We dive into the my vinyl archives once again and this time pull out a rather nice one from Black Sheep and their "Stroblite Honey" single. If you read this blog, you probably already have a good idea who Black Sheep was, so I won't waste time going over that. From what I recall, "Stroblite Honey" was the third single from their Wolf In Sheep's Clothing classic debut album. While the album version was decent, I always thought it was lacking something. Apparently so did Dres and Lawnge, cause the bring the listener three new remixes and as an added bonus, there is even a remix for "Gimme The Finga".The first remix appears in the form of the "No We Didn't Mix", a version which I think I've put on a past WYDU Classics. Armed with infectious horns, this version is much livelier than the somewhat dull album version. The horns are the highlight of the remix, but the beefed up drum track also gives the track a fuller feel to it. It's tracks like this that really gave Black Sheep their likability and their sense of humor, and they did remixes right.
The second version remix, "Maybe We Did Mix", is the video version, which spiced up the original while still keeping the essence intact, which is probably the best way to go about it. The track is really about the concept, which doesn't need an over powering beat behind it. And it doesn't, but the added elements to the original beat really do wonders for the track.
Starting on Side B is a pretty horrid version of "Stroblite Honey", the "Yes We Did Mix", which sounds like some cheap house ripoff. Oh well, two out of three isn't bad.
As a parting gift, the Sheep grant as slightly different version of "Gimme The Finga", which happened to be one of my favorite tracks on the album. Not significantly different from the original, with only a weird string sample the only major addition, but it does change the feel of the track. I can't say it's better or worse, just different. Worth the listen....
