anonymous, I couldn't agree with you more. These guys have terrible taste. I just come here for the pictures of fat girls in skimpy panties.
I got 7 new albums yeasterday and they are all nice, so my list will definitely change. I will make my big hip hop 2006 wrap up in about a month...
polarity: DAMN your dial-up is slower than regular dial-up. lol.
lemme know if you want the songs separately.
thanks for the holocaust, but someone's hookin' it up later.
actually trying to find their earlier 06 release with the 2 discs: instrumentals + vocals from guru, jus allah, wise intelligent, pep love, a+, awol1, sabac, mikah, mike ladd, etc..
i found the inst cd, but it looks incomplete.. dyin' for the vocal cd, so if anyone's reading this hint hint..
aiight i got a chance to breeze thru HOLOCAUST and it's not THE WORST, but i prolly won't listen to it much.
i also got the HEAP OF BROKEN IMAGES cd 2 w/the emcees and that's pretty nice.
my dude also hooked me up with some warcloud ish (new & old) and he sounds better (that's not saying much- his hooks are wack!) on those beats than BLUE SKY BLACK DEATH's..
hey to travis and all you fellas. so much respect for the way you do your blog and i wish i can get mine up to scratch just as good.
i have one recomendation for you though as it didnt make it to anyones "top lists"
check out TY feat maceo. track is called Closer. by far one of the best hip hop tracks to come out of the U.K in some time and in my opinion possibly ever!!!
http://www.zshare.net/audio/06-ty-closer_ft-_maceo-mp3.html
so so sick! respect to all you dudes
Thanks for the props.
As far as that Blue Sky Black Death album goes, I found it god awful, but in the end it's only an opinion. There might be worse ones out there, but those are the ones I listen to once then never play again. This album was getting some critical acclaim so I listened to it 3-4 times just make sure I wasn't missing something. In the end it just basically sucked.
And to Mr.Anon (I love when cats can criticize but not use an actual name) feel free to drop something that is worthwhile to listen to. I'll admit, my interest in Hip Hop doesn't lie in the modern aspect of it anymore, I spent 75% of my time listening to older stuff. In the end, it's all an opinion, respect that and move on. Or if you are alluding to tracks that got released last Oct, I could give a fuck less, If I listened to it this year for the first time then it got put on this list.
I still stand by the fact that shit is bland and young cats are just used to this fact
Pronay, please feel free to post up some of your favorites. As I said, I'm no where near an expert on modern hip hop. There were other songs that people have told me to listen to that I didn't get to until the past couple weeks, hence they didn't make the list.
I try to keep an open mind about everything. I mean, seriously you don't see many lists that had both Young Joc (I loved that song and I know that's not cool with the "Net Heads") and Atmosphere (who I personally really like), which would be considered "Nerd Hop" of sorts I guess. If I like it, I like it, so I won't aplogize for anything.
Travis,You take the award in longest post ever, most thought into a post ever and at least another couple. I had to read all this in three seperate instalments.
Nice work as always.
LOL @ Nas' Hip Hop is Dead. That certainly was an ironic title, because the second half of that album demonstrated exactly WHY hip hop died. Weak beats, crossover R&B hooks, uninspired production, and did I mention the R&B hooks?
Bring back sampling and loops, because hip hop just hasn't adjusted to original production yet.
Hey guys props on this site..very informative and entertaining. I am having some trouble DL'ing from the links you have posted. I am very interested in the Compton Blockz cd from 2nd II none and a bunch of others. Is there any way i can get these somehow, either through email or repost the Compton Blockz? Greatly appreciated...keep up the good work fellas
Anon, I missed it myself, the best thing is to get ahold of Brian, who wrote the post and see if he can...I'll ask as well
